CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
Talent management within an organisation is the competency, power and ability of
employees. It is a continues process that includes sourcing, recurring, developing, attracting,
retaining and promoting employee while meeting the organisation’s objectives and requirements
simultaneously. There are different contextualising approaches that are effective in talent
management such as effective selection process, effective compensation etc. For this project,
Debenhams is a chosen British online retailer that was founded in year 1778 William Debenham
and headquartered in 334–348 Oxford Street, London, England, UK. Debenhams is specialising
in selling of fashion clothing, shoes, accessories, toys, gifts, cosmetics etc. Within an
organisation, there are various number of employees are working with purpose of accomplishing
long-term goals and objectives of company (Cardenas-Navia, and Fitzgerald, 2019). Debenhams
wants to expand their business operations in different countries; it is only possible with the help
of talent management. For managing talent company can use contextualising approaches i.e.
developing job descriptions, providing development opportunities and many others. All these
approaches are effective in talent management that turn to impact in successfully expansion of
business in different countries.
1.1 Research Aim and Rationale
Aim
Main aim of this research is “To identify the contextualising approaches and its
significance in management of talent within an organisation: A study on Debenhams
Rationale
Main rationale of choosing this project is to determine the benefits of using
contextualising approaches in talent management. Another purpose of conducting this research is
to identify the approaches of managing talent and benefits of those approaches for an
organisation (Choi, Ravichandran and O'Connor, 2018). With the help of this research,
researcher can easily identify the challenges of the use of ineffective talent management
approaches on business.

1.4 Significance of the Research
Current research or topic is highly significant for various stakeholders i.e. students,
researcher and companies. For students, this research helps them by increasing their knowledge
regarding the contextualising approaches to talent management and its effectiveness within a
workplace (Daft, 2021). For researcher, present study facilitate them by improving their different
types of research qualities i.e. presentation skill, data collection, time management etc. For
companies, this research or topic facilitate them by providing accurate data regarding the benefits
of talent management in business performance and goodwill.

2.1 Introduction of Literature Review
Literature review introduces to the comprehensive summary of previous study on a topic.
This is the systematic process used for collecting secondary data from available sources i.e.
scholarly articles, magazines, books, journals and other sources relevant to a research topic.
Therefore, all these sources are useful in achieving of research aim and objectives from research
questions.
2.2 Main Body
2.2.1 What are the contextualising approaches to talent management in context of
Debenhams?
As per the opinion of Gino (2018), talent management is a significant aspect for an
organisation. There are various contextualising approaches that are useful for company in talent
management. Some effective contextualising approaches to talent management in context to
Debenhams are described as under:
Developing job description: This is a main approach of talent management within a
workplace of Debenhams. This is the role of company to develop detailed job description for
business post. There must be clearly mentioned about the job role and responsibilities, salary etc.
This will help an organisation in recruitment of talented person that result in talent management
for longer period of time.
Providing development opportunities: This is another contextualizing approach that is
useful for Debenhams in management of talent within a workplace. For this, company should
offer ongoing opportunities to their existing employees because this will help workers in
development of their profession effectively (Gwanzura, 2019). Organising day-to-day training
classes and management of training programs are beneficial in increasing valuable experience,
knowledge and opportunities among employees. This will be beneficial in talent management for
longer period of time and in successful manner.
