TEXT AND TRADITION: PERSONAL FREEDOM 2
Personal Freedom
From Rousseau’s point of view, freedom cannot be compatible with the political and
social order. Despite the fact that many of the scholars believe the Social Contracts is an
exposition of democratic freedom. The primary reason is not to increase or maximize personal
freedom but rather enable the person to get to a realization of her or his perfectibility. In this
context is at a capacity that Rousseau commonly considers all the ideally human (Rousseau,
2011). In this context, it is ideally true that we should understand “Fifth Walk” as a memoir
which reveals to the audience a given sense of personal freedom as expressed by Rousseau.
In his work, Rousseau has addressed the idea of freedom as compared to other political
philosophy as well as aims in order to explain the manner in which the state of nature blesses
humanity with the idea of evitable total freedom. However, at this particular point of view,
freedom is total only for two reasons. In this case, the natural man is considered to be physically
free since he is not constrained by a suppressive state (Lane, 2006). Rousseau considers man is
psychologically as well as spiritually free since man cannot be confined to any particular
artificial requirements which are described by modern society.
The freedom from needs has been termed as the second sense of freedom, which makes
up a given insightful as well as an innovatory component of philosophy. Based on this concept,
Rousseau believed the enslavement of modern man is to his own needs is the main source of
different kind of societal ills. All the social ills from domination as well as exploitation of others
to depression along with poor self-esteem can be attributed to enslavement of modern man.
Based on this concept, Rousseau believes that the common good of the government should have
the freedom of all the people as one of the essential objectives.

TEXT AND TRADITION: PERSONAL FREEDOM 3
It is imperative to note that Rousseau was attempting to imagine all the form of
government which asserts all the individual freedom based on constraints inherent to the society.
Therefore, Rousseau thus goes on to acknowledge that based on the fact that properties, as well
as law, exists individuals can not be entirely free in the modern community or society as they are
in the natural state. Travelling to the island and secluding himself from the rest of the people
even those who are there with him physically was a way of developing a peaceful interaction
with nature. He believed that interaction with nature brought happiness. However, Rousseau
believed strongly in the existence of principles that governed the independence of an individual.
These principles have been enacted to afford members of the society freedom that can be related
to that one enjoyed in the state of nature.
In this perspective, Rousseau believed in many ways that the human experience is one
which wonders. It is the retentions of the wonderful element to life that gives meaning to life
hence elevate an individual to be free. To this aspect, the combination of the concept of nature
which is not corrupt and the proximity enables mankind to believe in the concept of God with a
grinding necessity of maintaining the wonder in the manner in which the sense has been
perceived. As a matter of freedom, Rousseau draws a contrast between the existences of humans
with the edifices of human society. In this context man has been born to be and thus exists in the
state of nature as free beings. By going back to the idea of nature, Rousseau is perceived to
believe that the human spirit can transcend somehow the divide between the self and the Creator.
This is insurmountable based on the stifling structures which are constructed by the human hands
which creates a disconnectedness that has been inherent in the human societal institutions.
To prove person freedom, the concept of wonders seems to be crucial for human
experience. Rousseau believes that wonder is animating of the mind so that it humans can take
