Assessing Physical and Non-Physical Problems and Factors Impacting Mental Health: A Case Study of the Syed Family_2
INTRODUCTION
Assessing physical and non-physical problems, factors impacting mental health plays
crucial role for improvising nursing services being given to patients. The report will shed light on
case scenario, where strengthened focus will be worked on towards usage of best nursing model
and leveraging competent pathways diversely.
Identification of one physical and one non- physical problem of Asma
Roper- Logan and Tierney’s model is a nursing theory that takes into account the
activities of daily life (Vieira, Deodato and Mendes, 2021). The model assesses the changes that
have been brought in the life of an individual as a result of an illness or injury. The model lists
the activities of daily life (AOL)such as communication, eating and drinking, controlling
temperature etc. the model is used for conducting an assessment of patient’s condition so that
suitable care can be provided to him (Holland and Jenkins, 2019).
As per the model, AOL are impacted by 5 factors namely, biological, sociocultural,
politico-economic and environmental.Considering the biological factors, it can be analysed that
Asma’s injury has impacted her overall health. She is suffering from severe pain. This is the
physical problem that Asma is facing. Due to the fall, the neck of her femur has been fractured
and needs surgery. This is causing severe pain to her.
As per the model, the psychological factors include the impact ofspiritual beliefs, ability
to understand and emotions on the AOL (Williams, 2017). It can be analysed that Asma is fearful
about the surgery that the doctors have advised her to undergo to treat the fracture. Due to the
fear of surgery, Asma has become withdrawn. Hence, the emotions are impacting the AOL.
From this it can be analysed that the non- physical problem that Asma is facing is anxiety due to
the fear of undergoing the surgery.
The model also has socio cultural and politico- economic factors and their impact on
AOL (Stonehouse, 2017). However, the biological and psychological factors predominantly play
an important rolein Asma’s case.
The impact of the 5 factors on the AOL in case of Asma can be considered.Through
these, relative independence can be assessed (da Silva Gomes and et.al., 2020). In addition to
this, the potential for independence in AOL can also be assessed. While considering thatit can be

analyse that Asma has become dependent for all her activities as she has a fracture and is in
severe pain. Without surgery she will be dependent on other people for the Activities of her daily
life. Therefore, the physical as well as the non- physical problem identified need to be resolved
in order to improve her self – dependence.
By using the Roper- Logan and Tierney’s model, the problems being faced by Asma have
been identified. Considering the physical problem, the pain from fracture has made her unable to
move. She is also suffering from a drop in the temperature. Also, the severe pain may be causing
immense distress and discomfort to Asma and needs to be treated. However the non- physical
problem that she is suffering from is anxiety. She is fearing the surgery that she has to undergo
and has become anxious. Unable to decide the further course of action, Asma has become
withdrawn. This can be resolved by the nurses by talking to her and communicating the benefits
of surgery to her. This will simplify the procedure and will calm her down.
Rationale of physical and non physical problems of patient with scenario
The physical and non-physical problems of patient holds huge significance for further
improvement in nursing practices which will be given further in hospital. Asma had suffered
physical and non-physical problems due to fall coming out of the bathroom, and was unable to
get up on her own. She has been diagnosed with fracture neck of femur, and is in severe pain and
temperature is 34.8 C on admission at hospital (Gonzalez, Nielsen and Lasater, 2021).
The physical need is that she needs surgery to correct her fracture immediately, for
recovery from fracture at femur. Another non-physical problem identification is based on aspect
that she has become tearful, withdrawn due to anxiety related with surgery. Fracture caused in
femur, due to fall in bathroom is one of the immediate physical problem of Asma which will
enable nursing care to be framed up strategically (Cho and Kim, 2021). This has been hampering
her emotional stability, and making Asma tearful which has led to withdraw from surgery. The
treatment of physical and mental recovery caused from fracture, can be analyzed as highly
essential for further improvising recovery physically. Also, it can be understood that by
analyzing physical and non-physical problems of patient implementation of e Roper-Logan-
Tierney Model will further improvise physical wellness with time period. Rationale of physical
and non-physical problems of Asma will enable further proper effective nursing treatment be
