INTRODUCTION
Travel and tourism industry is the one of the fastest growing industry in many nations of the
world. In the present report, concept of responsible tourism and aviation are clearly explained in
detail. Their concepts are also discussed in detail. Along with this, steps taken by the business
firms in respect to responsible tourism and aviation are explained broadly. At end of the report,
firm’s response to challenges and opportunity created by concerns of society are discussed
briefly.
What is responsible tourism?
Responsible tourism is the term that is commonly used in the travel and tourism industry of
the UK. The definition of responsible tourism was developed in the Cape Town in 2002 in the
Summit that was organized in respect to the Sustainable development. In 2007 the definition that
was developed in this summit was widely accepted by the World tour market. Responsible
tourism mainly focused on promoting tourism across the globe by making available better
amenities to them and better places to visit. This means that in order to promote responsible
tourism in the nation government’s needs to develop tourist places by evolving surrounding area
and providing all facilities to the tourist in nearby area or city in which tourist place is located
(Frey and George, 2010). The definition that was developed in the Cape Town have wide scope
which promote various entities like hoteliers, tour operators, government, domestic people and
tourists to become ethical responsible and take action to make tourism more sustainable.
There are many points on which emphasis is given to make tourism more responsible than
before. Responsible tourism focused on minimizing negative economic, social and
environmental impact. This means that each and every nation of the world muse focused on
promoting and enhancing tourism sector in the nation but at same time must ensures that due to
elevation in tourism natural environment should not be endangered. The second main area in
which term responsible tourism focused is economic benefits for local people (Spenceley, 2012).
As per the concept of responsible tourism with increase in same economic development of
people must take place. It must not happen that few people are reaping entire advantage of
elevation in tourism or local people are not getting required earning in alignment to growth rate
that is observed in the tourism sector of the nation. With increase in tourism sector working
conditions in the relevant industry must also improve.

It can be said that concept of responsible tourism state that from same those employed in
the industry, tourist and local people must get maximum advantage. Elevation in tourism sector
must bring prosperity in the nation without negatively affecting natural environment and its
economic condition. Under responsible tourism stress is given on involving local people as
important stakeholders in decision making process on issues that affect their life and bring
changes in same. Apart from this emphasis is given on conservation of resources and cultural
heritage and safeguarding world rare species.
What is responsible aviation?
Responsible aviation in current time period is entirely focused on the negative impact that
operation of airplanes put on the natural environment. There are many project that are carried out
on the responsible aviation that are known by the name ERA or environmental responsible
tourism (Booyens, 2010). Responsible aviation is mainly focused on the reducing emanation of
poisonous gases from airplanes so as to reduce as much as possible damage to the natural
environment. Main objective of EVA is to ensure consistent growth in the aviation sector by
reducing or eliminating negative impacts on the natural environment that happen due to
emanation of harmful gases. Apart from this energy efficiency, use of energy alternatives and
reducing negative impact on environment are the three main components of the responsible
aviation.
The concept of responsible tourism is gaining wide popularity in the aviation industry of
the UK and other European nations. This is because every company that is operating in the travel
and tourism sector have its own corporate social responsibilities towards general public and the
nation. By following concept of responsible tourism business firms get a direction in which they
needs to perform their CRM activities. There are many firms that are operating in the aviation
industry and are currently working on innovation of technology or upgrading their fleet by
purchasing new airplanes that are equipped with the advanced technology. One of those firm is
British Airways which is well known across the globe for innovation (Klein, 2011). Hence, it can
be said that with passage of time period responsible tourism and aviation are gaining wide
popularity and business firms as well as governments are taking serious actions in the relevant
directions.
With passage of time it become very important for the government and business firms to
take more actions in order to ensure that all these things will promote employment opportunities

but at same time will not negatively affect the natural environment. In this regard many
conferences at international level needs to be organized where representatives of the nations can
exchange each other opinion and find out common pathways on which nations can agree without
compromising with their interests.
Why is it necessary to make tourism and aviation sector responsible
In order to evaluate the fact that “Responsible tourism and/or aviation is impossible
objective” it is very important to understand the reasons due to which strong emphasis is given
on the responsible tourism and aviation. This is because by identifying the needs and thereafter
by evaluating whether same can be satisfied it can be easily find out whether it is impossible to
achieve objective of responsible tourism and aviation (Isaac, 2010). It is very important to make
tourism sector responsible. This is because in many nations of the world like Greece and UK it is
the major source of income for the people. It is necessary to ensure that general public is
obtaining full advantage of the growth of the tourism sector that is observed in the nation. In
some countries of the world entire public is not benefited from growth of the relevant sector.
Instead, few firms are observing growth in their business which is not good for the nation. By
providing loan at cheaper rate general public can be motivated to commence business in tourism
sector and concentration of economic development in few hands can be prevented in order to
promote balance development.
Apart from this, in past few years it is observe that tourism across the nations increases
rapidly. Moreover, in the nations like UK inbound tourism is higher than outbound tourism.
Hence, in nation airline services are widely used by the local people then foreign people. Hence,
emanation of pollutants are adversely affecting natural environment which in turn affect people
health. It is possible to control carbon emanation from the airplanes by taking number of steps.
Like permit can be given to the specific number of people to visit the nation. Firms can be forced
to keep only fuel efficient airplanes in their fleet (Caruan and et.al., 2014). It can be said that
responsible tourism and aviation are possible objectives.
There are many stakeholders in the tourism industry like general public, tourists, tour
operators and government. Each of these stakeholders have their huge interest in the tourism
sector. General public wants more and more earning from tourism sector, tour operators wants
same thing from tourism. On other hand government wants to protect environment. All these
things can be achieved which are the essence of responsible tourism by formulating and

implementing suitable strategy in the business. It can be said that it is possible to achieve
sustainable tourism in the nation.
Reducing emanation of pollution is the main objective of the responsible aviation. It is the
business firms that are operating their airplanes and due to this reason it is also their
responsibility to reduce pollution from their airplanes. Business firms can reduce emanation of
pollutants from airplanes by making use of available alternatives (Sin, 2010). Moreover, airplane
manufacturing firms can make their airplanes fuel efficient which is currently done by the many
business firms. Hence, it can be said that it is possible to achieve objective of responsible
tourism.
How two industries are formulating strategy to respond to become more responsible?
In order to become more responsible and to implement the concept of responsible tourism
business firms are focusing on making more efficient use of water. Conservation of natural
resources and effective use of same is the major component of the responsible tourism concept.
In this regard some hotels like Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas is recycling the water so that same
can be again consumed and use for other purpose. By doing so it is saving water. There are many
hotels across the globe that are laying down emphasis on making efficient use of energy. In this
regard they are making rooms in such a way so that more and more sunlight can come inside
same and less energy is consumed in the room. Hence, by doing so more and more electricity is
saved which is developed by using natural resources like water and nuclear products like
Uranium or Thorium etc. In this way hotels in the tourism industry are conserving resources by
making efficient use of same. This indicate that responsible tourism is achievable objective.
Minimizing social impact is another major component of the responsible tourism concept.
In order to ensure this hotels are ensuring that guests that belongs to different cultures and colors
and nations are treated in systematic way with full respect and dignity. Hotel management
ensures that social values of guests are respected and due to any rule same does not get hurt
(Dodds and Kuehnel, 2010). Hotels are making available all kind of required amenities to the
local people on their demand without making any discrimination among them. Treatment in
proper way and making better places to live is the essence of the responsible tourism which are
full filled by the hotels in the above mentioned ways. This reflects that it is possible to achieve
responsible tourism concept in the real business world.

Economic benefits for local people is the another major component of responsible
tourism. In the UK tourism sector 3.1 million people are employed in current time period and it
is the third largest employer in the mentioned nation which cover 9.6% of total employment in
the relevant nation. In current time period there are about 262,268 tourism business in the UK.
This happened because government of the mentioned nation is fully committed towards growth
of the tourism industry in the nation (Sutawa, 2012). In past few years it takes many steps to
increase tourism industry in the nation. In this regard it make investment on development of
tourist places. Moreover, promote people to open their business in the relevant sector and in
respect to this make available loan at cheaper interest rates. Hence, by formulating these two
strategies it is not only enhancing employment but also ensure balance development of general
public. Entire benefits of growth of tourism sector are not received only be few people. This
reflects that it is possible to achieve the objective of the responsible tourism.
In respect to the responsible aviation many strategies are followed by the UK
government. In this regard, some regulations are prepared which help government in controlling
the noise at all local airports. This include setting of noise limits above which airplanes are not
allowed to produce noise. There are many restrictions that are placed on the night flights of the
airline firms. Moreover, paths for aircrafts are determined in such a way that they pass from
those areas which are less polluted. In this way, pollution is controlled by the UK government
and by implementing above discussed strategy it make efforts to control noise pollution on the
domestic land. Apart from government firms like British Airways are also making efforts at their
own level to become more responsible. In this regard it is running a program which is known by
the name “One destination” under which it is working on multiple areas and make efforts to
control emission of carbon, reducing waste, recycling waste and curtailing noise and air pollution
from its airplanes (Our strategy and objectives, 2009). In past few years in this regard firm
makes heavy investment in its business. By doing so it is performing corporate social
responsibility in systematic way. It can be said that in the UK not only government is making
serious efforts to control pollution but business firms are taking many innovative measures to
perform their social responsibility in respect to responsible aviation.

Firm’s response to the challenges and the opportunity posed by socio-economic and
environmental concern of society
Firms in the tourism and aviation industry are reacting positively to the threats that are
posed by the socio-economic and environment concern of the society. Companies across the
industries are focusing on use of advanced technology which help them in saving energy and
reducing pollution. Society is more concerned to the environment conditions that are prevalent in
the nation (Jamal, Camargo and Wilson, 2013). This concern is acting as opportunity for the
business firms. By adopting modern technology they are reducing harm to the natural
environment and by doing so creating a good image among the customers or general public. This
create different image of the firms like British airways from the competitors. It can be said that
origination of different image elevate brand recognition and help company in increasing its
revenue. Thus, it can be said that firm’s response to opportunity posed by socio-economic and
environmental concern of society is positive. It is big challenge for the company’s for the firms
to make heavy investment on purchase of advanced technology. In order to handle this problem
business managers are focusing on generating economies of scale in the business (Lovelock and
Lovelock, 2013). By doing so negative impact of heavy investment that is made on acquisition of
modern technology on the firm cash flows is minimized to maximum possible level. It can be
said that firms are positively reacting to the challenges and the opportunity posed by socio-
economic and environmental concern of society.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of above discussion it is concluded that travel and tourism sector is growing at
fast pace in many nations of the world. Responsible tourism and aviation are objectives that are
possible to achieve in real world. Due to elevation in relevant industries pollution is also
increasing at rapid pace. It is also conclude that over the past few years concept of responsible
tourism and aviation gain popularity among different entities. In this regard business firms and
government take many steps in their business. It is also concluded that large number of firms
make strategic business decisions in order to ensure that are they are full filling relevant
responsibilities in the industry in respect to responsible tourism/aviation. It is also concluded that
firms are reacting in positive way to the challenges and the opportunity posed by socio-economic
and environmental concern of society by innovating their existing technology base or by
purchasing new technology.
