INTRODUCTIONOccupational illness and injury is a condition or injury which is caused by exposure inworkplace to chemical, physical or biological agents and due to which normal physical andpsychological mechanism of an individual get affected and health of a worker is affected (Green& et.al., 2019). This essay will mainly focus on determinants of work related injury or healthrisk, factors that mainly impact's worker's health and capabilities of being employed. This essaywill also focus on critical analysis of occupational health issue and injury, initiatives taken toimprove and address workplace injury and illness. Addition to this, this essay will also explorehistorical, political, economic and social determinants of health that will either affect or improveoccupational injury or illness.LITERATURE REVIEW Occupational injury and illness as public health issues According to Rappin, Wuellner & Bonauto, (2016) occupational injuries are known asthe physical impairment or the psychological harm caused to an individual due to workingenvironment or the condition. The work related accidents can even make individuals disabled forentire life. Thus, it is very essential that the issue must be addressed and considered as publichealth issues. Employment is one of the basic necessity for the survival and thus for everyoccupation associated illness or injuries must be taken into account so that communities can beprevented from the life long damage to their health. As per the view of Weaver & et.al., (2015)occupational injuries can results from occupational hazards, manual handling or heavyequipments, inadequate safety training and poor ergonomics. Since employment and jobs areintegral part of the society, work safety not only affects the employees but also has significantand life long impact on the families of employees, society as well as communities living in thearea near work site. Significance of the issue Tadesse & Israel, (2016) stated that occupational illness can make individuals highlyvulnerable to chronic diseases. The unfavourable work condition and lack of adequate safetyapproaches not only causes accidents which can harm physical functionalities but can also affectthe functionality of organs. However, the issue is not considered seriously by the employers inorder to avoid additional cost in management of such programs. On the other hand the lack ofawareness among employees and communities makes them vulnerable to occupational injuries.1

Thus, there is need that suitable community initiatives must be adopted and implemented so thatoccupational injuries can be eliminated and safe and healthy work environment can be providedto individuals. The safe work practices are fundamental right of individuals and thus this healthissue must be given priority so that suitable interventions can be used. (Source: Lane, Collie and Hassani-Mahmooei, 2016)Causes of occupational injury and illnessAccording to Gray & Collie, (2017) It is important to focus on an individual's work lifeas it can directly impact an individual's health in various ways. Workplace injury or illness canbe caused due the improper working environment or can also be caused due to non workingenvironment as well. Non work related causes can be: inadequate amount of sleep, excessiveamount of work and many more. Work related causes can be lack of knowledge of equipmentsi.e. how to use an equipment, what are the safety conditions that should be kept in mind by theworkers, how many hours workers should work continuously and many more.
