INTRODUCTION
Good managers need to make the right decisions and ensure the business is able to exploit
any opportunities open to it. At the same time, good managers protect the business by
anticipating and acting against any threats to its welfare. Good managers are provides with
various type of skills that helps them in achieving the set target. They help the firm in achieving
their goals and objectives. Present report will lay emphasis on Tesco. It is one of the largest retail
firms in Britain who are engaged in selling the groceries. Report will lay emphasis on Analyzing
and explaining different philosophical approaches to research and how different epistemological
perspectives may lead to the use of different methodologies.
Background
The main purpose the study is to analyse the importance of good managers in an
organization. It has been analysed that good managers are really required for the development
and productivity aspects of the firm (Andersen and Nationalbank, 2018). They have various
skills that are been required by the organization so that they can grow. Good managers are
innovative and creative, they are been engaged in finding out the ultimate solutions to the
problems that is being faced by firm. There are also various attributes of good managers such as
they are honest, empathetic, passionate, and confident. Good managers are also engaged in
motivating the employees to perform certain tasks which are really necessary for the growth of
firm. They are also engaged in enhancing the level of consumers by providing them with high
quality of products and services.

Significance
Good manager is really important for the success of organization. They are engaged in
enhancing the skills and abilities of workers so that objectives of firm increase. Good managers
are also been involved in bringing out the ultimate solutions to the problems that has been faced
by firm (Virine and Trumper, 2016). They set the standards for the employees and provide the
employees with clear examples about what they need to strive for. Good managers are highly
passionate and confidence towards their work. These are the people who are also involved in
taking feedback from the employees, so that they can bring changes in the management policy if
required. This kind of attitude helps organization in increasing their productivity as well as
operational efficiency. It also assists in increasing the trust and satisfaction level of employee
that is really necessary for the growth of firm.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Theme 1: Benefits of having good managers in firm
In the context of importance of benefits of having a good manager, Notta and Vlachvei,
(2017) stated that a good manager become the main key of the success and accomplishment of
all pre-determined goals of organization. One of the reason is, a good manager of an organization
believes in team working and cooperation. He believes that with proper guidance to employees
he can motivate them and can get success. He does not only guides employees but also work
with them in order to make them feel valued and motivated.
In addition, Elvekrok and et.al., (2018) stated that a good manager never tired as he often
tries to solve disputes and employees queries in a timely manner and this attitude and efforts of a
good manager increase productivity of an organization. A good manager helps his company in
development, expansion, attracting customers to the great extent and taking competitive
advantages.
Theme 2: Attributes and characteristics of good managers
Every organization has manager but only few of them can be a good manager. There are
some qualities and attributes are identified which makes a manager effective and good. As per
the Raza and Zainab, (2019) having an effective communication and decision making skills
make a manager effective and good. With the help of communication skill, manager tries to
listen to employees and all stakeholders which help them out in identifying the situation as well

as problems. After identifying problems, they can make effective decision which allows
companies in making growth.
For supporting this views, Chiu and Fogel, (2017) said that having ability and willingness
to support employees as well as empathy towards other can be considered main characteristics
and attributes which make them good manager. An ability to guide all type of employee in their
work improve image of manager and their personality as well. Empathy makes a manager able to
understand feelings and behaviours of people in order to guide them and satisfy their needs.
Theme 3: Management skills of good managers in Tesco
Rather, attributes, there are some management skills which is known as the main key of
the success of their functions. A good manager and manager of Tesco Plc has an effective
planning and decision making skills. An effective planning skill allow them to perform further
and other functions of manager like organizing, management, controlling and others. Without
having a proper planning a manager cannot make their company successful. Communication is
also known as one of the main management skills because for guiding and controlling, manager
has to interact with stakeholders and lack of communication skills can create misunderstanding
Harris and Kelly, (2019).
Decision-making and problem solving is also considered main management skills which
manager of Tesco posses. It is stated that manager of Tesco has ability to adapt its way of
managing according to the situation and taking appropriate decisions. This ability makes Tesco
able to expand their stores in different countries. So, it can be said that manager of Tesco has
several effective management skills.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
It can be defined as an effective technique which allows researcher to identify, process as
well as analyze all collected informations. It has some elements which overall help scholar in
making the study successful which includes:
Research type: It refers a form in which data related to the topic of the study is being
collected. There are mainly 2 forms in which researcher can collect informations such as
numerical and non-numerical (Reisdorf and Groselj, 2017). Qualitative is the type in which
researcher gathers data in non-numerical form or collect in feelings and words form. On the other
hand, quantitative research is all about related to numbers. Informations relevant to the topic

which are being gathered in numbers form is known as quantitative research. As per the nature of
this study, researcher will collect data in non-numerical form and will use qualitative research.
Research approaches: It is a procedure of combined activities of broad assumption
which include detailed method of data collection, data analysis and data interpretation. There are
2 research approaches which both are related to theories known as: inductive and deductive. In
inductive approach, researcher generating a brand new theory at their own in order to develop
their knowledge and collecting relevant informations to the topic. On the other hand, deductive
approach is about developing an existing theory as well as hypothesis of an existing theory.
Selection of approach depend upon the type of research as inductive is suitable with qualitative
and deductive is suitable with quantitative. This research is qualitative so, researcher will use
inductive approach.
Research philosophy: It refers a belief about ways and a manner in which informations
about a phenomenon should be gathered and analyzed as well. Positivism and interpretivism are
main 2 philosophies of research whose selection is also depend upon the type of research as like
research approach. In positivism philosophy, scholar focuses on human behaviors and conducted
research as like natural science (Packard, 2017). On the other hand, interpretivism is all about
focusing on human interest and takes them into consideration in order to collect data.
Interpretivism is suitable with qualitative research and positivism is suitable with quantitative.
So, for this study, researcher will use interpretivism philosophy.
Data collection: Data collection is one of the important part or element of research
methodology. Because this step allows researcher to collect data relevant to the topic and solve
the main research problem. The main aim of conducting this research is identifying importance
of a good manager in an organization so, for this researcher will require to collect informations
like why a good manager is important, which qualities makes a manger good and how they solve
problems etc. There are 2 types of data collection such as primary and secondary. In primary data
collection, researcher get brand new data and that is why they are known as primary. On the
other hand, in secondary type, scholar gets second hand data which may be used before. For this
study, scholar will make an effective use of both. Some examples of primary data collection:
questionnaire, survey etc. Whereas, books and journals, articles, internet are sources of getting
secondary data.

Data analysis: After completing data collection step, researcher needs to analyze all
collected data in order to make them relevant and accurate. For making the study errorless,
scholar requires errorless and accurate data. With the help of using data analysis tools, they can
mould and make all informations accurate. There are 2 types of data analysis such as qualitative
and quantitative (Friese, 2019). The selection of the data analysis tools depend upon the main
research type. For qualitative research, researcher use qualitative tools which include: thematic
analysis and others. Whereas, for quantitative and numerical data, scholar make use of
quantitative data analysis tools which may include: statistical and SPSS. This present study is
qualitative, so researcher will make an effective use of thematic analysis for molding and
analyzing collected informations.
Sample: Sample refers a group of people or target people which are being selected by
scholar for this study in order to get informations from them. The whole process of selecting and
targeting people is known as sampling. Sampling plays an important role I making the research
study successful. Random and non-random are mainly 2 types of sample by which researcher
target and take people in the research study. Random sample is when, researcher target people at
their own and do not set criteria. Selecting people randomly is called random (Zhao and et.al.,
2018). On the other hand, non-random is when, researcher target people on some basis such as:
experience of people, their ethnicity, gender, age and others. There are chances of bias in such
type. For this study, researcher will target people as per random sampling and will select people
randomly One of the main reason is it motivates people and make them feel valued. 20
employees of Tesco has been selected as a sample.

Interpretation: From the above graph it can be said that communication skills play an important
role. When it was asked if communication is the main skill which manager should posses than
out of 20 employees of Tesco, 14 employees said yes. They also said that there manager posse

this skill. On the other hand, 6 employees said that they do not believe that only communication
is the main characteristic of a good manager.

Interpretation: Some characteristics and attributes found out from the above graph which
makes a manger effective. In this context, out of 20 employees of Tesco, majority of employees
or 9 employees believe that communication is the main attribute. Because managers have to
interact with different people, types of customers and employees as well. On the other hand, 5
employees said that flexibility or ability to adapt changes occur in business environment is the
main characteristic and 6 employees said that team building is the main attribute.

Interpretation: It can be said that from the above data that managers have to deal with several
problems and dealing with all these problems in an effective manner make them a good manager.
Out of 20 employees, 6 employees believe that adapting all those changes which occur in
business environment can be the main problem and adapting them with the help of flexibility is
make them a good manager. On the other hand, 8 employees said that satisfying all background,
age and gender of employees is the main problem which a good manager needs to deal with for
supporting company. Whereas, 7 employees believe that some employees work remotely and
managing them can be the main problem which they need to deal with.

Interpretation: From the above data, some benefits are identified which a good manager have
and it is one of the main aim of developing this study. In this context, majority of employees
stated that a good manager increases employees’ retention rate because they focus on satisfying
needs of them. Whereas, 5 employees interpreted that a good manager support company in
increasing their sales and 7 employees said that a good manager is the reason of increased overall
productivity of an organization.
Theme 5: Recommendations for improving management skills and ability to manage people?
Interpretation: All target people or sample is given equal chance of sharing their views as how
their manager can increase his skills of management. In this context, some employees said that
manager should focus on implementing a good management strategy like democratic and
cognitive. It can allow them to use their best style as per the situation and giving equal
opportunities to employees in decision making process. Rest of employees said that manager

needs to focus on solving problems of employees by providing feedback and open door policy as
it will motivate employees.
CONCLUSION
From the above study, it has been summarized that management skills played a vital role
for success of an organization. Management skills are not only limited to guidance and
communication skills as it is a set of several attributes and skills. Some skills which this study
has discussed include; decision-making skills, empathy, team working, problem solving, an
effective planning and others. All these skills are key of the success of an organization. Further,
this study has discussed benefits of having a good manager as how a good manager helps
company in accomplishing their goals. In this context, it has discussed some reasons and facts as
how a good manager support company with the help of different views of author and literature
review. It has identified that a good manager believe in team working and also believe that
communication is the main key by which he can handle situations. All these skills made them
able to support company in expanding their business, attracting customers’ to the great extent¸
increasing sales, making a good and strong position in the market etc. It has also shown
importance of developing research methodology in developing research as it allows scholar in
gathering, analysing and interpreting informations relevant to the topic.
