Introduction
As a student of business management, I have always dreamt of becoming a Business
Analyst in a reputed corporate house of Australia which would help me get a specific edge in my
career. Therefore, I have chosen the company Woolworths as the company where I would be
eager to work and start to build my career for future. I have chosen a conglomerate such as
Woolworths so that I come across a big and more complex business atmosphere which would
help me grow professionally and personally with my experiences.
Woolworths: an overview
Woolworths supermarkets, also known as “Woolies” in the colloquial language, is a
chain of supermarkets and grocery stores owned by the Woolworths Group of Australia. The
company Woolworths was founded in the year 1924. Woolworths has specialization in the area
of groceries, which includes fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, poultry and packaged food.
However, the respective chain of supermarkets also sell DVDs, health and beauty products,
personal care goods, household and domiciliary goods, pet food, baby products and stationary.
Woolworths also has its online portals where they follow “click and collect” home delivery
service for providing goods and products to the online customers. At present, Woolworths has
981 supermarkets all over Australia (Woolworths.com.a.2019).
Strategic Goal
The strategic objectives of Woolworths Group of supermarkets are to put their customers in the
first place across all the other brands. The main strategic goal of the organization is to provide
the best possible service which is highly “customer oriented” and mark themselves as “customer

driven” enterprise with the best ever actions and solutions for an ultimate customer satisfaction.
The company gives priority to sustainability in terms of sales and marketing with an end- to- end
process and systems excellence for an ultimate customer experience.
Woolworths: Purpose, vision and value
The mission of Woolworths is to provide the best convenience, value and quality to their
customers. The purpose of Woolworths Group is to create a better experience for a better
tomorrow for the employers, employees as well as the customers, along with the shareholders
and community they serve.
Organizational structure
The organizational structure of Woolworths Group is hierarchical where the employees of the
organization are grouped with every department having a supervisor. The supervisor, on the
other hand, is again supervised by the Executive officers and the executive officers are also
managed and supervised by the board of directors. The hierarchical organizational structure goes
vertical in the power sharing maze and it is considered to be one of the most popular
organizational structure and most common in nature, present in maximum companies and
enterprises.
Professional development
The company Woolworths Group is committed to the professional development of their
employees. Woolworths Group views learning and development as a significant way of
investment on human resources for the future growth of the company. Woolworths Group is
committed to provide opportunities for all the employees to achieve their professional goals and

progress in their career through continued learning and development. The company provides
training such as Supermarket Retailing Certificate and scholarship programs. The company also
provides career developmental opportunities to the diverse employee strength by providing
special opportunities to the indigenous employee population (Woolworths.com.a.2019).
My Team: Purpose and Objectives
The designation or the position that I am striving for in the respective company is that of
a Business Analyst. The department that would be escorting my designation in the respective
company is the Research and Development department of Woolworths Group. The purpose of
the Research and Development department of Woolworths Group performs a number of highly
important roles within an organization. The Research and Development wing of a company looks
after the research, planning and implementing new programs and protocols into the respective
company and also overviews the development of the products and services offered by the
company.
The objectives of the research and development department of Woolworths Group is to
obtain new knowledge that would be applicable to the needs of the company’s business
proceedings which would result in new and improved products, processes, systems or services
that can increase the sales and profitability of the company. The primary objective of Research
and development wing is to provide latest, efficient and effective solutions to the company, in
terms of cost, profitability and operations, for the best business dealings and product
development.

My designation- Business Analyst: An Overview
I have chosen the designation of a Business Analyst for my career and I am a student of
business management. The job of Business Analyst is challenging yet intriguing in nature. In
generic terms, Business Analysts work with organizations to help them improve their processes
and systems. The business analysts are diligent and patient researchers who passionately research
and analyze the contemporary business environment, compare, contrast and evaluate their
findings with the global business environment from the past till the present and offer appropriate
solutions to different business problems the company can go through. Business Analysts are
researchers and scholars who keep themselves updated with the latest news and happenings in
the world of trade and commerce globally and locally. Business Analysts play a critical and an
important role in decoding and deciphering the condition and future of many businesses.
Business Analysts form a bridge between business ideas and business capabilities by providing
the entrepreneurs knowledge and insight about the business environment and actions that might
or might not be taken (Brijs 2016). The Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for business analysts
are provided hereafter:
1. Stakeholder’s satisfaction: Feedback from stakeholders regarding the criticism (good and
bad) about the business solutions provided by the respective business analyst.
2. Time frame from ideation of requirements to approval from clients: How much time did
the business analyst take to identify, realize, acknowledge and understand the client’s key
problems and provide them with the solution? How much time was spent on rework?
3. Improvement in productivity: the solutions designed by the business analyst should be
productive and would also provide value to the client.

4. Time and cost reduction in business: The solutions by the business analysts should be on
time and within the budget. The solution would also be cost saving and have
sustainability in terms of resource allocation and usage.
5. Team satisfaction: The business solutions provided by the business analysts would be
effective and must satisfy the entire department-in- charge of the company which would
include Quality Assurance, Evaluation, development and testing (Brijs 2016).
The required skills necessary for a business analyst are multifaceted and multidimensional.
However, the most customary skills necessary for a business analyst is the skills of research and
investigation. A business analyst should be curious towards any kind of entrepreneurial matters.
He/she should also be diligent, patient and perseverant as he/she has to document and write about
the analysis and interpretations that would be carried out by him/her during the time of research.
A business analyst should be a good interpreter of the objectives of the business as well as the
possible outcomes. He/ she should have dexterity in time management also in order to maintain
punctuality while providing business solutions to his/her clients (Prince et al. 2015).
A business analyst should be having a sound knowledge in business analysis and business
management. He/she should at least have a bachelor’s degree in management studies. He/she
should be fluent in English and other important official languages. He/she should have basic
aptitude in mathematics, science and logical reasoning. He should also have the dexterity of
understanding entrepreneurship and its dimensions. A candidate who has post-graduation
certificate in Business Analysis or Business Management is the suitable candidate for being a
business analyst. Candidates must also have certain professional courses, such as financial
management courses and the like to be a proper candidate for the post of business analyst. The

person should also have a history of conducting and carrying out research works (Paul, Cadle
and Yeates 2014).
The basic technical skills required to become a business analyst are: the skills of utilizing ICT
(Information and communication technologies) resources for data analysis and review. He should
be fast in data analysis. He should also possess the art and skill of documentation and financial
planning. Problem solving skills are also considered to be customary to the business researchers
and analysts. Time management and other managerial skills are the other secondary skills that
are necessary for a business analyst. Therefore, my selection of being a Business Analyst is
justified and I think I would be getting a plethora of scope and opportunities in my career by
getting associated with the respective company (Prince et al. 2015)
