1.1 Summary
The author Samantha Friedman and Daniel T Litcher, in their paper spatial
Income inequality and child maltreatment in the United – States of America, discuss
how the economic state of poverty in America is leading to debate. Although the poverty rate
has decreased to a certain level in comparison to the 1980s, the number of needy Individuals
has vastly increased, which is around 37 million. Children in America result in thirty-six per
cent of the poor population. Since the era of 1990 poverty rate has been claiming an upward
shift denoting a rise in the number of poor people. In the section, discussing the economic
opportunity and child poverty, the author, focuses on the local market wage structure is
affecting the average stability of the US citizen. The lifestyle of US citizens is depleting such
that with low marriage rate, non-martial fertility has increased over time children's defence
fund 1991. The methods of data collection carried from US Bureau of the census 1991; the
dependent variable is the proportion of children whose age is about seventeen or younger,
whose family income lies below the poverty line in 1989. Multivariate analysis carried out
which include the portion from Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic. This paper intends to
discuss the causes of poverty as proposed by Tickamyer 1998, the percentage of citizen
employed in mining and agricultural activities did not pay with a satisfactory wage structure.
2.1 Response to the Article
I think if the non-metro areas of the US if given attention and if the government
undertakes development activities, then the poverty level decrease to an extreme level.
Economically stating child labour, observed in areas such as a Black belt, Appalachia and
Mississippi Delta. The fact that a single mother works to operate a family is also ignoring in
the current alarming debate. If the non-metro areas of US provided with the well-paid
structured and stable job, then the situation of poverty will be eradicated. Besides, the number

of Immigrants is also increasing in America which do not even have a better opportunity to
survive in the region. However, as per my opinion, various data census has provided the
impact of poverty on society. Governmental schemes are to introduced to focus on the
necessity of minority peoples; new job opportunities should be brought by identifying the
work or job required in that specific area, free education should serve to the one who is
unable to carry out scholarship because of financial capability. Non-metro residents to be
provided with basic needs by the government. Further, non-metro citizens should be mix with
metro citizens so that they can have a better idea of each other and learn a new perspective.
America is a developed country known in the whole economy; it lacks little development
opportunities. Special attention to be given on the child as their quality of childhood will
decide their future, which will directly impact the American society.
