Introduction
An entrepreneur is a person who creates his own business, a new business and who plays
a key role in the running of an economy (Bird 2019). Entrepreneurs have the initiative and the
skills that are necessary for anticipating future and current needs and for bringing the right ideas
for product and service innovation and development to the marketplace. The entrepreneur
combines land, capital as well as labor for the manufacture of goods or for the provision of
services by forming an enterprise, known also as a firm. In markets that are characterized by high
degrees of uncertainty, it is the entrepreneur who can play a leading role in mitigating the
uncertainty by judging or assuming the risk that is taking place or is about to take place. While
entrepreneurship for the most part is a high risk undertaking, it can also be an activity that is
hugely rewarding in many ways as the primary purpose of entrepreneurship is to generate
growth, innovation and economic wealth in the society (Bird 2019). At times, entrepreneurship
engage in social interventions or undertake social responsibility measures for the upliftment of
society, as part of the work they do, out of a feel of moral obligation or a desire to give back to
the society in which they do business in (Jennings et al. 2014). This assignment prepares a
proposal for a research project that investigates the role that entrepreneurs can play in reducing
youth unemployment. The matter will be analyzed in the context of youth unemployment in
South Africa. For this purpose, the research mentions a background to the context or focus of
investigation, states the research aims, objectives and research questions as well as research
hypothesis, undertakes a brief literature review on the subject matter, states the methods of data
collection and data analysis to be deployed and concludes by listing the ethical considerations
that will be made when conducting the investigation.
