TITLE: The role of language dilemma in the care of service users – A study on Wellington
Hospital.
TASK 1
1.1 Research project outline specification
In the present scenario, health and social care organizations provide services to people so
that they can get recover in more effective manner. The service providers adopt different
strategies and technological advancements so that they can offer more quality and innovative
treatment. There are some factors which can affect the performance of such care centres like
social, emotional, intellectual and physical (Green and Abutalebi, 2013). Along with this, there
are some issues which are faced by them at the time of providing treatment to people like
communication, language, organizational differences and so on. These needs to be analyse by the
higher authority of hospital centre so that they can enhance their performance and social welfare
can be increased. Language dilemma is one of the issue which is faced by all the members of
organization like doctors, patients. Sometimes, they will not be able to understand the language
of each other so due to this communication will not be established.
The present research project is based on Wellington hospital which perform their operations
in United Kingdom. They are offering some services like cardiac, neurosurgery, rehabilitation
and so on. It is a private organization which faces some challenges related to the language
barriers or dilemmas. Here, in the current study researcher will use some tools and techniques so
that they can evaluate that how language dilemma can affect the treatment of service users.
Rational of project
This section of the study is more focused on the current issues or problem statement which
are faced by researcher at the time of conducting research. The rational identifies the current
status of the project and strategies which are adopted by researcher in order to conduct further
analysis. The research is a statement that is explain the impact of language dilemma on the
performance of the organization or on the treatment of their patients (Fiumara, 2013). So, by
conducting the research it become easy for them as these issues can be resolved effectively.
This is an issue for health and social care organizations as people don’t know about the
languages of different countries. As there are many care centres who are using some innovative
techniques so that they can effectively communicate with their service users. So, at present this

issue has become more important for the health and social care organizations. The present study
is focused on the language dilemma issue so that it can effectively evaluated that how such
problems cannot provide proper treatment to their patients.
Significance of study
The current research is significant for all the parties who are involved into this and it also
creates some values for them. The present field of study is based on language dilemma and this
may affect their treatment procedure in negative manner. In this, service users play an important
role and what kind of services should be offered to them so that their satisfaction level can be
improved (Adair, Tobin and Arzubiaga, 2012). The present analyse help the firm in order to
identify the requirements of patients and what strategies should be adopted by them in achieving
success at the marketplace. This also provides a valuable insight which explain the strategies that
how a business organization can gain the attention of their consumers and can achieve
competitiveness. This can also set a base a for other studies which are going to be conducted in
future. So, future researchers can also refer the results and outcomes which are carried out from
past studies. Furthermore, this is beneficial for both health & social care organizations and their
services users.
Literature review
In this section of research project, secondary resources have been used by researcher in
order to increase the understanding about different aspects of topic. These resources are related
to journals, books, research papers, magazines, articles, internet sources and so on. After
reviewing the different literatures, the overall field of study can be carried out in more effective
or efficient manner. By referring different authors, it can be identified the significance of
language dilemma and its impact on the treatment of service users. So, in this way overall
evaluation can be conducted which will help the researcher in accomplishing the specified
objectives.
Research aim and objectives
Aim: To investigate the impact of language dilemma on the care or treatment of patients – A
study on Wellington hospital.
Research objectives: Some objectives are there which are framed by researcher in order to
accomplish the field of study. These are as follows:

consuming at the workplace.
To recommend some strategies to Wellington Hospital so that they will be able to gain
the attention of different consumers.
Research questions
Some research questions are there which can be made on the basis of above specified
objectives. When these goals are achieved then due to this questions can be resolved and in this
manner it can be evaluated that how language dilemma can affect the patient care. Some of these
are as follows:
Q1. What is language dilemma?
Q2. What kind of factors affect the treatment of patients in health and social enterprise?
Q3. How language dilemma can affect service users care?
Q4. What ways are there through which Wellington Hospital can achieve competitive
advantage?
TASK 2
1.2 Factors that contribute into the research project selection
Some factors are there which contribute into the selection of research project as by
focusing on these overall questions can be resolved in an effective manner These different
aspects are like skills, knowledge, time, cost, interest, access to information and so on. The cost
of project should be low and the overall field of study should be completed on time. Along with
these, there are some ethical issues which needs to be considered by researcher at the time of
conducting the analysis (Manan, David and Dumanig, 2015). Some of these issues are as
follows:
Informed consent: In this, an individual voluntarily and knowingly give his consent and
their rights has been protected. So, at the time of conducting the study, researcher has to give
more importance to the patient’s rights so that ethical consider ability can be achieved. Along
with this, people should have choices to take part in the research or not. As it is the responsibility
of researcher to take care of such things.

Anonymity and confidentiality: The researcher have to take care of some aspects like
anonymity and confidentiality. The source has been attached from where the information is
collected. The confidentiality should also be maintained of the responses which is gathered on
the basis of primary sources.
Respect for privacy: Researcher has to respect for the personal information of respondents.
By maintaining the records of people, their privacy can be maintained in an effective or efficient
manner. So, through this overall research can be conducted in ethical way.
1.3 Summary of initial background with references
In this, section views of different authors are gathered so that it can be effectively
evaluated that how language dilemma can affect the care of people.
Language dilemma
According to the views of Cohen, (2014) language dilemma is a kind of factor which
divide the people into different groups as per the geographical location or area. People generally
prefer their regional languages for their communication. Sometimes, due to this factor it become
difficult for an individual as they will not be able to establish communication with others easily.
Health and social care organization is the one which provide services to clients so that their
health can be improved in an efficient way. On the other hand, it has been analysed by Dörnyei
(2014) that in some cases doctors or nurses will not be able to communicate with their patients
directly as they are not aware about languages other than regional. In order to remove this kind
of dilemma, higher authorities have to adopt some strategies so that they will be able to offer
quality services. They can use transmitters through which language can be converted so this
become easy for both the parties doctors and service users.
Factors which affect treatment of service users
As per the views of Babaci-Wilhite, Geo-JaJa and Lou (2012) some factors are there
which can affect the treatment of an individual. Firstly, it is the responsibility of manager to
create a peaceful environment at the care centre so that a patient may feel comfortable. Some of
these factors are like social, physical, emotional, communication, culture and so on. Apart from
this, Mackey and Gass (2015) stated that social is related to the needs and demands of an
individual which should be take care by the employers. An appropriate culture should be
provided by the manager to their service users so that their stress level will not get increased. So,
4
Document Page
these aspects can affect the treatment of an individual and they will not be able to get recover on
time.
Impact of language dilemma on the patients
May (2012) stated that language dilemma is an issue which can affect the treatment that is
given to patients. If this kind of issue is get increased, then effective communication will not get
establish between doctors and their patients. So, in this way neither service provide will
understand the needs of their service users nor users will understand the prescription which is
suggested by nurses. Apart from this, it can be analysed that this kind of barrier should be
reduced to some extent so that consumers will be able to get effective services.
1.4 Research methodology
There are various approaches which can be used by researcher in order to carry out
analysis in more effective way. It is a type of framework which includes some different tools and
techniques so this may help them in conducting the analysis. Here, justification of such
approaches are also given.
Research design: An appropriate design should be choosing by researcher as this will act
like a blueprint for the current research. Some various designs are like descriptive, experimental,
exploratory, casual and so on (Allwood, 2012). Here, in the current field of study descriptive has
been followed by research as this will help in carrying out in-depth analysis.
Research approach: There are two types of research approaches like inductive and
deductive. These are used in an effective way so that outcome can be achieved without getting
deviated from path. In deductive, hypothesis is created. Here, inductive has been followed by
researcher where new theory has been developed on the basis of observation.
Research philosophy: Interpretivism and positivism are two philosophies which can be
used in order to getting the information (Geerts, 2011). Positivism is related to some
mathematical as well as statistical data which is not appropriate for the current field of study.
Here, interpretivism has been used in which human perceptions are identified on the basis of
survey.
Data collection techniques: Data has been collected on the basis of primary as well as
secondary sources. Primary is first hand data which is gathered through questionnaire. Along
with this, secondary information is collected via books, journal, research papers and so on.

Sampling technique: It is a kind of technique which is used by researcher in order to get a
small sample from large population (Hussein,2015). Here, random sampling is followed where
sample which is selected for the survey is 20 and overall investigation is performed on patients.
Data analysis: The data can be analysed on the basis of qualitative research methods
where thematic analysis has been used by researcher. By using this approach, different themes
can be formed and graphs can be made accordingly.
1.5 Plan
2.1 Resources for the current research
There are some resources which are used by researcher in order to accomplish the study in
an effective manner (Roberts, 2013). By using these resources overall specified goals can be
achieved. Primary and secondary resources are their which can be used by an individual so that
overall understanding of the topic can be increased. Primary resources are related to survey like
interview, observation, focus group, questionnaire and so on. By using these, first hand data can
be collected and it can be identified that how language dilemma can affect the treatment of an
individual. Along with this, secondary resources are related to the various articles, journals,
research papers and so on. On the basis of this, overall data can be gathered related to field of
study so this may help in conducting the analysis.
Along with this, there are some other resources like financial and human which also play
their important role in order to complete the research. These resources should be utilised
appropriately so that success can be achieved.

2.2 Research investigation
The researcher uses an appropriate investigation approach in order to gather the views and
opinions of the people (Snyder, 2012). Here, questionnaire has been used in which both open
ended and close ended questions are included. This is the cost effective approach and it is not
time consuming so interpretation can be done effectively. Here, the target customer which is
selected by researcher is 20 and survey is conducted patients. Through this, it can be effectively
evaluated that language dilemma is acts like a barrier in health and social area. The questionnaire
is stated below:

3.1 Research evaluation techniques
Evaluation techniques has been used by researcher so that effective outcome can be
received appropriately. Here, qualitative method is followed in which information is gathered on
the basis of primary and secondary resources (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault, 2015). In this,
thematic analysis has been used which is based on the themes and graphs. By using this, overall
data can be assessed and it can be determined that how language barrier can affect the care of
patients. Apart from these, there are two formative and summative techniques which can be used
in order to get effective result. In formative, feedback is given from time to time but in
summative feedback is given after submitting the complete project. So, here summative
evaluation approach has been followed as this is more appropriate for the current field of study.

3.2 Data analysis
The data can be analysed on the basis of thematic approach where themes are formed and
their graphical representation can be prepared. Different themes can be prepared on the basis of
the views of respondents.
Theme 1: People uses different services of Wellington Hospital.
Findings: After conducting the primary survey, it can be interpreted that there are approx
60% respondents who are agreed that they consumed services of Wellington Hospital. Along
with this, there are 25% service users says no and other 15% don’t remember.
