Using SCAMPER Model to Generate Ideas for Toothbrush Innovation

This report discusses the use of SCAMPER model to generate new ideas for toothbrush innovation. It explores the substitution, combination, adaptation, modification, put to another use, eliminate, and rearrange steps of the model. The report proposes a tooth stick that can be used as a toothbrush, teeth whitener, and cleaner, with a natural minty mouthwash and a tiny tongue cleaner at the end of the handle. The toothbrush can also be used to play music and can be connected as a Bluetooth device. The report also highlights the importance of creativity and innovation in organizations.

Creativity and innovation
Toothbrush

Task 1: SCAMPER
Creativity is essential for the success of any organization (Mumford et. al., 2012). Scamper
model is used to generate new ideas (Gladding, 2011). In this report, we will aim to use
SCAMPER model on a toothbrush and try to generate more ideas from it.
S – Substitute
In this step we aim to substitute the primary product with an alternative improved product (Buser
et. al., 2011). Tooth stick – Similar to a lipstick but can be used to clean teeth and whiten them.
Toothbrush handle can be replaced with a tongue cleaner.
C – Combine
In this step of the model, the primary product is combined with other attributes (Pathak &
Sharma, 2016). The toothbrush can be combined with other dental hygiene products like tooth
paste, mouth wash and mint.
A – Adapt
In this step, we aim to adapt already existing ideas and add to our new product (Akhtari, 2015).
The bristles can be made of “Neem sticks” which is an age old formula for clean teeth.
M – Modify
A toothpaste disbursing compartment can be created in the brush with a button that will evenly
spread toothpaste on the bristles.
The shape of the handle can be changed.
The toothbrush can be connected to Bluetooth and user will be able to play music while brushing
their teeth.
The length of the handle can be made flexible.

The shape of the head can be circular or square.
It can be a glow in the dark toothbrush so that people can use it in the absence of electricity.
P – Put to another use
The toothbrush can be used as a scrubber in beauty salons. Can also be used to paint small
surfaces and do glass bottle art.
E – Eliminate
The time consumed by people to clean their teeth would be reduced.
R – Rearrange
This is the last step of the SCAMPER model wherein we rearrange the ideas generate ans change
certain attributes of the product (Kaytez & Aytar, 2016). The arrangement of bristles can be
changed. The handle of the toothbrush can be of a flexible height.
Task 2
The primary motive of the toothbrush will continue to remain dental hygiene. Therefore all the
changes and modifications that are being done in the selected idea are aimed at increasing dental
hygiene levels offered by the toothbrush. Technology is a
There are various products that an individual uses in order to keep their tooth clean. The selected
idea creates a one stop product for all user’s dental hygiene needs. The idea is that of a tooth
stick. It can be used as a tool to clean teeth. It will be relatively small in size. It is primarily a
multipurpose stick that can be used as a toothbrush when people wish to brush their teeth and can
be used as a teeth whitener and cleaner if they need to temporarily add shine to their teeth. The
biggest advantage of the product would be that individuals do not need to carry anything else.
The tooth stick would have a natural minty flavor as well as teeth whitening ability. The stick
can be carried anywhere and can be used at any time. A small part of the tooth brush that would
be covered with a small cap can also be used as a lip moisturizer. The selected idea from the

above mentioned SCAMPER analysis is that of a toothbrush that includes the following
attributes:
1. Flexible length for the handle. This feature has been adopted so that people of all ages
can buy the same product.
2. Teeth whitener: The tooth stick will be used to temporarily whiten teeth.
3. Mouth wash: The tooth stick would have a natural minty mouth wash.
4. Bamboo bristles can be used as they have been extensively used by elders in Asia as an
ayurvedic remedy to keep teeth clean.
5. A tiny tongue cleaner at the end of the handle.
6. The toothbrush can be used to play music and can be connected as a Bluetooth device.
This is so that people can listen to their favorite songs while brushing their teeth.
The idea for a square head and a glow in the dark toothpaste color has been cancelled because it
may not be as efficient. The tooth stick designed here has been created as a single tool that would
help resolve all dental needs of an individual.
