Unconscious Bias2 Unconscious Bias Unconscious bias describes a situation in which personal experience, background, cultural context, and societal stereotypes which can impact the action and decision that individuals make without their realization. It can hide within and individuals, but it strongly affects not only the decision and the actions but also the gender of an individual (Guardian, 2015). However, recognition of unconscious bias is extremely complex, and an individual has to accept the idea that they are biased. A person should be aware of unconscious bias before they know how to identify it. Elimination of unconscious bias follows its identification. The first step in the elimination of unconscious bias is keen with generalization; this is because it creeps in the language; thus, there is a need to be keen on the style used (Guardian, 2015). There is also the need to challenge the decision-making process. Before making taking any action, it is good to consider the question; why am I thinking this way? Furthermore, there is also a need to take a test that helps in theidentification of unconscious biases(Thompson, 2019). This will also promote a better understanding of the individual tendencies towards making unconscious bias. Besides, an avoidance of groupthink can also make an excellent strategy to eliminate the bias in that, individuals then to surround with people who are almost similar to them. Also, a series of shared decision making can result in groupthink, which might have undesired consequences. Finally, individuals can also encourage himself/herself to work beyond their comfort zone(Thompson, 2019). This will involve engaging with other individuals who are new and spending time with people having the same skillsets but different working conditions.
