2REFLECTION
Introduction
Reflection refers to the ability of a person to examine and interpret past experiences and
actions in order to gain a new understanding. Therefore reflection helps in improving the
learning of an individual by analysing the past experiences and events. It also helps in
improving the problem solving and critical thinking abilities and skills of an individual. It helps
individuals in challenging their basic assumptions and also helps in exploring new approaches
and ideas for doing things differently (Cottrell 2017). The main aim of the paper is to reflect on
the case study undertaken by us related to the case of Brett Jones and his decision making and
also about the group work. The paper will discuss about a reflection on the individual work and
the group work.
Reflection on individual work and theory justification
For the purpose of the individual assignment each member was assignment a different
task and my task was to carry out analysis of the decision made by Brett Jones based on some
ethical theories. The theory that I had identified for the purpose of this task was the Utilitarian
ethical theory (Beugelsdijk and Welzel 2018). The utilitarian ethical theory discusses about
taking those decision which will result in greater good for all the parties engaged. Therefore, the
decision taken by Brett Jones to hire a specialist who was having knowledge about the African
culture and also the decision to pay a bribe of $7500 and $ 10,000 as a compensation to the
natives of Tanzania is not unethical. The decision undertaken by Brett Jones was not unethical
because he took a decision that resulted in greater good for all the parties involved- the company
and the natives. The company would benefit from the decision of Brett Jones because they will
be able to carry out the project smoothly in Tanzania without any resistance from the locals and

the locals on the other hand got compensated for the sacrifice they made (of their land).
However, while doing the assignment I have also gained knowledge about the diverse culture or
cross-cultural management (Beugelsdijk, Kostova and Roth 2017). This is so because, although
the decision of Brett Jones was justified as per the ethical theory of utilitarian but the same was
considered as unethical by the company. The main reason behind the same was difference in
country cultures. America has a culture of carrying on activities ethically irrespective of the
scenario faced by them and the company Hydro generation was known for its ethical activities
and values. Therefore the company’s culture influences the actions and behavior of its employees
and Brett Jones action was against the same (Baron 2017). On the other hand, the culture of
Tanzania is such that it does not consider bribery as an unethical activity because it is quite
common in Tanzania to carry out unethical practices and bribery. Therefore, Brett Jones decision
was wrong according to the values and beliefs of his company and on the other hand, the locals
respected Brett Jones for his decision because they thought that he was the only one who
understood their values and beliefs (Pearson.com. 2020). The company and its employees
criticized Brett Jones decision because they thought that his decision would affect the reputation
of the company and would damage their public image if the people came to know about the
same. Therefore this case represented a situation of ethical dilemma for the company as well as
Brett Jones. However while carrying out this assignment I have learned a lot about the concepts
of organizational culture and the way it influences peoples decision making and behavior, I have
come to understand the concept of diverse cultures with the help of Hofstede’s cultural
dimension and I have also understood about the ethical theories such as utilitarianism. Before
undertaking this assignment I did not have much knowledge about diverse cultures and ethical
theories and initially even I had thought that Brett Jones decision was unethical. However, after

undertaking this assignment I am feeling more confident because I have gained a lot of
knowledge from this assignment.
Reflection on the group work
For the purpose of this assignment, individuals were divided into group and our group
comprised of six people. Each one of the group member was described their part and we decided
to work on the topic of Nepotism and Bribery from the case study. Since there were six people in
the group therefore the work was divided into six parts and each problem was to be dealt by three
people (Graham and Walton 2018). Therefore one was responsible for doing thedefinition of the
problem part, the second was responsible for analysis part and the third was responsible for the
recommendations part. We decoded that we would make use of national culture theory, ethical
theory and also communication theory (Cohen and Ahn 2016). And then each person was
required to write an individual report. Initially the work was going at a good pace as we had
cleared out everything. We decided that we would meet after classes for the purpose of this
assignment. However, during the last week all our plans got changed due to the situation of
Corona virus and that had made it difficult for us to complete our podcast. However, we decided
to be in continuous contact with each other through various social media platforms. However the
same was not very easy because some of the members had become very casual about the
assignment and therefore we were lagging behind as a group. Moreover, we also felt that for
those members who were adamant not to do anything and not to participate in this assignment,
we even agreed on doing their part because this assignment was going to affect our results.
However, the podcast got cancelled due to the current situation of corona virus and therefore we
were only required to prepare our scripts (Sampath, Gardberg and Rahman 2018). There were a

few members who took up the role of being a coordinator in order to ensure that everything went
well even in this situation of emergency and they took up all responsibilities.
Conclusion
Therefore from the above discussion, it can be concluded that reflection helps in
improving individuals as it includes identification of the strengths and weaknesses. Once the
weaknesses have been identified, individual can work for improving the same. Similarly, from
the paper, I have understood a number of areas that can be improved by me so that I can be
prepared for facing similar situations in the future. Moreover after undertaking this assignment I
have understood the importance of communication and the role played by it in determining the
success of the team.
