TASK1 CASE FOR CHANGE
Marks and Spencer is a British MNC that is headquartered in London, UK. It operates in
retail sector and provide various types of products such as clothing, home products, food, etc. the
company was founded by Michael marks and Thomas Spencer in 1884. There are total 1463
locations where it operates at global level by which only 959 stores are in UK. The organisation
offers online food delivery through Ocado (Evanschitzky, and Velasco, 2020).
Due to digital disruption the company is facing threat of decline in sales and revenue.
Already in retail sector there is stiff competition. Thus, it is difficult to survive in it. The firm is
also facing threat of losing of loyal customer base in retail sector. In future it might happen that
customer base is small and firm is not able to survive in market for long term.
Here, Marks and Spencer has chosen digital transformation of installing VR and IOT in their
stores. This is done to provide customers a better experience in shopping. Along with that, the
new and advance technology will help customers not to enter in store and they can shop from
anywhere. Besides that, there are bar codes and scanner put on different products by which
customer time is saved. Moreover, with that the ease of payment is easy for customers as well.
The main objective of this transformation is to enhance customer experience and save their time
in shopping. Besides that, another objective is to reduce in store visiting time of customers so
that more and more people can do shopping. The transformation will improve operations
efficiency inside the store.
TASK 2 CAPTURE INSIGHTS
It is necessary for M&S to gain insights about market trends and pattern so that they are
aware about business environment. This allows in adopting those trends and competing with
rivals in industry for long time (Gertsen, and Tollestrup, 2017). So, here the company will gain
insight about who are its competitors in retail sector. Furthermore, they will understand products,
services, price, etc. of competitors. In addition, M&S will capture insight about macro economic
trends. They will find out what changes are occurring in factors such as social, technological,
legal, etc.
There are different techniques through which insight can be captured by M&S. It enables
in gathering of data and info from market. Each approach helps in obtaining different type and
form of data.
