British Home Plc is called asuccessful medium sized group of companies who has subsidiaries in several industries liketravel, retail, property and consultancy. It is stated that this business got failed because of lack ofinnovation in group of companies. Each and separate department has its own IT department butas a whole there is a lack of IT specialist (Bell, D., 2016). Due to this, this company sold thisgroup to other American company rather than modernise it. British Home Plc had severalindustries but still it got failed only because of lack of innovation and lack of IT specialists. So itcan be said that there is an increasing importance of information technology for the success and
growth of the company. In the context of its roles and uses it can be said it is being used tosupport some key aspects of an organization which plays an important role for runningorganization efficiently such as decision making, communication, record keeping, data analysisetc. Some other importance, uses and roles of information technology within different functionsof an organization are described as follows:Effective communication: Communication is called the main function and componentof any type of company. Without effective communication, the company fas to face severalproblems like misunderstanding, conflicts among different departments etc. With the rise ofinformation technology, computers and internet, communication has been redefined. Aneffective IT department can allow British Home Plc to achieve communication at a high speedvia different effective channels such as video conferencing, collaboration software, social mediaplatforms and E-mail.Data management: The other main role and use of IT department is it helps thecompany in managing data and informations. Competition in increasing in all industriescompanies which brings increasing amount of data that businesses have to deal with. Forcontrolling data, IT department is being used as it helps companies on storing data, managingdata and accessing data (Laudon and Laudon, 2016). It department puts all data in a storageformat in which database allows the company to store vast amount of data in a small space. Itdoes not only store data but manage all data or it manages all data in a meaningful form. Thisuses and roles of IT department can help British Home plc in taking an effective decisions.Effective marketing: Marketing function also plays a vital role for British home Plc as ithas subsidiaries in diverse industries, so there is an importance to make understand to customersabout its products and services. With the rise of computers, internet and effective use oftechnologies, marketing campaigns are becoming digital. Many companies invest in advancedtechnology which is increasing competition. The main use of IT department in marketingfunction is it creates content, helps in online advertising, helps in marketing research, E-commerce activities etc. IT department would be instrumentals in E-commerce and marketingresearch in the processing of orders made on online stores.Process improvement: Information technology system can be used in improving allprocesses of British Home plc.
