SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ASSIGNMENT1
Introduction
Menstrual hygiene and management is one of the critical concerns of more than 500
million adolescent girls around the world as they do not have access to cleanliness, sanitation,
menstrual hygiene management systems (Hennegan & Montgomery, 2016). As per the
documentation of The World Bank, majority of the challenges are not only faced by women in
rural regions but also in the major cities and specifically in schools, colleges, work places,
healthcare centers and others (Sommer et al., 2016). Hence, the primary aim of this paper is to
identify the importance of menstrual hygiene management system in several developing nations
for example in India and what are the available conditions that could be applied in the health and
hygiene education of the people. This study would be using systematic reviews and with the aim
of identifying the positive or benefits of it, the complications that could be associated with it,
would be described in this paper.
Research question
How Menstrual Hygiene Management system is effective in reducing the rate of
complications in adolescent girls in developing nations like India?
Method
Search strategy
As per McGowan et al. (2016), search strategy is the process that aims to identify the
research articles that would help the analysis to answer the research questions. Search strategy
helps to identify the critical aspects with the proper application of key terms that are published in
appropriate databases. As mentioned by McGowan et al. (2016), search strategy helps the

researchers to identify papers that would be used in the synthesis of literature review and through
the application of critical reviews, proper investigation of the research questions are obtained.
Further, it was also mentioned that there are multiple peer reviewed journal articles that could be
used in the synthesis of literature so that accurate and applicable answers of the research
questions could be identified. There are multiple databases that were used for the identification
and collection of accurate research articles so that the answer of the proposed research question
could be identified. These are Google Scholar, Pub Med and Medline.
Search criteria
This search criteria that has been used for the search and identification of appropriate
research articles are “management AND/OR managing”, “Menstrual cycle AND/OR menstrual
hygiene”, “developing nation AND/OR low and middle income countries”, “adolescent girls
AND/OR women” and “nursing intervention AND/OR and strategies”.
There are multiple factors that have been used for the enhancement of the search methods
and these factors include proper application of the AND or OR Boolean operators so that
accurate results could be found, Further, it allows the application of catchwords and allowed the
researchers to use truncations while looking for research articles.
Inclusion criteria
The following are the criteria which were used to develop the search criteria for this
systematic review.
The research articles that showed effective results and study design that helped to
answer the research question were selected for this analysis.
