INTRODUCTION
Tesco is one of the leading organisations operating in retail industry with varieties of
products and services such as clothes, furniture and financial services to meet requirements of
various customers that live in society. Mission of firm is to sustain in market for longer period of
time by continuously innovating products as per needs of individual. This report discuss about
function of HR manager and strength and weakness of recruitment and selection process.
Purpose and function of HRM for fulfilment of company objectives
Human resource manager of Tesco is responsible for selection of right candidate for
specific position so that task can be completed within specific time limit. The main purpose of
HR is to manage diverse individual and motivate them to make optimum utilisation of their
capability for growth and success of organisation (Budhwar, 2016). There are various functions
which are performed by HR manager of Tesco such as:
Workforce planning: One of the main functions performed by HR manager of Tesco is that
planning of total number of workforces that is actually present and required to complete various
task in the firm. It plan in advance number of people that company will required to deliver
qualitative services to large number of customers. So, that there is no shortage of human
resources and skills for effective operation of business.
Organised training and development program: HR manager of Tesco organised training and
development program for employees so that they can develop new skills and capabilities to
perform task. Training and development program contribute towards enhancing existing skills of
employees so task can be performed with minimum errors. Thus, HR manager helps in inducing
confidence and motivation level to perform task in best possible manner so that overall
objectives can be attainted.
Policy formulation: It can be stated that HR manager formulates policy and procedure that need
to be followed by each employees so that task can be performed in best possible manner. It
changes policy as per external environment so that firm can gain competitive advantages in retail
industry (Song, Shi and Song, 2019). Tesco HR manager by formulating standard policies and
procedure is able to maintain quality of products and better satisfaction of customer’s
requirements.

Retention of employees: Another function performed by Tesco HR manager is recruitment as
well as retention of talented, qualified employees within firm so that better services can be render
to customers. It plans different method, techniques that can be used to inspired various individual
to work hard for growth and success of enterprise. Most of the employees of Tesco want to be a
part of organisation due good working environment and ethical practices implemented by HR
manager.
Reward and recognition of employees: It also responsible for reward and recognition of
employees that have worked hard in previous year so that they and other individual can be
inspired to put their best efforts for achievement of objectives. Promotion, increment in salary
and recognition through social media are some of the method used by HR manager to retained
and motivated diverse individual to perform their best.
Strategic management: The main role of HR is to plan in advance various strategies that can be
used by firm to gain competitive advantages in industry (Rodríguez-Sánchez, Mora-Valentín,
and Ortiz-de-Urbina-Criado, 2019). Tesco is one of the leading enterprise in retail industry as
HR manager have make effective strategies that helps in managing various challenges and
effective utilisation of opportunities so that overall objective can be attained.
Employee relations: HR manager of Tesco also plans different techniques to establish strong
relationship among employees so that they can be coordinate to work together as team for
success of enterprise. It state roles and responsibilities and interrelationship between employees
with others so that task can be completed within limited number of errors.
Risk management: There are number of risk in business that are effectively managed by HR
manager of Tesco so that it can continue its operation for longer period of time. Tesco HR ensure
that employees are provided safe and secure environment to work so that no harm can be caused
to them and it can retained strong brand image in retail industry. Thus, it can be stated that HR
manager helps in minimising associated risk by continuous monitoring performance and problem
that are faced by individual while working.
Workforce planning: It is types of process performed by HR manager of firm to recruit
accurate number of skilled and knowledgeable employees for firm. HR manager analysis
existing available human resources and future required so that delivery can be provided to
customers within limited time frame (Hosain and Rahman, 2016). It continuously plans for

growth and development of employees so that various skills and knowledge can be developed
and firm can get competitive advantages.
Advantages of workforce planning
Identification of skills gap: Workforce planning helps in identifying skill gap within firm as HR
manager evaluates existing as well as total required employees for completion of task. It able to
identify skills that existing employees lacks so that effective strategies can be formulated to
enhance skills for better satisfaction of customers’ needs.
Retention of employees: It can be stated that workforce planning contributes in retention of
employees in the organisation as they feed happy and satisfied when Hr manager of Tesco
provide opportunities to them to learn more skills and knowledge for completion of different task
(Haak-Saheem and Festing, 2018).
Increase efficiency: Another advantage of workforce planning is that increase in overall
efficiency of employees as HR manager provide them task as per their capabilities and skill.
Employees get more confidence to perform task in effective manner through training and
development program organised by manager of Tesco thus contribute in increase in productivity.
Evaluation of strength and weakness of different approaches of recruitment and selection
There are two main approaches of recruitment of employees which are used by HR
manager to hired talent employees for growth and success of firm. HR manager recruit
employees through making advertisement of vacancy of specific post on official website of firm,
notice board or through mouth to mouth promotion. Internal and external are two types of
approaches for recruitment such as:
Internal recruitment: Tesco HR manager through promotion and transfer of employees within
firm in able to select appropriate candidate for desired position. There are various medium that
have been used by HR manage of company to recruit employees within firm such as official
website, notice board and mouth to mouth promotion of vacancy of specific position in the firm
(Rockett and et.al., 2017).
Strength
It helps in motivation and influencing existing workforce to perform better in order to get
promoted for high job position in organisation.

Save lot of time, efforts and cost of organisation as manager is well knowledge about
candidate employee’s performance and productivity.
It increase employee’s engagement within Tesco as they are happy and satisfied with
operation of firm and are motivated to put their best efforts so that company can gain
competitive advantages (Jia and et.al, 2018).
It helps in reducing time to hire new individual within firm as manager by promoting
employees can fill vacant position in the enterprise.
Weakness
Whereas there are some weaknesses of internal recruitment such as company have
limited approach and candidate that have more skills cannot be hired within firm.
Hinder new people that have more knowledge, skills to existing employees to apply for
desirable position in the organisation.
External recruitment: It is another types of recruitment in which HR manager plans to hire
individual from external sources such as through placement agency, advertisement through
newspaper, websites and notice board so that eligible candidate can apply for desired position
within firm (Sareen and et.al., 2018).
Strength
Company can select best suitable candidate from large pool that have accurate skills and
capabilities for performing different function of organisation.
Provide opportunities to new individual that have better knowledge and skills can apply
for respective position.
Thus, it contributed in filling skills gap within Tesco.
Weakness
Lot of time and cost is involved in external process as HR manager analysis, evaluates
information about each candidate to select best among them for growth and success of
enterprise.
