Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to plan and execute a shifting project for a family. The
relocation project is complex since the family need to vacate their current property, way in
advance. There are four members in the family, with two children. The family has a dog. For
relocation, a four bedroom flat is already rented in Perth. However, it is essential for the family
to vacate the property way before than they can move to the new house. Thus, the project plan is
prepared considering all the major aspects and constraints in the project. The variances and the
constraints in the project are considered in development of the project schedule. The report
discusses the project overview, the criteria and the assumptions, the list of tasks along with the
adjustments made. The project details are evaluated in the following paragraphs.
1. Overview of the Scenario
The project aims in shifting a family to Perth. The family consists of two adults, Jeff and
Kelly with their two children Lexie and Will. The family has a dog and two cars. Currently the
family is living in a two bedroom rental apartment in Maroochydore and will be moving to their
new house in Perth on 27th January 2019. The main problem behind this relocation is that the
family has to vacate their current property on 20th January 2019. The new job of Jeff starts on 5th
February 2019. In order to ensure that the entire relocation is smoothly completed including the
transfer of all the goods, the family has hired a packers and movers company that will help them
in moving all the goods including their car. After vacating the current property and prior to
moving to the new house, the family needs to stay in a hotel and for that the family needs to pre
book a hotel way in advance. This, is necessary since the family has no relative in Sunshine
Coast. Apart from that, the family needs to apply for admission of their kids to a school in Perth..

The relocation project has certain operational complexities and therefore, the budget set for the
project is $15,000. Kelly and Jeff needs to plan and manage the entire relocation project on their
own. A plan for relocation is developed considering the complexity and the budget constraints
associated with the project.
The family can move to their new house in 27th of January and therefore, a project plan is
developed accordingly. The school term in Perth commences from 31st January and for that Jeff
and Kelly needs to complete all the works on or before 30th January 2019. It is mandatory for Jeff
and Kelly to attend their children’s school and therefore, the entire shifting is completed before
31st January 2019.
The details about the exception and the assumptions associated with the project is
highlighted in the section below.
2. Criteria and Assumptions
Considering the information available and the key dates related to the project, a project
plan is prepared. The most significant criteria associated with the project are as follows.
1. The Time constraint is considered prior to the development of project plan.
2. The budget constrain is considered prior to the development of the project plan.
3. The family needs to complete the entire shifting project before 31st January since the
school at Perth Commences from January 31st.
4. The family needs to vacate their current property in 20th January 2019.
5. The family cannot move to the new house before the 27th January 2019.

The above discussed points indicates the major criteria associated with the project. The
project plan and work breakdown structure (WBS) is prepared for this shifting project
considering these significant criteria of the shifting process. The project is a high priority project
since the family will be relocating to a completely new location and therefore, no belongings or
any important documents should be left behind. In order to ensure a smooth relocation, the
family has taken help of Packers and Movers Company who will be helping the family to
transfer all the necessary belongings along with their cars to Perth. The entire transportation of
the goods and the shifting project will be supervised by Jeff and Kelly. The entire shifting is
considered as a project lead by Jeff and Kelly, in order to develop a milestone plan for the
project. The project is associated with two major milestones, which include completion of
packing and Completion of shifting.
The major assumptions related to the shifting project are as follows-
1. It is assumed that the task will be completed in the scheduled time. There will be no
delays in the completion of each scheduled task in the project.
2. It is assumed that the budget of $15,000 will be sufficient for the family to relocate to
the new location with all their belongings including their cars.
3. It is assumed that it is possible to relocate to a new location before 31st January.
4. It is assumed that new house is completely ready for the family to move in.
5. It is assumed that there will be no changes in the rate in which the workers will be paid
for the entire project work.

The above discussed points indicates the major assumptions related to the packing
process. Since the entire packing will be supervised by Jeff and Kelly, the possibility of any
errors in the relocation project is minimized. The project plan that is prepared should be followed
in order to ensure a successful relocation of the entire family. If the family is able to follow the
project plan in an efficient manner, it is possible to fulfil the most significant criteria of the
project. However, while preparing the project schedule, certain adjustments are made, which are
discussed in the later section of the report.
3. The Milestone Plan: The deliverables
As discussed earlier, the project is associated with two major milestones, which are
completion of the shifting preparation, that is, packing and completion of the shifting project.
Accordingly, a project plan is prepared that highlights the major tasks and deliverables of the
project along with the milestones of the project. The detailed work breakdown structure and the
milestone plan along with the deliverables of the project is discussed in the appendix section
(refer to appendix 1).
4. Task List and the Resources
The tasks related to the project indicates the necessary tasks or works that are needed to
be completed in order to ensure successful project completion. Since the complexity of the
project is quite high, it was essential to complete all the vital tasks that are associated with the
relocation project. The project plan indicates all the major tasks related to the project (refer to
appendix 2).
5. Gantt chart and Task Flow

Along with the project plan, a schedule Gantt chart is prepared for the project that gives
an idea of the scheduling and the duration of each of the tasks associated with the project. The
task flow is indicated in the Gantt chart along with the indication of the critical tasks associated
with the project (refer to appendix 3).
6. Details of the Adjustments
It is assumed that the project has started on 19th December 2018. The project that that is
prepared indicates that the project followed a sequential structure. The scheduling of the shifting
project are adjusted as per the project criteria, that include, vacating the old house on 20th and
moving to the new house on 27th. The tasks are scheduled in such a way that the entire project is
completed before 30th January so that the children face no problem in attending their school on
31st January.
7. Reflection
The scheduling complexity of this project was quite high that helped me to understand
the different aspects of project scheduling and the need of planning a project prior to its
implementation. I have planned and schedule the project related to shifting to a new house as per
the requirements and the criteria of the project. There were certain constrains in the project, such
as the budget, the time and the dates on which the old property was needed be vacated and
movement to the new property. The entire project had been a good learning experience for me as
it has helped me to understand the basic of project management and decision making.

The report discusses a case scenario of shifting a family to a new location. The family
will be moving to a new house along with their belongings. The major criteria and the
assumptions associated with the project is discussed in the report. The report gives an overview
of the importance and need of project planning and scheduling. The project plan that is prepared,
if followed without any deviation will ensure successful relocation of the family to Perth. The
project plan is prepared in such a manner that the children will not miss their school while Jeff
will have enough time in hand to join to the new office.
