Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the importance of professionalism and its influence
on a specialist area. Here, specialist interest area is teaching and therefore, the impact of
professionalism on teaching profession has been discussed. Moreover, the impact of
professional values on professional practice has been evaluated in this assignment. This
assignment will focus on the policies that are associated with education and training. the
function of self-assessment and self-evaluation is another aspect that will be discussed in this
assignment. This will help to understand the ways in which teaching quality can be improved in
an efficient manner.
Task 1
LO 1: Understand professionalism and the influence professional values in education and
training
1.1 Define the concept of professionalism and dual professionalism in education and
training
The term professionalism refers to the set behaviour, skills and knowledge that an individual
should have in any profession (Johnson, 2016). When it comes to the behaviour, an individual
should respond in accordance with the assigned job role. The professional should have adequate
knowledge and skills. These three attributes are needed in order to be professional. As per my
understanding, in teaching profession, an individual should be polite by nature, which helps in
communicating with a group of people with assertive communication style. On the other hand,
adequate knowledge would help the individual to deliver appropriate information about the topic.
Moreover, appropriate skill set will help to deal with different situations while performing the
job role. After the above-discussion, I have understood that a set of values is required in order to
be successful in this field. The personal values should be assessed in order to improve
professionalism in an appropriate manner.

Dual-professionalism on the other hand, refers to the ability of performing more than one role at
a time. For example, teachers and trainers are the examples of dual-professionalism. A teacher
should have the ability of understanding learners’ learning style. Apart from that, the
professionals should be subject specialist, so that they can transfer adequate knowledge to the
students (Locke, 2014). In case of education and training, the professionals should be less
discriminative and should not impose their personal values to the students. On the other hand,
they should be both vocational and subject specialist. After evaluating the professionalism and
dual-professionalism, I have understood that in education and training profession, I have to cope
up with the changing needs of the students. I have to evaluate the learning style of each student
in order to be more effective.
1.2 Explain ways in which own professional values influence own practice in an area of
specialism
Professionalism refers to the behaviour of an individual, which helps to perform the job role
appropriately. In order to achieve personal objectives, an individual should understand the set of
skills and competencies that are required for the particular job role. When it comes to my
perception, I have realized that in teaching profession, an individual should perform in a
professional way. Here, it is important to consider certain aspects such as less discriminative
practice, ability to understand students’ requirements, good communication skill and adequate
subjective knowledge (D'amico et al., 2017). The definition of professionalism can be strengthen
with the help of professional values that an individual need while working on a particular
profession. Following is the influence of professionalism on professional values in context with
education and training.
Understanding students’ learning style
As per my viewpoint, a teaching professional should understand the learning style of the students
in an appropriate manner (Wilkinson et al., 2014). The professional values of teachers will
influence them to assess leaning style of the learners before implementing any method. In this
process, it will be easier for the professionals to communicate with the students and discuss the
subject.

Knowledge
Professionalism has wide impact on an individual’s knowledge. In teaching profession, it has
been evident that a professional teacher should be a continuous learner (Al-Eraky et al., 2015).
Here comes the concept of dual-professionalism. A teacher should have adequate knowledge
about both how to teach and what to teach. Therefore, it can be said that professional values
influence the professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills according to the requirements.
Less discriminative
When it comes to my professional values, it has influence me to be less discriminative while
teaching. As per the professional ethics, I should not discriminate the students based on racial
parameters. I should evaluate the learning style of the students despite of their religious
background, gender and sexual orientation. In teaching and training, it is the responsibility of the
professionals to consider every individual equally. Therefore, equal opportunity needs to be
provided in order to improve the teaching process.
Communicating with the students
After assessing the set of values required in this profession, I have realised that it has wide
impact on my communication skill. I have developed assertive communication skill in order to
establish own opinion over others. I should give value to others’ perceptions, which will further
help me to improve my skills in an appropriate manner.
Honesty, dignity and integrity
When it comes to my professional values, I believe that individuals should have adequate
dedication towards their work. Moreover, honesty and dignity are two attributes that required for
being successful in any field (Niu et al., 2017). In teaching profession, it is the responsibility of
the teacher to minimise unethical practice among the students. Therefore, the personal values has
wide impact on own practice such as honesty and dignity.
