Reflective journal is all about a means for students to reflect on what they learnt and
experienced things in a situation. In other words, it is an individual record that comprises
student’s learning experience and it also a apace in which an individual records and reflects on
their own observations along with responses to circumstances that can be further utilised for
exploring addition to analysing thinking ways (Bassot, 2016). The present reflective journal
based on BBC 2 Iplayer that is watched by a student who was unable to attend placement in
London Royal free hospital because of Covid – 19. The reflective journal is about case of
Stanley who was treated in the hospital.

Covid – 19 is one of infectious disease which caused by severe respiratory syndrome
corona virus 2. Its common symptoms include shortness of breath, fever, loss of smell addition to
taste, cough and fatigue. Gibbs cycle module is one of effective reflection module which leads to
an individual through distinct stages for making experience sense (Maheshwari and Singh,
2017). Watching BBC 2 Iplayer helped me in analysing the efforts that are made by staff of
London Royal Free Hospital to treat patients suffering from the pandemic disease. The elements
of the model are as follows:
Description: Following Covid – 19, I was not able to do my placement at London Royal
Free Hospital. The disease is a pandemic one that has lost lives of many numbers of people
across the world. London Royal Free Hospital is one of Trust Group which offers wide types of
acute medical services such as dermatology, orthopaedics and so on (Otter and Et. Al., 2016).
The deadly disease is approaching at its peak and almost all its bed is filled with patients
suffering from the corona virus. At same time, I also saw that ten per cent of the staff members
of the hospital are off sick as well as are under self isolation which is creating challenges for
providing safe level of staffing. Stanley is a corona patient of 73 years age which has been
hospitalised for around 3 weeks with symptoms of the disease. He is been looked by consultant
physician that is David Levy. Stanley is on maximum oxygen which has been given to him on
the ward despite of this he is making little progress. All with David, the entire team is also

is no specific medicine or drug for killing the virus. In this situation, David is treating Stanley
with supportive care which is quite useful for keeping vital organ system functioning. I also
observed that providing oxygen is critical for lung ailment but it is necessary treatment which
supports bodies to deal with infection themselves.
Thoughts and feeling: In the situation, I was thinking to help Stanley with other measures
or precautions so that he can get cured as soon as possible. At same time, I am feeling worst that
I am unable to join the organisation at the time when it needs most help. In the hospital, various
number of patients facing same disease are suffering and the entire team of hospital are making
huge efforts to cure them. Many of the patients have been cured but Stanley was the one who
was making little progress after so many efforts. I also felt that only medicines or other
supportive care is not enough for treating Stanley. The patient also needs other treatment
including rehabs, exercises and so on (Schembari, Jobes and Horgan, 2016). After watching the
video, I felt too hurtful for condition of Stanley who was going through tough phases at this age.
The doctor who was treating Stanley also felt too miserable for giving wrongful hopes to his
family by saying that they will soon unit with family. At same time, the doctor was making large
attempts and also consulting with other doctors to treat the patient at this age.
Evaluation: In the documentary, I experienced various good and bad things. The good
thing that I experienced in the documentary was effort of doctor and the entire team of London
Royal Free Hospital to treat Stanley from pandemic disease of corona virus. At same time, I also
experienced good thing that the support given by family members of the patient to the doctor to
cure them from the disease. New ways or treatment that was adopted by David Levy to cure
Stanley was also other good thing that I learnt from the documentary. Protective equipment
addition to other supplies that are supplied to workers and patients at sufficient level at all phases
from which Stanley arrived to assessment also helped me in improving my knowledge about the
ways things are managed in the hospital in effective manner. Despite of the good things, there is
certain bad experience that I evaluated from the documentary. I evaluated that doctors, patients
and their family are facing tough phases. The treatments given to Stanley were painful and also
created huge mental health distress. The wife of Stanley is at home and praying for recovery of
Stanley as soon as possible so that they can again spend their lives together as family.
Analysis: In accordance with the documentary episode, I analysed that the pandemic
situation is at peek. All the citizens that are safe from the disease needs to take masks and

sanitizers with them at all duration whenever they moves out of their home. Moreover, I
analysed that doctors in order to cure Stanley are required to make additional attempts and sure
him as soon a s possible as the virus do not last long in the body. At same time, the medicines
and treatments given to Stanley are showing limited success that means something which can
treat the patient is required to be implemented. In the documentary, it is showed that doctors are
making efforts but I analysed that they are required to make more attempts and also needs to pay
more attention towards situation of Stanley. It also analysed that it’s the responsibility of staff of
the hospital to take all kinds of necessary equipments while treat patients with the disease and
providing information about true situation through which the patient is going through to its
family members so that people can hope and pray for their wellbeing by sitting at home (Dening
and Et. Al., 2016).
Conclusion: From the documentary, I concluded by making certain changes in the way
treatments given to Stanley, his condition can be cured in some early duration. Stanley was
admitted in hospital when the virus damaged its body and now it is becoming huge difficult to
treat him or cure him with same treatments that were given to other patients. If I was on place of
David, I would have used experimental medication that is remdesivir which could have protected
the body of the patient from being damaged. This drug could have stopped the disease from
replicating to person’s body (Yang, Hakky and Carrion, 2016). Moreover, by using antiviral
drugs at initial stage of disease would be effectual in prevent the virus from doing huge damage
to the body of Stanley and also boost its recovery growth.
Action plans: If the situation through which Stanley passed happen again then in this
situation, I would have followed all the workings systematically and with involvement of entire
team so to cure the patient as early as possible. At same time, if more severe symptoms are seen
in patient, then they will be giving them effective treatment that includes medication for reducing
fever, fluids for reducing dehydration risk and supplemental oxygen (Rodríguez and Et. Al.,
2017). Moreover, I will also contact with doctors of the nations that are successful recovery
patients facing the disease at this age so that I can adopt the tactics or treatment to cure the
patients that enters into the hospital. I will also involve my senior management for reviewing the
condition of Stanley and will take recommendations from the patient as untimely as possible.

CONCLUSION
From the reflective report it has been concluded that disease of Covid - 19 is causing huge
losses of lives across the world. It is the virus which is dangerous for people above the age of 60
and children below the age of 10. It spreads among people through close contacts, mainly
through small droplets from coughing, talking as well as sneezing. While treating and curing a
patient suffering the disease, the good experience gained by the team of hospital is about sharing
information or knowledge about medications and other ways of treatment addition to support
given by family members of the patient to the doctor. However, giving false hope about recovery
of patient to their family is one of bad experience felt by an individual. By using experimental
medication and antiviral drugs at initial stage of disease helps in prevent the virus causing huge
damages to body of patient and helps in recovering soon.
