Instruction for Supervisor
This case study is designed to assist the candidate in completing skills and
performance evidence requirements relevant to situations in the childcare
centre that do not typically happen on a regular basis, such as emergency
situations, specific type of conflicts that require the candidate to resolve
according to set standards and protocols, etc.
The context of this assessment follows the assumption that the scenario
described below took place in the centre where the candidate is completing
their vocational placement. The candidate will be seeking your advice as the
supervisor in overseeing the situation described in the scenario.
Scenario 1:
During your vocational placement practice you
met other ECE candidates who are also
completing their vocational requirements in
the centre: Antonina, Viktoriya, and Vera.
Antonina, Viktoriya and Vera are best friends
from from a small town in Russia. They moved
to Australia together a few years ago to
pursue a career in childcare.
You’ve spent a couple of years in Russia when you were young, and could
understand Russian quite well. Although you get along well with the three of
them, you noticed that they sometimes speak in Russian to talk
inappropriately about other staff and clients in the centre.
Scenario 2:
One of the activities in your workbooks requires you to
work with other educators in pairs to design and
implement learning plans for a group of kids assigned to
your care by the centre.
Antonia and Viktoriya paired up, while you paired up
with Vera. You sat with them over lunch and they asked
you questions about one of the children in the centre
that “looked different” from the rest.
You realized that they were talking about Adoni, a 4-year old toddler of
aboriginal descent. One of the tasks in the activity was to speak with the
children’s parents to involve them in the design of the learning plan. And
Antonia and Viktoriya openly expressed their frustration because they are
having a hard time communicating with Adoni and Adoni’s parents due to the

language barrier, causing the delay for the completion of their project.
As a result they often just ignore Adoni and just make up the information in his
learning plan. Adoni’s mum noticed that the other educators are not as helpful
and supportive with her and her son and comlplained to you about it.
The candidate will be asked a set of questions relevant to the centre’s protocols
in dealing with situations similar to the above described scenarios. Your role as
the supervisor is to assess the candidate’s responses and provide advice and
support as if the scenario described is an actual situation that has occurred
under your supervision.
In this activity, you will observe the candidate perform the following course of
action:
- Identify specific ethical issues and dilemmas relevant to the scenario;
- Review relevant organisational policies and protocols, and device a plan
to resolve the issue accordingly; and
- Report the issue to you, propose the devised plan, and consult with you
for the best plan of action to achieve service objectives.
The following page is provided for the candidate to document their successful
completion of each task, as well as to record your comments on their level of
performance. These comments are valuable evidence of the candidate’s
competency—where they are not provided, the candidate’s assessor may
contact you directly to get more information about the candidate’s performance.
Complete all parts of the form, including signing the observer declaration on
the last page. Once done, return the completed form to the candidate for
evaluation. The form begins on the next page
