Social care and family support
Critical appraisal by applying theory and best practice principles
In the case study, the children whose name is Megan and Sam appears to be
physically abused by his father and this has started after the demise of his mother. The father
and the maternal grandmother is the current guardian of the children who thinks that the
children Sam and Megan Is abused by their father, in her dead daughter’s in law’s house. The
guardian who has approached the social work team in the case study, is the grandmother of
the children who thinks that the various aspects of the parent care that should be received by
the children – Sam (17 years) and Megan (14 years) is not up to the mark and on the other
hand, very adversely though – they are being physical abused by their father who seems to be
disturbed after the death of his wife and that the various aspects of the care that he needs to
show and exhibit the same to the children, is completely missing and instead he is being
violent to the children, both physically and mentally, which according to the grandmother –
who is the guardian who has launched the complain – refers to as being abusive and
indifferent to the affections and emotions of the children as well (Chew et al. 2019).
According to the grandmother, she has seen and observed marks on the body of her
granddaughter and she also suspects that Sam, her grandson has also been beaten up by his
abusive father and they are in state of shock and mental trauma as received by the demise of
her mother and the violent aggressive behaviour demonstrated by his father and in both the
situations it is critical, that the children are protected well and in her view, she thinks that the
children Sam and Megan is ill-treated by her father who shouts and beat them up, that means
he is both verbally and also physically abusive to them, thus helping the idea that the
children, who are her grandson and granddaughter is safe and secure with them. It is
important to know and understand that the grandmother has a protective mind-set for her
grandchildren which is quite normal and that the various conditions that are required to
maintain the comfort, dignity and esteem as well as wellbeing, physical health and mental
health of the grandchildren is to be found at her home where they are safe and se-cure and in
her view, her granddaughter and grandson can only live in their father’s house with their
father, if he starts to behave well and good with them and maintain a good behavioural and
psychologically and physically safe and secure environment in his house, around the children
(Ibrahim 2019). The strength is that the grand-mother shows strong communication skills and
strong guardianship skills towards the wellbeing and health of the children which is a strong
assets under the circumstances. The views of the parent regarding the going to school or
training and the attitude towards school and learning is that the grandmother is expressing her

interest to bringing up and take care of the children at her home as she feels that they are not
safe at their father’s home under any circumstances (Morrongiello 2018). As the children are
traumatized – the grandmother shows interest to rebuild their esteem, confidence and social
interactions through more social as a well as correct building of interpersonal relationships
The grandmother herself is confident and she trusts herself that she can take good care of the
children as well as that of their social and personal development at her home – which is a
strength. The strength of the person is that she can ensure safety and supportive family
environment, safety from their father’s bullying and violence and being talked to when the
children as actually upset and these are the actual areas where the grandmother thinks she can
manage and deliver the same services to her grandson and granddaughter and this is a
strength in the situation. She has her own house and resource to safeguard the needs of the
children.
While the grandmother is worried about the health of the children and is focussed to
build on the physical and the psychological aspects of the children, providing them with
safety, the children keeps quiet about the trauma being done to them and only reiterates that
the father is upset since the expiry of their mother and it is only the elder brother who speaks
up accounting for his condition and her sister’s condition as well. It is critical that the various
reasons that has led to the causation of events and behavioural change of their father leading
to violent aggression is attributed to the death of their mother and this can be seen as strength
for the fact that they still in a position to understand their father being upset and this
emotional resilience can be seen as a strength and as Sam said that they can take care of
themselves, this is he him-self and his sister, is another strength and can be used to full effect
by the social worker to develop and progress the lives of the children. The children – Sam
and Megan are in an adolescent ages and as both of them are teens, it means their social skills
and learning skills are more developed than that of the children who are not yet adolescents
or less than their age and this is a strength in the scenario that the children have already
grown to a teen stage where they can take care of their own selves as well and this
characteristic strength would add to their sense of development and learning with respect to
going to school or training, attitude towards school and learning, Learning and developing as
well (Barat, Watson and Mulvaney 2018).
According to grandmother, the various types of the children are esteem, dignity,
safety and security of the children and that the various types of the physical health and mental

health needs are also very significant and prominent as the very aspects of the bruising and
mental trauma left by the recent actions of her son in-law has impacted their adolescent
quality of life in a great manner. According to the grandmother of the children, the needs are
going to school or training, attitude towards school and learning, learning and developing.
Similarly, they are grown up and are adolescents and the reason that Sam is elder to Megan
has an added advantage in the situation that it affects the situation in a positive manner as
other than her grandmother, he can take care of her sister as well (Wilkie et al. 2018).
As they have shifting identity and shifting self-image needs during the adolescent
phases, the needs of the children are dignity and sense of protection and security that they
must have at their parent’s home and the sense of belongingness and as well as feelings of
protection in their home and it is important the needs are met properly. According to the
children themselves, getting on with others, Aids and barriers to getting on with others in
addition to Confidence and responsibility are the main areas that to be addressed in an
imperative manner. It is to be understood that the guardian of the children that is their father
is very irresponsible as a father and has demonstrated feelings of violence and aggression
towards the children and this is where, their trust and faith as well as belief towards
relationships is lacking and which has a made a big difference towards their self-confidence
and these are needs of the children, from their point of view and perspective, that are needed
to be addressed in a very imperative manner (Senthilkumaran et al. 2019).
The interventions that are mentioned above such as developing a safe home
environment, family support enhancement and strengthening of family resilience by
incorporating the positive coping mechanisms are the major interventions. The various
aspects of the care process that are to be applied from a social perspective, by the social
workers, must focus on strengthening the socioeconomic aspect of the family so that the
children are bought up in a proper manner. The differences between the father and the
children must be reconciled by counselling, legislative compliance and motivational
interviewing. In these situations, it is to be understood that the various types of the
implications in pertinence to bettering the coping skills of the person – has to be bettered in
collaboration with a psychotherapists and the trauma care workers as well. The sociological
interventions as in family therapy, motivational interviewing of the father and providing
trauma care services to the children is effective. The grandmother of the children is an
important aspect of the social system and it is critical that the various aspects of the

interventions that are already elucidated are planned keeping her in the context. The
relationship between the grandmother and the father of the children has to be bettered and a
consensus must be to reach as to who should take custody of the children and the legal as
well as the administrative parameters that are available in the society must be used to heal the
bonds and help the progress of life in a better manner.
