How can social media transform nursing practice?

Students are invited to construct a thesis essay related to an issue of importance in current media or literature. The essay is designed to engage students in a research process that investigates a current issue from media that is relevant to cultural competency in Canadian nursing practice and of interest to the student. In week 3 students are expected to participate in a pair and share activity where students have their thesis statement reviewed by two peers. Students will write a four-page thesis paper related to cultural competency as a focused extension to a topic of interest identified from within current media (see examples in the assignment details) or literature. The term paper will articulate why the selected topic is an issue for nursing that is relevant to cultural competency.

Social media is playing a crucial role in creating awareness between various people,
society and nations regarding ethical as well as unethical content. In fact, it is a tool that is
designed to link people from different regions. With the help of this, people can share their ideas,
views, and products in front of the entire nation. However, in recent times it has been seen
certain issues that also arise because of social media which has shaped negative impacts on the
mind of several people. A sensationalism problem is nowadays creating primary concern for the
society because it is a type of editorial techniques in mass media (Ross and Myers, (2017). There
is a tendency of the press to play up and dwell on a specific story that is more sensational such as
domestic violence, kidnappings, and workplace hazards in nursing practices and so on. A recent
news story by nursing times reported that nursing staff on a stoke-on-tent pilot mission were
using Facebook in order to encourage breast screening services. Henceforth, this essay throws
highlight on these issues that is related to the culture.
B. Articulating the issue
According to the survey report, the current 45 million social media users are currently
using different sources of media to collect specific information. However, on average, everyday
users tend to spend 1 hour and 50minutes scrolling by social media sites. Out of different
sources, Facebook remains the leading player with 87% of all internet users registered with the
platform. Whereas social media has come into account as a good deal of criticism over the past
few years for their supposed negative impact on society, there is no doubt it can also be an

Argument:
Because of the increasing popularity of social media platforms, it has provided positive
mode to explore different issues that are faced by a nurse in recent times. The government should
ban unethical content that can create a negative impact on society or regarding nursing practices.
Statement: Community nurse and the use of social media
According to Peate, (2013), the role of community nurse has continuously changed in a
wide number of manners over the last couple of years. Moreover, social media could never
replace that special role yet it could assist the nurse to deliver effective care to the people. They
can handle critical issues more effectively in order to protect the life of people. Thus, it is
important to motive their efforts by using social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
Argument:
Because of digital transformation, nurses are much more aware of using advanced
technology that can help them to secure their lives. It offers the best alternative in which they can
easily share the knowledge that can keep up to date on a regular basis.
Statement: The promotion of professionalism in nursing practice in regard to social media
In the viewpoint of Westrick, (2016), misuse of the digital platform could lead to serious
consequences and impact for the nurses. It is basically related to the breaches of patient identity

and releasing private information in the public. It has been analyzed that issues are generally
coming from ineffective communication between one another.
Argument:
Because of social media, the nursing guideline provides an effective foundation that will
assist in promoting e-professionalism in nursing practices. There are certain laws that are
imposed on an unethical person who intends to misuse the media to affect the lives of others.
D. Conclusion
From the above thesis statements, it has been articulated that social media is providing a
valuable source to convey important messages that can further assist in developing society as
well as the nation. The above statements are equally helpful in generating more positive
responses that can assist in changing the perception of people towards effective nursing
practices. Therefore, it is suggested that to promote positive ideas and reviews with respect to the
use of social media so that the chances of privacy could be maintained for a longer period.
