Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Possible Outline of research and specification
Background of the study
In this competitive business environment, highly qualified employees are required for
organisations in every industry who possess the capabilities to provide innovative for expansion
of business ( Karim, Huda and Khan, 2012). Employees are considered as important asset of
business enterprise because they play important roles in providing continuous growth and
success of organisation in industry (Jehanzeb, Rasheed and Rasheed, 2013). In present scenario,
Companies are providing their major focus on selection of appropriate method through which
they will be able to select qualified employees at workplace. In retail sector, employer also
require a team that they can count to get the work doen while they focus on other aspects. For
effective employee's selection, various methods are applied by manager through which they can
attract best and required talent for specific job position. It is considered as complex task that
needs to be performed by managers through appropriate planning and following the process in
order to achieve the desired potential employees at workplace.
In addition, there are various important functions are required to be accomplished by
employees at workplace which requires expertise and experience. For accomplishment of task
such as production, marketing, promotion, sales, operations and human resource's management,
there is major requirement of potential employees. However, implementation of effective process
will enable the enterprise to attain right person for specific job position at workplace. In present
scenario, researcher needs to carry out analysis on the significance of effective employee
selection on organisation in retail industry. For this, ASDA Stores Ltd. is taken in to
consideration by Scholar to carry out research in appropriate manner. It is British supermarket
retailer which is now having over 525 stores across the UK and has been a part of Walmart Since
1999. Company has employed almost 160000 employees and also have a well-deserved
reputation for being the best and continuous growing firm in industry.

1.4 Research Project specification
Specification research project implies to the methods which have used by scholar
completion to analyse the importance of effective employee selection on business in retail sector
enterprise. It is also aims to attain high competitive skills and effectiveness for completion of
research project in appropriate manner (Smith, 2015) For accomplishment of aim and objectives
of research, it is also considered as effective for scholar to use an appropriate research
methodology. In relation to this, the specific research methodologies that will be used in present
study to carry out small scale research in retail industry is mentioned below:
Research Philosophy: It is considered as belief of scholar in the way through which the
data related the topic will be collected. Research philosophy has been classified in
various types such as positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism and realism. In this research,
scholar will use positivism research philosophy because it helps in analysing theories and
methods for collection of relevant information related to research (Bauer, 2014).
Research Design: It is the overall strategy which is applied by scholar for integration
research components in coherent and logical manner to ensure that research problems
will get accomplished (avin-baden and howell-major, 2013). It is mainly divided in to
two parts such as explanatory and descriptive. In this, descriptive research design will be
selected by scholar for completion of project. This allows the scholar to comprehend the
subject matter and eventually scholar will be able to answer the research questions in
appropriate manner.
Research strategy: It is important plan that by which the scholar will be able to answer
the research questions and address the problems in appropriate manner. Research
strategy has been classified within two categories such as qualitative and quantitative
strategy (Humphries, 2017). In this research, scholar will intend to use combination of
both strategies to analyse both primary and secondary data in appropriate manner.
Research Approach: This research approves are utilised for testing the important
assumptions and reliability of hypothesis. This research approaches have been classified
within two categories such as inductive and deductive research appropriate manner. In
this study, scholar will utilize the deductive research approach for analysing and testing
the validity of assumptions.

performance, company will be able to attain specific objectives for collection of data in
appropriate manner. High class selection of employees will enable scholar to attain different
participation and skills of employees at workplace
According to Bentley and et.al, (2012), performance appraisals of employees could be done by
manager for analysing of their effectiveness and past performance. It is considered as regular
review of employee’s job performance and the overall contribution toward organisation. In order
to analyse requirements, employees always measure effectiveness of its employees which helps
in organisation objectives.
Methods that are used by organization in employee selection
There are usually three methods of effective employee selection which are used by
organisation to attain potential talents at workplace as stated by Heizer, (2016).
General Mental ability: According to Arokiasamy, (2013), this approach is effective at
predicting the performance of employees in future in every type of job at all levels and in very
industry. It can be assessed by employees in variety of ways from 3 minutes’ paper and pencil
test like the wonderlic and other methods like online computer adaptive tests are also
organisation by organisation for selection of employees (Effective Employee Selection Methods,
2012). Through this, managers will be able to analyse the cognitive ability of employees which
is universally related to their performance across all jobs and appropriate levels from the
manufacturing to executive directing.
Structure interviews: BNS and HV, (2013) describes that behaviourally based interviews are
taken by manager in which applicants are asked a series of specific, predetermined, job related
questions through accomplishment of their responses are scored using detailed criteria. After
interview, employee rating is compared for determining their consistency or integrator reliability.
These will help the managers extremely at predicting individual's performance when it is applied
properly.
Situational judgemental test: Brinkmann (2014), Another important method which is used by
manager for effective employee selection which is commonly used by employers to measure the
ability of individual to deal with some specific situations at workplace. In this, applicants are
asked to select from alternatives to a variety of hypothetical situations which are relevant to the
target job. Through this, manager will analyse the areas of growth and development for newly
joined employees.

In this research, scholar aims to evaluate significance of effective employee selection for retail
sector enterprise. Positivism philosophy is based on fact that actual or relevant data can only be
collected through interview and observation. It is used quantitative research, because it helps to
get statistical data and information. Interpretivism philosophy is based on naturalistic view and
integrated human interest in to study. Scholar in this research has used interpretivism philosophy
because it helps in collection of quantitative data to achieve aims and objectives.
Research Design: The purpose of research design is to provide a plan of research that permits
accurate assessment of cause and effect relationships between independent and depended
variable. Research design has classified in two groups such as exploratory and descriptive.
Further, exploratory design does not aim to explore specific aspects of research area and used to

important of effective employee's selection on ASDA in retail sector.
Research Approach:
Research approaches are plans and procedure for study that span the steps from broad
assumptions and detailed method of data collection. Research approach is classified in two
categories such as qualitative and quantitative.
