CE 3.2 Project Background
CE 3.2.1 Characteristics of the project
Transportation of Beirut project was carried out in Greater Beirut, Lebanon.
Redevelopment of the City Centre and improvement of pedestrian safety were the main aims of
this project. The duration of the project was from [please fill] to [please fill] . This project was
undertaken by [please fill]. The Greater Beirut Area is an accident prone area and has vehicular
congestion on its major streets and roads. There is presence of poor streetscape and poor
connections to the transit. The parking spaces and resources were underutilized in this area. The
main characteristic of this project was to maximize the use of transit and incorporate sustainable
strategies for designing the streets.
CE 3.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
City redevelopment projects are carried out for the purpose of reducing accidents,
reducing travel time and creating an attractive as well as safe environment for the pedestrians.

This project was developed in Greater Beirut Area, Lebanon. This project was developed for the
betterment of the civilization. The main objectives of this project are:
 To investigate different planning concepts and present new philosophy for the
sustainable development of mobility
 To investigate the technical, economical and environmental benefits of the
suggested planning philosophy
 To improve spaces for the pedestrians and provide an attractive environment for
the civilians
 To improve the walking experience of the people
 To improve the public transport routes and provide better transit facility
 To improve the parking facilities
 To use innovative design strategies for improving the structure of the pavements
and roads
 To develop the underutilized sites
 To reduce the chances of accidents by proper planning and designing of the road
intersections
CE 3.2.3 My area of work
I was the Team Leader of this project. I had to report to the Construction Manager. My
area of work was to supervise the activities of the team members. I was mainly involved in the
designing of the street structure and developing project plans that were to be followed by the
team members. My area of work was to interpret the task specifications with few numbers of
isometric drawings. I had to control the resource related challenges in a systematic manner. I
had utilized my knowledge and skills of civil engineering for ensuring well-resourced as well as

timely completion of the project. I had utilized my leadership qualities in order to supervise the
performance of the project team members and the progress of the work.

CE 3.2.5 My responsibilities throughout the project
I had several responsibilities throughout the project. Being the Team Leader, my main
responsibility was to provide a clear direction to the team members and promote the idea of
creative thinking. I had to supervise the activities of the team members so that they carry out
their tasks in an effective and accurate manner. I had the responsibility of supervising the site
and designing proper street structures for reducing the chances of accidents. It was my

responsibility to develop a proper plan for improving the walking spaces for helping the
pedestrians and the cyclists. I was responsible for identifying underutilized spaces and
incorporating innovative design strategies for developing and improving the parking facilities. It
was my responsibility to identify the missing links in the networks of the urban roads and
develop a plan for providing better transit facility. I had to check and analyze the average
duration of all the trips and design a road structure that will help to reduce the level of traffic
congestion. I was responsible for proposing a sustainable development plan while focusing on
the role of Bus Rapid Transit and Light Rail Transit systems. I had to divide the roles and
responsibilities among the team members belonging to the different teams located in 10 different
sectors. I had to develop an innovative plan and design for creating a network of safe linkages or
paths through parking lots for the pedestrians. It was my responsibility to review the quantity of
materials for the construction of new roads and parking lots. I was also responsible for preparing
weekly plans, reports and schedules for carrying out the project activities. I was responsible for
ensuring smooth traffic. Being the Team Leader, I was also responsible for motivating the team
members and supervise the overall activities of the project.
CE 3.3 Distinctive Activity
CE 3.3.1 Engineering Knowledge and Skills applied in the project
I have used my civil engineering concepts and designing skills for the improvement the
transportation facility of Beirut. I have utilized my knowledge to design and improve the street
structure of the City Centre. I have applied my exemplary skills to continuously monitor the
performance of the team members and the work-in-progress. My exceptional decision making
skills have helped me to make correct decisions regarding utilization of space for parking

facilities and helping in the designing of a safe transit plan for the pedestrians. I have used my
strong interpersonal and communication skills to motivate my team members and resolve any
conflict. My strong communication skill has also helped me to coordinate and design a proper
plan with the Construction Manager. I have utilized my technical knowledge to use the Paramics
Modeler tool for generating a traffic model for the Beirut City Centre. I have also used my strong
analytical skills to calculate the transportation delay. I have applied my designing skills to
present a well planned structure for the city streets.
CE 3.3.2 Accomplishment and task performed
This project was accomplished with help of proper planning and quality measure
controls. Regular progress monitoring and performance analysis has helped in the completion of
the project. The performance-based planning strategy has helped to achieve the objectives of this
project. Setting of proper performance criteria has helped the team members to maintain certain
level of performance and achieve their tasks effectively. Continuous monitoring of the work-in-
progress has helped to achieve the project success. The complexity of the transportation system
in Beirut has been reduced. Connectors are developed for connecting the pedestrians directly to
buildings, parking facilities and public sidewalks. The structure of the roads has become better
with less congestion. Underutilized spaces have been developed into recreational parks for the
people.
CE 3.3.3 Identified issues and their solutions
CE 3.3.3.1 Issues
The main issue that was faced during the execution phase of the project was the gap in
communication. The non technical project team members were having issue in using the

software called Paramics Modeler. Some of the team members were unable to understand the
importance of this software tool. There were conflicts between the team members during the
planning phase. The initial design plan and strategy was unprofessional.
CE 3.3.3.2 Solution
I had conducted training sessions for the team members. The team members were
explained about the value and importance of the software called Paramics Modeler. This session
helped them to understand that this software will ease their task and help to achieve the
objectives of the project in an effective and accurate manner. The team members were taught
how to use this software. I had developed a communication plan to resolve the conflicts that took
place among the team members. I had conducted a meeting with my Construction Manager in
order to get new ideas and develop new strategies for motivating the team members. Weekly
meetings were held for over viewing and monitoring the work-in-progress. This also helped to
avoid site delays. I have developed an excel sheet to keep track of all the activities. Critical path
method was used and duration of each activity was reduced. I had hired more employees and
workers in case of emergency situations.

CE 3.4.1 Project overview
The Transportation of Beirut project was carried out in the City Centre of Beirut for the
purpose of improving the street structure and providing safety to the pedestrians. This project
executed all the major project control strategies in the civil and construction activities. Effective
project schedule controlling methodologies have helped in the accomplishment of this project.

This project has met the desired quality standards. Proper strategic and sustainable planning has
helped to reduce the complexity of the transportation system in Beirut.
CE 3.4.2 My contribution to work
I was appointed as the Project Team Leader. I had applied my technical and analytical
skills and knowledge to overcome the challenges and to carry out the project in a smooth
manner. I had resolved the conflicts among the team members and motivated them to achieve
their personal as well as project objectives in an effective manner. I was able to solve and handle
several critical situations at the project site. My excellent communication and civil engineering
skills had impressed my Construction Manager. My dedication and hard work played a major
role in the success of this project.
