CHAPTER 1
1.1 Introduction
Equality and diversity is useful for every individual in attaining their key set of potential
which is free from any sort of prejudice and discrimination. The minimum wage is considered to
be as the lowest possible remuneration to the employers which has been paid to the workers
(Fidrmuc and Tena, 2019). This study will highlight on examining the concept of minimum wage
and how it traps people in the poverty. This study is very significant in completely understanding
the key concept behind the equality and diversity within the organization to provide appropriate
wages which fulfils the needs and requirements of the individual person.
1.2 Research Background
Royal Dutch Shell a public limited company which has been founded in the year 1907 by
Marcus Samuel, Henri Deterding, Samuel Samuel and Jean B.A. Kessler. This company is
headquartered in Haagse Hout, The Hague, Netherlands. The registered office is in Shell Centre,
London, England. It is the third largest company across the globe which mainly deals in oil and
gas, lubricants, petroleum, natural gas, LNG, Petrochemicals, etc.
1.3 Problem Statement
The key problem statement while carrying out the research is how people gets trapped in the
concept of minimum wage rate within the organization.

1.5 Rationale
This study is useful because it helps me in carrying out the research for the academic
purpose. This research is useful in enhancing the knowledge and also contributing by developing
new understanding associated with the subject matter. Moreover, this study is also carried out
because of the personal interest of the researcher. The proposed research topic will be useful in
contributing towards the development of the new understanding associated with the subject
matter. This is one of the key current issue which helps in alleviating poverty by giving optimum
wage level to the employees to meet the basic needs and requirements. This study is carried out
because it will be useful for the researcher to find effective recommendations to alleviate poverty
and maintain equality and diversity within the organization.
Chapter 2: Literature Review
This part of the chapter is useful in gaining in- depth understanding and knowledge
associated with the research aim and objectives. It helps to gain argumentative statements in
order to attain better results and outcomes.

Prowse and Fells, (2016) sought to determine the fact that, equality and diversity is useful
in ensuring that every individual within the organization has equal set of opportunity within the
workplace. Diversity is useful in taking into account the difference between the various group of

discrimination. This is the good practice which ensures that the services provided to the

organization are treated with utmost level of dignity and respect. Johnson, (2017) established the
fact that, equal wage pay within organization means employees who are performing same level
of work must be paid equally. This is useful in minimizing the risk of the equal pay and helps in
creating fairer level of society. Equal pay act is useful in prohibiting the pay discrimination on
the basis of sex, age, gender, etc. There should be no discrimination between the men and
women and must be paid according to their capability and the knowledge efficiency. The
employees who are getting equal pay without any sort of discrimination in turn eventually
improves the performance and productivity of the workers within the organization.

Reeves and et.al., (2017) established the fact that, the minimum wage is considered to be
as the lowest possible remuneration to the employees. The hourly rate for the minimum wages is
only dependent on the age of the student. The national minimum wage within the UK is referred
to as the minimum pay per hour to which all the employees are entitled to. This is the lowest
degree of remuneration which the employer of the organization has to legally pay to the workers.
This is one of the key significant measure because it helps in protecting the workers within the
labour force. The concept behind minimum wage is significant in creating minimum standard of
living which is useful in protecting the well- being and health of the employees. Atkinson and
et.al., (2017) sought to determine the fact that, the minimum wage rate per hour in the UK 2020
for 25 years and above is £8.72 per hour. For 21 years to 24 years old the rate is £8.20 per hour.
People who are aged between 18 and 20 years has minimum wage rate of £6.45 per hour and
individuals who belong to the age group of 16 to 17 years has minimum wage rate of £4.55 per
hour.
To critically evaluate how the minimum wage traps people in the poverty.
Georgiadis and Manning (2020) stated that higher minimum wage will only help the
people who have job but not those who are unable to find an employment. So it only favour more
skilled and experienced employees who are more productive and at the same time, it also traps
people in poverty. Such as it restrict teenage people and young adults by discouraging their
employment which means they are unable to acquire the necessary employment skills at such a
young age. On the other side, Redmond, Doorley and McGuinness (2020) argued that minimum
age also decline social mobility which in turn reduce poverty as well. Hence there is a strong link
between the minimum wage and poverty which is a root cause of poverty. Around more than

17% of the total population are working with a minimum wage in a companies and organization
also take an advantage because the rate is increases from 2016 to 2020.
On the other side, McGuinness, Redmond and Delaney (2020) critically evaluated that
most of the company trap women by helping their families to get out of poverty by offering them
minimum wage, but actually company traps them and also took an advantage from the same.
Beside this, employers are also responds to higher cost in a variety of ways and also make the
things harder for people. Also, due to higher cost within a market, company’s price of employers
are also increases along with greater expenses to consumer. Thus, employers do not have any
incentive which in turn leads to earn profit by raising the difference. Kim and Jang (2020) also
argued that higher minimum wage throw poor people to the bus, but improve the marketability
within an organization in order to create a higher price so that they meet the demand of a
company. So it can be stated that raising the minimum wage was not actually help those on part
time work nor it help to unemployed and disable person, but it only trap people to stay strong
connectivity.
Conclusion
By summing up above it has been concluded that companies comply with minimum wage
act in order to promote equality and diversity but this is somehow affect the results in opposite
manner. Also, the section concluded that in UK, the minimum wage rate is describe within a firm
but when companies do not comply, this affect the results in negative manner.

Research methodology is the procedure and a plan which is used to determine and
analyse the information related to a topic so that it will help to evaluate the validity and

which questions are designed for respondents in order to answer the question which in turn help
