TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT3Introduction TQM (Total Quality Management) is an approach to management which commenced in 1950 and is being popularized since 1980. Total quality defines the attitude and culture of the organization which helps in providing satisfactory products and services to the customers according to their demands. The culture demands the quality in all areas in the operations of the organization; the processing is done in the right manner at the first attempt only, and the defects are identified, and the wastes are being eliminated. Total quality management is the philosophy of the management which seeks to incorporate the various functions of the organization like the production of operations, marketing, finance, designing, customer service, etc. These functions are being focused to meet the needs of the customers and achieve the objectives of the organization (Miranda Silva et al, 2014). The method of total quality management helps the employees and management to remain involved in the process of continuous improvement of the production of products. It is the mixture of tools of management and the quality which focuses on increasing the value of the business and minimizing the risk and losses which occur because of the various practices of the waste. Total quality management makes sure that organizations must endeavor continuously improves the process of production by hiring the knowledgeable and experienced workers. Total quality management can be easily adapted by the organizations. Earlier total quality management was only used in the operations of manufacturing but from the past few years, it has become more recognized and popular as a generic tool of management (Eriksson, H., & Hansson, J.2013). As it is also applicable in the other sectors like public and the service sector. Total quality management is the establishment for various activities like the commitment of the management and the employees, fulfilling the requirements of the customer, just in time manufacturing of products, reducing the cost, recognition, focusing the plans for improvement, etc. According to the article ("The good, bad and ugly," 2015), a decade ago, total quality management was losing its value in the business of manufacturing. As organizations started using six sigma more but the origin of six sigma is not clear. It might have commenced in the US. TQM helps the organization in the continuous improvement of the process to deliver the

Introduction
Medical centers face various problems while delivering services to customers. The
problems include such as medical errors and long customer waiting times. The medical center
receives various complains from the customers who spend much time than predicted at the line.
Moreover, the customers also complain about the errors in the diagnosis of illnesses. The
problems facing the medical center have resulted in a reduction in the number of customers due
to dissatisfaction, which calls for the need for improvement.
Therefore, the medical center sought the assistance of both internal and external experts
to begin a total quality management procedure. The procedure was supposed to come up with a
solution to the problems facing the hospital. The various solutions include such as reducing the
waiting times and errors in the diagnosis of illnesses. The total quality management will adopt
the FOCUS model to come up with solutions for the medical center. The FOCUS model will
result in appropriate solutions for the medical center to ensure customer satisfaction (Boag,
2018).
The FOCUS model begins by finding the process that requires improvement, which in the
case is reducing diagnosis errors and customer waiting times (Cole-Ingait, 2018). The other step
includes organizing a team of experts to develop solutions to the problem. The third stage
includes clarifying the knowledge about the current means of improving customer service at the
medical center. The other stage includes understanding the total quality procedures by consulting
with other persons who have undertaken the activity.
Finally, the model requires selecting the improvement processes and the potential actions
to undertake. The medical center appointed a team of experts who used the FOCUS model to

solve the problems facing the hospital (Gleeson, 2018). The FOCUS model is the best approach
when introducing total quality management in an organization.
The FOCUS model
The model has five steps that the total quality experts should follow to ensure success
(Juneja, 2018). The team should adhere to the requirements of each stage since failure could lead
to the underachievement of the set goals. The FOCUS model requires proper selection and
consideration of the various activities to undertake at each stage.
The first step requires the team to focus and identify the exact problem that requires
improvement. In the case of the medical center, the improvement required includes the
elimination of errors in diagnosis and reducing the waiting time spent by customers. The focus
aspect requires the company to carefully diagnose the specific problems facing the company to
avoid dwelling on an issue that does not cause problems (Krishnan, 2018).
Furthermore, has another step that requires organizing a team that understands the
process requiring improvement (Olsen, 2018). The development of a team requires seeking the
help of both internal and external experts with knowledge about the current methods of total
quality management. For example in the case of the medical center, the team could include
persons within the hospital and consultancy firms that deal with the improvement of medical
services.
The third step includes clarifying whether the knowledge possessed by the improvement
team is adequate in the development of the improvement procedures (Smet, 2018). The stage will
involve further research to identify whether other problems exist apart from the identified.
Therefore, the team avoids omitting issues that affect the company but have not surfaced.

TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT 3
Introduction
Total quality management is a concept that originated in 1950s and started gaining popularity in
the early 1980s. A company is required to maintain total quality in terms of attitudes and culture
that aims at providing the best quality products and services to the customers in order to satisfy
their needs (Moccia, 2016). All aspects of the quality is required in the culture of the company’s
operations. This involves correct performance of the processes from very first time along with
eradication of the waste and defects from the operations. Total Quality Management or TQM
assist the employees and the management in making active participation in the process of
bringing continuous improvement in the products and services of the company. TQM comprise
of the combination of quality and management tools that aims at reducing losses due to wasteful
practices and increasing business.
TQM can be defined as the management philosophy that aims at integrating all the functions of
the organization (finance, marketing, engineering, design, customer service, production, etc.) for
the purpose of focusing on meeting organizational objectives and customer needs. Ford Motor
Company, Toyota Motor Company and Motorola are the examples of the company which have
successfully implemented TQM in their business (Goetsch & Davis, 2014). This report focuses
on TQM rationale, outcomes and implementation plan.
TQM Rationale
The rationale behind implementing TQM in the business is the minimization of dysfunction and
errors in the production cycle i.e. planning, production, maintenance, etc. When a business
implements total quality management in the organization, its focus shifts from detection of
defects in the product to the evaluation of all the production phases. The adoption of TQM
approach also has a positive impact on the competition (Garza- Reyes, Rocha- Lona & Kumar,
2015). The main concept hidden behind total quality is that control over the final product does
not add quality rather quality is to be developed at every step through the entire product cycle.
The modern concept of quality provides that only tangible things are not covered under the
heading product and it also includes intangible things such as delivery of a service. A variety of
elements are embraced by the total quality of goods, services and products. Other evaluations
and controls related to traditional quality control are not overshadowed by these controls related
