There are 4 significant main factors that affect work behavior, according to the textbook. Those 4
factors are job performance, organizational citizenship behavior, absenteeism, and turnover. (Bauer,
Carpenter, Erdogan.(2012). Management Principles. Retrieved from
https://my.uopeople.edu/pluginfile.php/292461/mod_resource/content/1/management-principles-
v1.1.pdf ). Job performance is defined as “the level to which an employee successfully fulfills the
factors included in the job description”. Organizational citizenship behavior is the “voluntary behavior
employees performs to help others and benefit the organization”. Absenteeism is defined as
“unscheduled absences from work”. Turnover is “an employee’s leaving an organization”.
Job performance is managed by taking inventory of general mental ability, stress levels, work
attitudes, and interpersonal relations (Bauer T. , Carpenter M. Erdogan B. (2012). Management
Principles) . The software company SAS manages their employees’ job performance by challenging
them in innovative ways to do their work. SAS provides work that allows their employees to be
creative and even establish ownership of their own ides while they are employed there. I agree with
this aspect because I think that when you allow your employees to be creative in their work, it makes
them feel more valued and reliable.
Organizational citizenship behaviors include establishing good working relationships with our
managers. SAS did a great job with managing this behavior by establishing a “no layoffs” policy when
the rest of the country was getting rid of employees. The company decided that their employees were
valuable , and came up with money-saving solutions that would allow them to keep all their
employees employed. I agree with this policy because it shows that the company finds their
employees valuable enough to not be replaced. When people feel that they are treated as a great
asset to a company, they perform in that way. This makes things run smooth for all involved.
Absenteeism deals with employees not coming to work when they are not satisfied with their work
life, or have trouble balancing their home-work schedule. SAS manages this problem by providing
flexible work schedules, in-house health care, and even gym facilities for employees to enjoy. This is
awesome, and definitely something I agree with , because it allows employees the convenience of
bringing some of their home life activities to work. It also can double as stress relievers that help keep
employees from calling in.
Turnover is based on employees’ performance levels at their job, as well as their attitudes toward the
company or position. High turnover rates can do pretty significant damage to companies, and cost
them a lot of money trying to lower the turnover rate and keep people employed to run the company
smoothly. Turnover seems to be the last thing SAS is worried about, with their turnover rate being a
shocking 4%, compared to the average 20% rate for many other companies. This is because of the
way SAS runs their company based on keeping their employees happy, feeling valued, and motivated

to create. Their policies, including accommodating work hours, no layoffs, free health care, and
regularly conducting satisfaction surveys, keep their employees loyal to the company. This is because
management is creating a welcoming, satisfying environment. I couldn’t agree more with their
methods of managing this issue. SAS proves with their policy and treatment of their employees that
everyone matters and plays a significant role in the success of the organization, whereas many
companies say that but hardly show it in their actions and policy.
