To improve skills with respect to the maintenance of patient
centred, therapeutic and professional communication and
relationships with the patient as well as with inter-professional
team during dissemination of collaborative care, within the next
6 to 12 months.
The above individual goal has been designed with respect to improving
functional capabilities associated with implementation of activities
encountered during the WPE replacement such as: engaging in
interpersonal communications with the patient, interacting with the
multidisciplinary care team as well as procuring comprehensive,
multifaceted information during patient assessments.
Which of the NMBA RN Standard for Practice does this learning
goal relate to?
The above mentioned individual learning goal can be related to the
Standards 2 of the professional practice standards enlisted by the
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA, 2016). Additionally, the
above mentioned individual learning goals can be related well with
Standard 2 of the Behavioural Cues established by the Australian
Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT, 2016).
Rationale to why this is important for my practice as a nurse
(Consider the ANSAT behavioural cues in relating your learning goal to the RN Standard for Practice)
Achieving this individual learning goal is important for improvements in
nursing professional practice for the following reasons (Kondo,
Tomizawa, Jibu & Kamide, 2020; Bachnick, Ausserhofer, Baernholdt,
Simon & Match RN study group, 2018):
Engaging in skills of patient centred practice comprising of directly
encouraging the patient to participate in the decision-making
process results in timely identification of patient preferences as
well as improves sense of satisfaction and care plan compliance
across the patient.
Engaging in skills of patient centred, interpersonal communication
skills with the patient comprising of empathy and active listening
results in improved patient satisfaction where the patient feels
that his or her needs are being respected and considered.
Engaging in improved skills of maintaining therapeutic and
professional relationships with the multidisciplinary team paves
the way for timely identification and comprehensive mitigation of
patient centred healthcare issues and needs.
Engaging in improved skills of interpersonal, patient centred

communication with respect to maintenance of patient autonomy,
patient privacy and patient confidentiality results in improve
patient compliance and positive feedback in the form the patient
perceptions that he or she is being treated with dignity and
respect.
Engaging in improving skills pertaining to maintenance of
professional intimacy and professional boundaries assists nurses
in abstaining from engaging in activities beyond the scope of
ethical and professional nursing practice.
Strategies to achieve this goal

Participating in workshops, conferences or part-time courses
teaching communication skills while simultaneous engaging in the
WPE placement will be useful for improving skills of interpersonal
communication, empathy and active listening.
Integrating daily implementation of patient centred
communication skills with comprehensive, standardized handover
tools (such as ISBAR: Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment
and Recommendation) will assist in improving implementation of
patient centred communication skills with patients as well as the
interdisciplinary team.
Referring to professional standards such as the NMBA professional
practice standards as well as the ANSAT Behavioural Cues during
daily professional WPE practice will assist in improved
implementation of professional and ethical therapeutic nursing
skills.
Engaging in timely feedback from supervisors as well as via
personal reflection within the WPE environment will assist in
identification of scope of improvement and enhanced nursing
skills of therapeutic and professional practice (Powers, Morris,
Flynn & Perry, 2019; ANSAT, 2016; NMBA, 2016; Jun & Oh, 2017.

To improve skills with respect to deliverance of culturally
competent and culturally sensitive nursing practice during
engaging in interpersonal communication and therapeutic
relationships with patients belonging to ethnically,
linguistically, spiritually and culturally diverse communities and
groups, within the next 6 to 12 months.
The above individual learning goal has been developed with respect to
improving nursing skills in professional practice within the WPE
environment, during the performance of activities such as the
formulation of care plans, comprehensive assessments and engaging in
therapeutic relationships with patients belonging to ethnic and cultural
minority groups.
