Summary and Purpose of AssessmentThis assessment is made up of the following:
Assessment Task 1: Develop a sustainability policy – Completing this assessment
will allow you to demonstrate your ability to develop a sustainability policy
recommendation to senior management for one new idea.
Assessment Task 2: Develop a risk management plan – Completing the plan will
allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to develop a risk management
plan which includes the context, risk situation, proposed actions, stakeholders,
responsible persons, resources, outcomes, and support. This task asks you to
demonstrate your knowledge of Codes of Practice, environmental legislation,
environmental policy, an environmental management system, of international
standards, risk legislation, risk management policy, and risk assessment.
All three parts of this assessment task need to be completed satisfactorily, for you to
be deemed competent for these units.

Assessment Task 1: Develop a sustainability policy
What
You will develop a Sustainability Policy for an organisation of your choice, with the
aim of reducing the level of toxic materials and hazardous chemicals used. Your
facilitator will provide a list of possible businesses to choose from.

This assessment task involves you answering a series of questions related to this topic.
Write full sentence descriptions except where you determine information can be
conveyed more clearly using dot points, tables, graphs or diagrams.

You will be assessed against the criteria listed in the marking guide in Section B of this
task. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.

1. Situation.
a. Describe the
organisation’s current
situation
Stingray is a Melbourne based technology company
which has 1,200 people working for them. It was
established in the year of 2001 and they sell their
products through several self-branded stores, retail
and electronic outlets and online business portal.
The company aims to operate in the most
sustainable manner but the manufacturing of
technological devices requires many components
which are harmful to both humans and the
environment.
b. Describe the desired
situation.
Stingray aims to manufacture products that are not
just user-friendly, but also planet friendly, whilst
meeting the organisation’s production and
budgetary requirements. Stingray’s desire to
become a green company and reducing their

carbon footprint makes it necessary to seek
alternative materials that are less damaging to the
environment (iisd.org, 2015).
c. What is the applicable
industry Code of Practice
and how does it apply?
The industry applicable of code of practice can
include codes of business operations practices.
According to the current scenario of the
organisation, it is to develop a policies regarding
choosing the raw materials and producing toxic
free elements. The code of practice in the
organisation will be in alignment with the need of
developing manufacturing operations and health
and safety of employees. Practicing anything odd
or by breaching legal laws can lead to termination
of the employment services and legal steps taken
against the employees being caught of guilt.
Hence, the practice of code of practice policies will
align with the Australian legal system as well as
aim to meet environment requirement.
d. What is the applicable
legislation and how does it
apply?
The Australian federal and state laws mention
about two laws of CCA and CBS (business.gov.au,
2019).
The CCA refers to Competition and Consumer Act
2010. The act was introduced to the parliament in
2010 that was known as Trade Practices Act 1974
previously. The act tries to promote fair competition
and services for consumers by protecting the
legislative vehicle. The business act related to
Consumer and Business Services (CBS) is Australian
Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012. The
purpose of the act is to prevent the risk of breaking
laws and confronting legal expenses. It enhances
customer relations and fair business policies.

reducing the level of toxic
materials and hazardous
chemicals used in the
organisation.
a. Describe your
recommendation
The policy to be developed will address the concern
of the company in reduce creating harmful
industrial impacts and develop corporate social
responsibility of the company. Hence, the
operations of the industry has to align with using
toxic free materials and chemicals that can
adversely impact the environment.
The policy of non-usability of toxic and hazardous
chemical are to be treated. The purpose of the
policy will enforcing avoidance to use of toxic
materials and hazardous chemicals and opting for

environment safe raw materials or substitutes.
The policy will be considering ISO 14001:2015
standards for fostering environmental management
systems that can enhance the organisations
performance towards environment protection.
b. Describe how this will
close the gaps between the
current and desired
situation.
In the current scenario, the company is utilizing
toxic material to manufacture desktops, laptop
screen and mobile phones. Here with the new
policy we aim to replace the PVC and bromine
material with recycled plastic material. Hence we
decrease the use of toxic chemical and follow
precautionary principle. We would continue to be
the company with social responsiveness Stingray’s
desire to become a green company and reducing
their carbon footprint makes it necessary to seek
alternative materials that are less damaging to the
environment (Finch, 2015).
c. Recommend procedures
that will ensure the
planned improvement is
sponsored and supported.
There is a simple process to be followed
(GREENTUMBLE, 2018)
1 Developing: There is a need of developing the
planned improvement referring to
implementation of a changed policy.
2. Communicating: Making the stakeholders
aware of the changes and policies amended is an
important gesture that allows hooking out the
flaws and disruptions.
3. Monitoring: Regular invigilation and correlating
the impacts of implementation helps to figure out
the differences and making further
improvements.
4. Re-evaluating: The extracted facts and figures
are re-evaluated and interpreted accordingly.
5. Processing the amendments: The final
execution of the re-evaluated and amended
policies are taken in consideration.
6. Importing the impact: The final reviewed
implementation is analysed in order to define the
impact.
d. Who would need to
approve the policy?
The recommended sustainable policy will be
discussed with top management. Top management
will make necessary changes in the proposal and
circulate amongst the employees. Hence the top
management need to approve the policy
(Cernansky, 2016).

the atmosphere. Furthermore the suggested policy
will decrease the use of Bromine and PVC which is
hazardous for human health. It has deeply
engraved the socially responsible culture within the
company. It enables company to optimize each
phase of products’ lifecycles. Starting from
collecting materials till using the recycled material
to create end product (dell.com, 2017).
f. Discuss how you will
communicate the new
policy to various
stakeholders.
The communication with the stakeholders take
place in different forms of channels as through
digital, verbal or written papers. In order to
communicate the newly formed or amended
policies, the company needs to focus on delivering
the message to stakeholders through emails and
then through conducting meetings and facilitating
them to throw honest reviews.
Exhibiting the basic understanding of the
working domain
Applying the correct form of approaching the
stakeholders
Leveraging the team mates is necessary
when the time is appropriate and boosting is
necessary.
Constantly educating the stakeholders are
important as well.
Building positive relations with the
stakeholders out of meetings is equally
necessary for maintaining motivation and
fields of interest.

from implementing the sustainable policies.

The benefits of policy implementation primarily
holds the necessity of bringing change to
operational activities and frameworks in the
business. With improved policies and procedures, a
company is eligible to foster positive and
prospering activities at the workplace. The most
important aspect of policy benefit is maintaining
and acting abided to legal risks and creating
opportunity for the company workers to achieve
work morale, work retention and job satisfaction.
The implementation of reformed policies enhances
the operations and behaviour of employees as well.
However, it is important for the company to
communicate all the positive aspects of the policy
to the employees that will empower them to have a
clear knowledge of it and its implications.
