Chapter One: Introduction
Employee motivation is referred as the efforts put by an organisation to motivate, encourage,
satisfying and retaining staff members at marketplace. In addition to this, employee motivation
direct leads to higher performance and productivity within an organisation which further help in
attaining objectives timely and effectively (Kim, Kim and Han, 2019). It is significant for
companies to focus on motivating its employees as engaged staff members is committed to
organisation and put their full potential to meet with the targets. There are various types of
motivation techniques adopted by organisations with an objective to gain growth and success.
For the present study, Marks and Spencer is chosen as a base company. It is a multinational
organisation that is headquarter in UK and founded in year 1884. It offer products such as home
products, clothing, food products and many more. The company has around 1500 stores globally
that state the company has high market growth. The objective of report is to analyse the influence
of employee motivation schemes in retention and satisfaction of staff members.
1.1 Research Aim
“To determine impact of staff motivation schemes to employee retention”. A case study on
Marks and Spencer.
Rationale for the research
The reason behind conducting this study is to gain information about the influence of staff
motivation schemes in retaining employees at workplace. Along with this, it will also help to
know about various forms of motivation schemes used by companies for retention of staff
members. Moreover, the ways through which staff members of Marks and Spencer is motivated.
Apart from this, it assist research worker in both professional as well as personal context. If it is
talking about professional, it help to know about company strategies to retain and motivate
employees. On the other hand, it assist to improve skills such as time management, research
skills, data analysis, data interpretation, communication etc. Furthermore, it will also aid in
conducting future studies in more effective and proper manner.

1.3 Research Objectives
To identify importance of employee motivation in an organization for employee
retention.
To determine different types of motivation schemes that can be applied by Marks and
Spencer.
To provide some recommendations to managers of Marks and Spencer to motivate
employees.
1.4 Significance of the Research
Employees plays an important role at workplace and to motivate them is significant for a
company in order to maintain performance as well as productivity in an effective manner. Along
with this, staff motivation help a company to execute all the activities and operations in a timely
and appropriate way (García-Rodríguez, Dorta-Afonso and González-de-la-Rosa, 2020). The
present study will also help researcher to know about motivation schemes used by chosen
company and to give recommendations to organization for employee motivation which will
further enhance performance, brand image, productivity of an organization.
Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1 Introduction of Literature Review
It is essentially a simple summary of the sources that usually include view point of
different authors on a specific topic. In addition to this, it is a collection of published materials
and information on the specific topic which further help investigator to draw valid as well as
reliable conclusion. The main motive of this part is to analyze gap of an investigation from the
previous studies (Feng, and Wang, 2019). In the previous studies, there is information regarding
employee motivation and the strategies used by company to motivate staff members but it lack
data regarding the effect of motivational schemes on employee holding and contentment. In
order to fulfill this gap, some of the research questions has formulated and is given below:

Importance of employee motivation in an organization for employee retention
According to Juneja, (2021) Employee motivation is one of the significant aspect that plays
an important role satisfaction as well as retention of staff members. It is analyzed that motivation
act as a catalyst for an organizational growth and success as motivated employee put their full
potential in achieving and meeting with targets timely. It is important for leaders and managers
of company to continuously encourage employees in order to extract out their best at workplace.
In addition to this, it is determined that motivated employee ensure timely and effective
implementation of activities that has positive effect on the whole performance of company (Role
of motivation in employee keeping, 2021). Apart from employee retention, there are other
benefits to the company due to employee motivation such as maintenance of positive working
environment, timely implementation of activities, effective planning, achievement of objectives
timely, enhancement of brand image, attainment of competitive edge over rivals and many more.
All such benefits ensure an organization to gain higher success as well as growth in market as
compare to its rivals.
Different types of motivation schemes that can be applied by Marks and Spencer.
As per the view point of Thangjam (2021), it is implied that motivational schemes are
basically an organizational efforts to satisfy the needs of the members and boost up their morale.
For this, there are several types of schemes of motivation applied by respective company. One of
the strategy is ensuring input is equals to output which means that company is providing salary
and incentives to employees as per the efforts they put at workplace. This help a company in
maintaining optimistic attitude at workplace which further leads to increase in efficiency of staff
members (Motivational strategies, 2021). Another motivational strategy is providing rewards
and recognition to workforce on their good performance. The respective organization can
provide both monetary and non-monetary rewards to its employees such as bonus, holiday
packages, compensation, insurance and so on. Participation of employees in decision making is
also undertaken as a motivational technique that can also be applied by companies. It help in
bringing out creativity and new ideas from the side of employees which further aid to attain
competitive edge within the market. Besides this, there can also be other motivation schemes for
example training and development, employee safety, performance assessment, performance
appraisal and so on.

Recommendations to managers of Marks and Spencer to motivate employees.
According to SUSAN, (2021), It is determined that it is essential for companies to adopt
impressive strategies to influence and encourage its staff members. One of the recommended
strategy is “Be transparent” as it is important for organization to communicate all the process,
activities and strategies to employees in a proper and effective manner. In addition to this, it can
also provide chance to employees to provide feedback and ask question as it brings transparency
between employee and employer as well (How managers motivate their employees, 2021).
Another strategy that can be suggested is “Prioritize work life balance” as it help employee to
maintain their both personal and professional working without any issue. A culture which give
preference to work-life balance yields positive working environment and increased productivity
also. “Create recognition rituals” can also be an effective motivational strategy that help
company to encourage staff members. Apart from this, there are also other strategies which can
be recommended to higher authorities of respective organization to motivate staff members such
as effective communication, supportive manager and many more.
2.3 Conclusion of Literature Review
Consequentially, through literature review employee motivation is one of the most
significant aspect for an organisation to boost up its success and growth. Along with this, it is
determine that the various forms of motivation schemes used by company are rewards and
recognition, appraisals, allow employee involvement in decision making, training and
development and various others (Albastaki, Al-Alawi and Albassam, 2019). Moreover, it is
analysed that motivation schemes help respective organisation to gain benefits such as
improvement in brand image, attainment of competitive advantage, increase in performance,
employee retention and many more.
Chapter Three: Methodology
It is one of the important chapter of a study that includes a specific process as well as
techniques used to identify, choose and analyze data regarding a topic. Along with this, it include
all the research tool used within the study along with the justification that further leads to
attainment of valid and reliable outcome. In simple words, it is referred as an effective pattern for
developing the process and activity for gathering reliable and accurate data for research. In order
