Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Possible Outline of research and specification
Background of the study
In this competitive business environment, highly qualified employees are required for
organisations in every industry who possess the capabilities to provide innovative for expansion
of business ( Karim, Huda and Khan, 2012). Employees are considered as important asset of
business enterprise because they play important roles in providing continuous growth and
success of organisation in industry (Jehanzeb, Rasheed and Rasheed, 2013). In present scenario,
Companies are providing their major focus on selection of appropriate method through which
they will be able to select qualified employees at workplace. In retail sector, employer also
require a team that they can count to get the work doen while they focus on other aspects. For
effective employee's selection, various methods are applied by manager through which they can
attract best and required talent for specific job position. It is considered as complex task that
needs to be performed by managers through appropriate planning and following the process in
order to achieve the desired potential employees at workplace.
In addition, there are various important functions are required to be accomplished by
employees at workplace which requires expertise and experience. For accomplishment of task
such as production, marketing, promotion, sales, operations and human resource's management,
there is major requirement of potential employees. However, implementation of effective process
will enable the enterprise to attain right person for specific job position at workplace. In present
scenario, researcher needs to carry out analysis on the significance of effective employee
selection on organisation in retail industry. For this, ASDA Stores Ltd. is taken in to
consideration by Scholar to carry out research in appropriate manner. It is British supermarket
retailer which is now having over 525 stores across the UK and has been a part of Walmart Since
1999. Company has employed almost 160000 employees and also have a well-deserved
reputation for being the best and continuous growing firm in industry.

To understand various method to assess effectiveness of employees’ selection in
accordance with retail sector enterprise.
To analyze the importance of having effective employee selection at Asda stores Ltd.
To analyses different methods that are used by organization in employee selection in
Asda stores Ltd. To recommend the strategies for improving the effectiveness of employees’ selection.
Project Scope:
The scope of this project is based on analysis of retail industry in wider context and
understand the effectiveness of process applied by manager in ASDA PLC for selection of
potential employees at workplace. Different methods and strategies will be applied to analyse
significance of effective employee selection in organisation.
Research questions
What is the effectiveness of employee selection in accordance with retail sector?
What is the role of employee selection in growth of ASDA in industry?
What is the important of effective employee selection at ASDA stores Ltd?
1.2 Factors contribute towards process research project selection
Various important factors are there which contributes towards the process of selection of
research process such as:
Availability of data: It is an important and essential factor that affects and increases motivation
of scholar towards selection of research topic on analysing the importance effective employee
selection on organisation in retail sector. In this subject area, the data will be easily available and
along with the same efforts for which the qualitative data has been selected and extracted by
scholar. Moreover, the topic will be interesting and relevant data and information about the
subject matter will be easily available.
Specific area of interest: Scholar also has specific interest in this area or topic. In thsis research
project, it is essential for carryout research in those area in which he has interest. As the
researcher, has specific area of interest in the related subject matter. Thus, the factors will
contribute towards selection of research project eventually.

1.4 Research Project specification
Specification research project implies to the methods which have used by scholar
completion to analyse the importance of effective employee selection on business in retail sector
enterprise. It is also aims to attain high competitive skills and effectiveness for completion of
research project in appropriate manner (Smith, 2015) For accomplishment of aim and objectives
of research, it is also considered as effective for scholar to use an appropriate research
methodology. In relation to this, the specific research methodologies that will be used in present
study to carry out small scale research in retail industry is mentioned below:
Research Philosophy: It is considered as belief of scholar in the way through which the
data related the topic will be collected. Research philosophy has been classified in
various types such as positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism and realism. In this research,
scholar will use positivism research philosophy because it helps in analysing theories and
methods for collection of relevant information related to research (Bauer, 2014).
Research Design: It is the overall strategy which is applied by scholar for integration
research components in coherent and logical manner to ensure that research problems
will get accomplished (avin-baden and howell-major, 2013). It is mainly divided in to
two parts such as explanatory and descriptive. In this, descriptive research design will be
selected by scholar for completion of project. This allows the scholar to comprehend the
subject matter and eventually scholar will be able to answer the research questions in
appropriate manner.
Research strategy: It is important plan that by which the scholar will be able to answer
the research questions and address the problems in appropriate manner. Research
strategy has been classified within two categories such as qualitative and quantitative
strategy (Humphries, 2017). In this research, scholar will intend to use combination of
both strategies to analyse both primary and secondary data in appropriate manner.
Research Approach: This research approves are utilised for testing the important
assumptions and reliability of hypothesis. This research approaches have been classified
within two categories such as inductive and deductive research appropriate manner. In
this study, scholar will utilize the deductive research approach for analysing and testing
the validity of assumptions.

Data collection: It is also considered as process of gathering data from different sources,
methods and approaches. Significantly, there are two important methods of data
collection such as primary and secondary method. For collection of data on importance of
effective employee selection in organisation is considered as important for collection in
appropriate manner.
Data analysis: Data collection is analysed as the process of gathering and collecting the
data through various important methods and the approaches for testing the validity of
assumptions.
