RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Chapter 3 -Methodology
3.1 Introduction
This chapter presents an overview of the techniques and processes adopted to address the
research questions in the most logical and systematic manner. To meet the research objectives of
the study on ‘Acceptance of E-Wallet in Malaysia’, following methods have been adopted by the
researcher. As stated by Kumar (2019), research methodology contains the steps and procedures
that are applied to identify and collect the relevant information, analyze and interpret those and
present the findings that address the research problem. The fundamental steps of research
methodology contains research approach, research model, research design, development of
research instrument or data collection instrument, population and sampling, and data analysis
techniques (Quinlan et al. 2019). There are various methods under each of the aspects and based
on the nature of the research topic, the most suitable method is chosen. In the given study, the
acceptance of E-wallet in Malaysia is being studied and hence, as per the nature of the study, it
leads to a primary research. As stated by Burgess et al. (2017), primary research is based on
primary data, which is collected from the firsthand sources directly, through methods like
interview, survey, observations, focus group, feedback forms etc. In this case, primary data is
collected through a survey. The methodology for this study contains research approach, research
process, research model, research design, questionnaire designing, sampling, data collection
method, evaluation method, reliability analysis and research ethics. These are addressed below.
3.2 Research Approach – Descriptive approach
Research approach refers to the general plans and techniques consisting of the sets of
belief or assumptions directing towards the procedures of information gathering, analyzing and
providing interpretations to answer the research questions (Alase 2017). Following are the

comparison tables between descriptive and exploratory approach and qualitative research and
quantitative research.
Characteristics Descriptive approach Exploratory approach
Purpose Used for describing the data and the
features of the study. However, it is
not used for explaining any cause of
the variations in the research
variables (Rahi 2017).
Used for providing in-depth
insights into and giving an
understanding of the research
problem (Woo, O'Boyle and
Spector 2017).
Description Research study that only describes
the characteristics of the information
and their functions (Atmowardoyo
2018).
Conducting exploration into the
research issue for further and more
in-depth investigation (Reiter
2017)
Research process Structured Unstructured
Sampling
technique
Probability sampling Non-probability sampling
Design flexibility Rigid Flexible
Statistical design Pre-planned structure, useful for
analysis (Rahi 2017)
No pre-planned structure for
analysis (Woo, O'Boyle and
Spector 2017)

3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Purpose To investigate and measure the
information quantitatively and to
provide a generalized inference for
the entire population from the
sample (Bryman 2017).
To discover the in-depth
characteristics of the text-based
data through naturalistic approach
and to get understanding of the
underlying motivations, opinions
and reasons (Bryman 2017).
Description Quantification of the research
problem by using numeric and
measurable data and application of
statistical problems to get the
research outcome
Exploration and interpretation of
qualitative information for
uncovering the trends in the
opinions and thoughts for further
investigation
Objective Prediction of causal relationships Explanation and description of
relationships between research
variables
Research method Testing of hypothesis by applying
deductive research approach (Basias
and Pollalis 2018).
Interpretation of findings by
applying inductive research
approach and formulating
hypothesis or theory (Basias and
Pollalis 2018)
Sample Large sample size and application of
probability sampling technique
Small size of sample and
application of non-probability
sampling technique
