2REFLECTION ON TEAM PROJECT
Introduction
A team activity was carried out with a group of students in the rural communities
regarding influenza in elderly people, which I was a part of. As future nurses, this was one of
the practice activities to increase our awareness regarding our jobs and making us more able.
I was placed in a team of four.
Experiences while working within the team and my contribution to the team.
Driscol’s model of reflection has been used in the following to reflect upon the
experience while working within the team and my contribution to the team.
What
In the very beginning all the members were thoroughly educated and informed about
influenza, its causes, the health and environmental conditions that facilitate it, the symptoms,
and the ways to prevent influenza along with treating it. The importance of such knowledge
was made clear to us as the nature of our task demands. The task of the team was to, explore
the influenza cases in the rural communities to understand more about how social,
environmental and hygiene factors contribute towards influenza (Vemula et al. 2016). We
showed them and explained to them with the help of charts and videos we had prepared the
measures they can take to prevent influenza. In the end, we provided the vaccination and
medicines that were required to prevent and cure the flu in the people of that community.
So What
Adhering to the research of All et al. (2017), myself along with other three members
of our team divided our work equally into four parts so that no one had any problem with
their roles. This was applied in every aspect of our task, the four of us investigated into four
subtopics of influenza, we made the charts and videos for awareness and prevention together
(Souty et al. 2015). Even during the distribution of medicines and giving vaccines, we took
turns in a divided group of two.
What now
Working in this team I developed good relations with my fellow teammates. We were
able to establish a rapport within ourselves which helped us to work better as a team and seek
each other’s help whenever there was a need (Cox and Mungall, 2017). We chose our own
team leader, who turned out to be quite efficient. However, at times I had to stand up to the
task regulating the tasks in the group. I refrained myself from the creation of the charts for
most of the parts and my team was adjustable enough to balance that by making me the main
spokesperson for the awareness task considering my communicative skills.

3REFLECTION ON TEAM PROJECT
Team's contribution to my learning of health promotion principles and practice
The sole task of the team was to spread awareness of the factors that cause influenza
and the ways that can prevent it, to the people in the chosen community. This was done on
the basis of prior research and knowledge. This task was chosen to improve our performance
as to future nurses and give us a real experience in the field of nursing in unfamiliar territory.
As I have already mentioned, all the members in our team established a rapport within
ourselves which helped us in our cooperation and improved functioning. I was helped by my
team members in various instances and had the chance to do the same for them. I had some
doubts about the methods we would use to spread the awareness about flu which would be
understandable by the elderly rural population of rural communities. My fellow teammates
helped clear my confusion by proving some really creative and easy ideas. Even during the
implementation of prevention and treatment in the camp, I was often helped by my fellow
teammates whenever there was a communication gap between me and an individual from the
rural community.
This teamwork has helped in facilitating my skills in team performance and made me
understand the importance of cooperation within a team (Hay et al. 2017). Cause prior to my
past experience, I am aware of how poor team coherence can not only slow down a team's
work but also affect its quality. The team, however, did have some small problems, the leader
of the team was efficient for most of the parts, but at times there was a need for me to step up
and take charge of the task. I believe, that a team leader should be fully capable of managing
his or her team and its members. I am also worried that too much dependence on one's team
members can lead to the individual staying incapable of performing certain tasks alone. The
cooperation definitely helped our team making it efficient, but I think there is the scope of
improvement in being less dependent on the fellow members and improving our individual
skills.
Professional and personal development as an emerging nurse, graduate in my
healthcare field
I have been able to gain insight into the process of dealing with providing prevention
and treatment and accepted modes of behaviour for a nurse through this practice. I have also
been able to improve my knowledge and behaviour regarding teamwork.
While working with this team on my current project, I understood how different practices that
seem indifferent contribute so much in disease prevention.

4REFLECTION ON TEAM PROJECT
I truly realised the importance of the role played by awareness towards a healthy
living (Nimegeer et al. 2016). This was possible due to the thorough research I conducted
regarding the facilitators and preventing measures of the flu and my first-hand experience in
the field.
I had no prior practice in working in a rural community, as a part of my role, I had to
interact with the elderly people and help them avail treatment, and this task helped me in
gaining insight on how the residents of such communities and elderly patients should be dealt
with.
I learned the role of a team in carrying out any complex task and how cooperation in
such group forms the first necessary step for one's tasks.
I became more aware of my skills to facilitate cooperation within a group and
temporarily manage it. I am willing to work for the development of these skills to improve
my overall leadership skills which would help me excel in my career in future.
Conclusion
After reflecting upon the group activity helped me applying my knowledge of
appreciable behaviour that I gained through this team project as a nurse. In future, it would
help the patients to be more comfortable with me and open to discuss their problems and
follow their treatment.
