Sustainability business practices which will promote social and environmental
sustainability so as to safeguard meeting the needs of the future generations need to be
undertaken by all business entities. Sustainability report helps the organization to inform the
public about the economic, governance, social and environmental performance of the firm
(Eccles, Krzus, Rogers, & Serafeim, 2012). To effectively establish the sustainability
performance of various companies, two companies which operate in different industries but in
the same countries have been selected. The selected companies are ford motors Canada and
nestle company Canada. This assignment will help to identify the core business activities if the
two companies, core values and their approaches to sustainability reporting.
Question 1.
Ford motors Canada was established in 1904 with the main purpose of manufacturing and
selling automobiles in Canada and in other countries which have a market which can be tapped.
The company operates in the automotive industry so as to try and manufacture bestselling motor
vehicles all over the world. The core activities of the company are to design, manufacture,
market, and service for motor vehicles so as to ensure that customers get value for their money.
The core values of the company include people, who the company believes are responsible for
strengthening the company and improving the reputation of the firm (Ihlen, & Roper, 2014). The
second value of the company is products which the company strives to ensure that they give
customers the best products which serve the needs of customers. Profit is also a value of the
organization as it is responsible for ensuring that the company grows and expands. The social
reporting issue relevant to the company is carbon emission which affects climate and leads to
global warming.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING 3
Nestle company Canada was established in 1918 in Canada Ontario with the purpose of
manufacturing and selling food and beverage products to various targets groups such as infants.
The company is in the food processing industry with the core activities being manufacturing and
processing food and beverages. The core values of the company include respect, integrity, risk-
taking, collaboration, and passion (Dauvergne, & Lister, 2012). The social reporting issue
relevant to the company includes the impact of the product packaging on the environment.
Question 2.
The sustainability reporting of the two companies are different in that ford motors
Canada aims to reduce air pollution while nestle company Canada strives to minimize water and
land pollution which lead to environmental degradation. Vehicles have been tipped as major
pollutants of the air as they use fuel which leads to the production of carbon which leads to
global warming and affects the welfare of the community due to climate change which affects
various sectors of the economy such as agriculture (Blackburn, 2012). Nestle company, on the
other hand, manufactures food and beverage products which need to be packaged before being
availed to the target market. The packaging products lead to land and water pollution as they are
not edible. This leads to land pollution which also affects land productivity. Ford motors
sustainability reports are well detailed as the company frequently communicates the measures
which have been undertaken by the company to ensure environmental sustainability. The Ford
motors reports are also well documented than those of Nestle Company.
The strength of Ford motors social reporting is that social reporting is realistic and it not
aimed at deceiving the customers for long times. The company producing vehicles which emit
less carbon and consume less fuel is realistic. The issue of manufacturing electric cars is also
realistic because the availability of solar power makes the process to be easily achievable. The
