Chapter 2: Literature Review
1.3 Critical review of key references
Methods to assess effectiveness of employee’s selection
According to Vasquez, (2014), employers in organisation will be able to analyse the
effectiveness of employees selected in the process for specific job by analysing its past
performance, skills and abilities to perform the job roles as well as responsibilities. In this
competitive era, employers focus on measuring skills and capabilities of employees at workplace
which enables them to perform job in appropriate manner. For managing employee's
6
Document Page
performance, company will be able to attain specific objectives for collection of data in
appropriate manner. High class selection of employees will enable scholar to attain different
participation and skills of employees at workplace
According to Bentley and et.al, (2012), performance appraisals of employees could be done by
manager for analysing of their effectiveness and past performance. It is considered as regular
review of employee’s job performance and the overall contribution toward organisation. In order
to analyse requirements, employees always measure effectiveness of its employees which helps
in organisation objectives.
Methods that are used by organization in employee selection
There are usually three methods of effective employee selection which are used by
organisation to attain potential talents at workplace as stated by Heizer, (2016).
General Mental ability: According to Arokiasamy, (2013), this approach is effective at
predicting the performance of employees in future in every type of job at all levels and in very
industry. It can be assessed by employees in variety of ways from 3 minutes’ paper and pencil
test like the wonderlic and other methods like online computer adaptive tests are also
organisation by organisation for selection of employees (Effective Employee Selection Methods,
2012). Through this, managers will be able to analyse the cognitive ability of employees which
is universally related to their performance across all jobs and appropriate levels from the
manufacturing to executive directing.
Structure interviews: BNS and HV, (2013) describes that behaviourally based interviews are
taken by manager in which applicants are asked a series of specific, predetermined, job related
questions through accomplishment of their responses are scored using detailed criteria. After
interview, employee rating is compared for determining their consistency or integrator reliability.
These will help the managers extremely at predicting individual's performance when it is applied
properly.
Situational judgemental test: Brinkmann (2014), Another important method which is used by
manager for effective employee selection which is commonly used by employers to measure the
ability of individual to deal with some specific situations at workplace. In this, applicants are
asked to select from alternatives to a variety of hypothetical situations which are relevant to the
target job. Through this, manager will analyse the areas of growth and development for newly
joined employees.
7
Document Page
Importance of having effective employee selection
According to Vaioleti, (2016), having good quality employees is the number one goal for every
employer. Selection of qualified employees enables manager to delegate responsibilities for
reducing the burden of work. Through development of job description and advertising in places
where they know manager will be able to attract people with appropriate set of skills in the first
step. It is also important identify what tasks manager needs employees to complete and whether
they capable of training them or not.
According to Brinkmann, (2014), Application of effective selection procedure and
method is important to raise competitive advantage of organisation against rivals. Potential
employees’ ca helps in growth of organisation in market. This also helps in establishing
confidence in knowing that manager have logically gone through a recruitment process and
selection of people based on predetermined matrix. All these benefits will have impact on
company's bottom line which illustrates how the essential the recruitment and selection process
is effective to an organisation's workforce and success of overall business. Recruitment and
selection of qualified employee directly influence the employee engagement as it helps in
determining behaviour and potential of employees through which they will get motivation at
workplace.
Chapter 3: Research Methodology

2.2 Proposed research investigation in accordance with agreed specification.
Research methodology consists of some specific strategies and techniques which are used
by scholar to accomplish the project in appropriate manner. These methods used to provide a
specific direct to research and achievement of relevant outcomes (Bauer, 2014). In this context,
scholar has utilized effective research methodologies to analyse the importance of effective
employee's selection in retail industry. Research has qualitative research by using various tools
and techniques for completion of research in appropriate manner.
Research Philosophy: It is the belief or the way in which data related to subject of research has
been collected, analysed and interpreted (Humphries, 2017). These research philosophies have
been classified in various categories such as Positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism and post
positivism.
In this research, scholar aims to evaluate significance of effective employee selection for retail
sector enterprise. Positivism philosophy is based on fact that actual or relevant data can only be
collected through interview and observation. It is used quantitative research, because it helps to
get statistical data and information. Interpretivism philosophy is based on naturalistic view and
integrated human interest in to study. Scholar in this research has used interpretivism philosophy
because it helps in collection of quantitative data to achieve aims and objectives.
Research Design: The purpose of research design is to provide a plan of research that permits
accurate assessment of cause and effect relationships between independent and depended
variable. Research design has classified in two groups such as exploratory and descriptive.
Further, exploratory design does not aim to explore specific aspects of research area and used to
accomplish quantitative research. As this study is qualitative in nature, descriptive research
design is used by scholar for completion of project because it is aimed at casting light on current
10

issues or problem through a process of data collection which enables researcher to determine the
important of effective employee's selection on ASDA in retail sector.
Research Approach:
Research approaches are plans and procedure for study that span the steps from broad
assumptions and detailed method of data collection. Research approach is classified in two
categories such as qualitative and quantitative.
In addition, quantitative is associated with positivist paradigm and involves collection as
well as conversion of data in to numerical form so that statistical calculation can be made and
conclusion drawn. In this research, qualitative approach is used by scholar because it is
associated with social constructivist approach that emphasize upon socially constructed nature of
reality. It helps in testing assumptions and hypothesis for completion of research on importance
of effective employee selection on organisation in retail sector.
Data collection: Data collection is termed as process used for gathering data and collection
through using different methods and approaches. Both primary and secondary method of data
collection is used by scholar in this research to analyse importance of effective employee
selection at ASDA in retail industry (Vaioleti, 2016). Questionnaire survey method is used for
data collection in primary method whereas books, journals and articles are used for secondary
research. Questionnaire is used as tool to collect primary data from selected respondents in
organisation.
Sampling: It is a specific principle utilized for selection of member of population to be
involved in study. Techniques of statistical sampling have been used to obtain samples taken
from larger population. Sampling techniques are classified in two categories such as
probabilistic and non-probabilistic. Sample of 15 employees of ASDA is taken by scholar
through simple random sampling method. This technique is purest and most straight forward
probability sampling strategy. In this selected because each member of population is equally
likely be selected as part of sample size. Logic behind selection of simple random sampling is
that it removes bias from the selection procedure and shows results in representative samples.
Data analysis:
In this, researcher analyse and interpret the data collected from different sources. There
are two method of data analysis such as qualitative and quantitative (Panneerselvam, 2014). In
quantitative research, SPSS tool is used for interpretation of data. As this research is qualitative

in nature, Thematic analysis method is used by scholar for analysis of data and develop charts,
graphs and diagrams. Interpretation of results is shown on the basis of data collected through
questionnaire survey from 15 employees.
Ethical consideration: In this, it is essential for scholar to consider the importance of ethics in
appropriate manner. In this, Secondary data collected by scholar is cited properly. Written
consent has taken from respondents and supervisor for collecting information. Data collected
from respondents will secure in appropriate and secured cloud systems.
