Abstract:
The increasing environmental concerns of organisations and society have created a need to
adopt sustainable measures many organisations. In hospitality industry this issue is taken care of
by having greener hotel initiative and eco friendly measures for better sustainability. Present
report is based on making a evaluation of the way sustainable hotels are using some initiatives to
reduce the environmental impact. It is generally done by reducing of waste cutting down of water
usage and saving of energy in form of natural resources.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Organisations are moving towards a sustainable approach especially in the changing
environment. Sustainability in business organisations is very important to contribute towards the
environment and society. Different sustainable business practices are contributing positively
towards different issues that are faced by human beings and environment. In the hospitality
organisation being part of a diverse range of environment related aspects, there is urgent need to
make use of some sustainable approaches. For this purpose the present research report is based
on analysing the contribution of the sustainable business practices. It is based on evaluation of
the hospitality industry contribution towards better environmental performance. Novotel London
blackfriars is having presence across London and different parts of UK. They are offering
complete facilities of 100% innovation such as glass screen that can be transparent or opaque
with a touch of button and is easily separated from the rooms. They are having a competitive
advantage in terms of eco-friendly products and sustainable approaches. They have been able to
create a brand image by offered of proper facilities to their customers.
In the initial chapter of this research report there is introduction to the overall research work
and the set aims and objectives. In second chapter there is use of literature review for the purpose
of analysing the information from existing sources. The third chapter is based on analysing the
overall research methodology that has been selected by the researcher in course of this research
work. The fourth chapter is related with analysis of the collected information from primary
sources. Further, there is drawing up of several recommendations according to the setting aims
and objectives in order to reach relevant conclusions. There is application of both primary and
secondary research methods to collect the information to further analyse and achieve the set aim
and objectives.
Background to the study
The hospitality industry is working towards taking of green initiatives that includes solar
power installation as water diversions and smart showers. With time the overall efforts of

sustainable hotels in business have significantly increase because of the growing concern of
society. There are many different measures that are taken by hospitality organisation so that they
are able to move towards sustainability and manage the overall expenditure. The present research
report is going to assist in investigating the sustainable practices of hotel industry and way it can
help in improving the environmental and societal performance.
Aim and objectives
Research Aim: “To investigate the sustainable practices of hotel industry and its role in
improving their environmental and societal performance. A case study on Novotel London
Blackfriars”.
Research objectives:
To evaluate the extent of Novotel London Blackfriars’ commitment towards sustainable
practices.
To determine the initiatives gained by Novotel hotels through implementation of
sustainable practices
To identify the methodologies that hotels need to apply to measure their progress toward
achievement of sustainable practice.
Research Questions
What is the extent of Novotel hotels’ commitment towards sustainable practices?
What are the indications of Novotel hotels’ initiatives for its sustainable practices?
What are the methodologies that Novotel hotels must apply for measuring its progress
toward achievement of sustainable practice?
Chapter 2: Literature review
Novotel London Blackfriars’ commitment towards sustainable practices
As per Omer and Noguchi (2020), some of the aspects where this hotel has contributed
towards sustainable approaches are saving the laundry cost. They are working towards creating
awareness among the guests to reuse the towers before going to the reforestation projects. This
group has planted across 2,000 trees in days since year 2019. In 2013 also AC or Morocco joins
the forces for planting 2011 trees. It was done in collaboration with “Femmes du Rif”. This

brand is now using the olive oil that is produced from these trees in their local hotels. The
Pullman hotels have also install beehives on the roof in year 2011. The main aim is to produce
honey for their guests that can be eaten in breakfast. In Bangkok siam square is producing
spirulina that is a microorganism that is rich in protein and different types of amino acids. 90
percent of hotel branches have excluded the endangered sea food from the menus and there is
now focus on use of 95% of ecological products. This group has been able to successfully set
high standards for using sustainable hospitality operations. They have been awarded with
uploaded hotels performance awards. Hoteliers are encouraged to focus more on sustainability
measures based on bronze, silver, gold and platinum.
The Black fairs hotel is having a platinum rating. The gold and platinum ratings are present on
the Accord website that is helping them in building up of an effective brand image for their
target segment of customers. BREEAM is one of the most effective environmental assessment
methods and a rating system that is used for buildings. Accor hotel has been able to get excellent
rating with post construction score of 72.17 percent. There has been also use of a combined heat
and power system that is installed in the building for the purpose of Extracting thermal heat from
exhaust ventilation (Gebregiorgs, 2018). There has been also use of energy for the purpose of
heat water and electricity in these hotels.
Other sustainable initiatives include the use of low energy lamps for permanent lighting in the
bedrooms and use of energy efficient refrigerators in bedrooms. There is also use of energy
efficient boilers for the purpose of recovering energy from ventilation. Recycling is also
extensively used in electronic equipment’s and cooking oil. The hotel is using showers and tap
that are fitted with water flow regulator. There is rain water harvesting that is used for water
efficiency. Guess are always encouraged to reuse the sheets and towel if they are staying for a
longer time period than a one night. For different purposes there is always use of eco label
organic products and ecological paper.
Apart from this another major initiatives have been use of e-Learning courses in different types
of eight languages for the purpose of providing training to it 16000 plus workforce. Planet 21
research is available free on their website. These are some of the major initiatives that have
helped in using of a complete sustainable approach by Accor group (THE PLANET 21
PROGRAMME, 2020).
