LO1: Understanding structure and history of travel and tourism sector
1.1 Explaining prime historical developments within the tourism and travel sector
Travelling for the purposes of labour has eventually evolved from a typical experience that had
been reserved for few people into anything by many. Historically, it had been believed that
ability of travelling had been reserved for upper classes and royalty. From the traditional Roman
times till the 17th century, people especially young men belonging to higher standards had been
found to be encouraged for travelling throughout the Europe over a ‘grand tour’. In the words of
Woo et al. (2015), through the Middle period, many communities and societies have encouraged
practice of the religious pilgrimage which was reflected from the literary works of ample
authors. Since the post war period, people began to make tours for their refreshment and loss of
extreme frustration.
The term ‘hospitality’ seems to predate the term ‘tourism’, and was first appeared in 14th
century. Various factors have facilitated the growth of tourism as time passed. As per the views
of Saha and Yap (2014), the factors would include- money, technology, freedom to move, social
conditions, infrastructure and probable future developments such as sustainability. It had been
evidently reviewed in these past years that the travel and tourism industry had developed at its
best and has contributed a lump sum share of money into the world’s Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) or income as real output. According to the opinions of Chou (2013), developments in this
industry had contributed entire growth in the world economy and development of far off places
which were almost unknown to the people. With the increase in technology, people had been
able to make decisions for tourism and travelling to distant places for their relaxation and
coolness.
Choices of people have changed in this era than the traditional ones. This is because, in ancient

the willingness to go they could not take an urge to visit the places they wished to. Today, people
are their owners and they can go off new places and explore things by their choices. By the

Money is one of the crucial factors that had determined people’s choices to encourage tourism.
Previously, people used to have the mentality of saving more and today, people consume more
than what they save. Now days, it had been observed people had been more generous and
spendthrift to make travel around the world with their families, friends and relatives. According
to the observations of Xiang et al. (2015), through the timeline chart, it could be shown that how
the graph for travel and tourism has changed and had fluctuations in it. Due to the industrial
revolution, a great deal of tourism and travelling industry had been cracked. People had become
freer for visiting places with the greater availability of transport mediums such as trains,
