Are young people spending too much time online?
Abstract
The problem analysis is based on an analysis of how young people are spending too
much time online. The analysis provides an analysis of the current situation of the youths on time
spent online. Some of the challenges regarding the same are discussed and the possible solutions.
The proposal of what should be done is as well provided in the problem analysis.
Introduction
Nowadays, young people spend too much time online. This is due to the influence of
modern technology. Having fast development of technology, young people are exposed to so
many online influentials. Griffiths (2010, p.413) states that 60% of the youths spend their time
on online related technology. The easy accessibility of the internet and internet access devices
has brought close the large percentage of young people online.
Present situation
The question of whether young people are spending too much time online is true. As
discussed in the introduction section, large percentage of young people spent much of their time
online. There different online platforms where these young people get connected. One of the
addictive online platforms where many young people spent a lot of time is facebook, WhatsApp,
Instagram, online games, Twitter and other internet sites. Taking Facebook as an example, 75%
of Facebook users are young people (Sullivan 2012, p.129). It has been found that young people
spend almost all their time browsing on online social media. Besides, WhatsApp has become the
other most addictive online platform where young people are much addicted. It has been found
that almost all young people with smartphones have access to the WhatsApp channel of

communication. This has become the most addictive messaging and communication channel of
young people. They form the WhatsApp and Facebook groups where they can exchange their
daily chats. The research by DeAngelis (2010, p.130) has shown that young people chat in
WhatsApp for almost 24 hrs.
Problem
The major problem is addition to online matters at the expense of other important things.
Through the research, it has been found that many young people waste a lot of time on online
matters. Grohol (2019, p.395) argues that comparing with the performance in the academic field
in the past and nowadays, it is clear that the performance of young people has declined because
they spent much of their time online instead of studying. According to Harris (2018, p.481), the
moral values of young people have declined simply because through online addition, young
people have engaged in bad online platforms like porn pages. This has eroded the moral behavior
of young people in many parts of the world. Moreover, addiction to online and internet
associated pages has increased the rate of crime in young people. This is influenced by online
gaming and online-based movies watched by young people on their mobile phones and smart
Televisions (Grau 2015, p.148). The violence and crime issues in many parts of the world have
increased simply because many young people are far much addicted and influenced by online
gaming fights (Peng and Liu 2010, p.320). Young people practice the fighting and violence
actions seen in the movies in their daily life situation. This is causing a lot of the dramatic and
chaotic environment to live within our societies.
