1BUSINESS, SOCIETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Part A
As opined by Alhaddi (2015), the notion of triple bottom line was first articulated by
John Elkington in the “Cannibals with Forks: the Triple Bottom Line of 21st Century
Business” (1997) and has been used extensively since then by different organizations.
Hussain, Rigoni and Orij (2018) are of the viewpoint that contemporary organizations in
order to attain sustainability are required to take into effective consideration not only the
profitability of their organization but also the environmental and the social impact of their
organization. In order words, it can be said that this approach is a framework through which
the organizations can measure the profit that they are making through their corporate social
responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Part B
The owners of the organization Harcourt Resort Hotel, Gabriella and Tony, for the
process of their business operations are taking the help of the notion of triple bottom line
approach. For the improvement of the condition of planet, they are taking extra initiative to
ensure that the waste generated by the hotel is not disposed in the common dumping ground.
In addition to this, it is seen that the hotel authorities insist that the laundry and the linen used
by the guests are not changed on a daily basis but on demand by the guest so as to mitigate
the damage done by the organization towards the environment. In the context of people, it is
seen the owners of the hotels are trying to contribute in a meaning manner by trying to bring
about a change in the behavior of guests by requesting them to use the linen, towels and other
utilities more than once. In the context of profit, it is seen that the hotel has formed strategic
partnerships with local tradesmen, suppliers and others to enhance the profit earned by the
hotel and also contribute in a sustainable manner towards the economic development of the
surrounding region as well.
