Executive Summary:
This report aims at analyzing and understanding the real life competition among the
companies in a particular industry, their growth and pricing strategies to outperform in the
market and to survive for a long term. For better understanding of the topic a competitive
analysis has been done in this report, based on the primary and secondary data available for
two competitive companies, Woolworths and Coles Supermarkets. Both the companies are
leading in the Australian food and groceries market. In this report their competitive strategies
have been analyzed to understand the reason behind their success for a long term. Lastly the

Introduction:
In a competitive market structure, every business organisation should have some core
competencies which can give them some extra competitive advantage over the others. In the
modern age of technology and innovation, they need to offer innovative products and services
with competitive pricing strategies to achieve a highest market share and to survive for a
longer period of time in the market. For doing so, companies need to build up such business
strategies which beats the performance of their rivals and places themselves in the market
above their rivals. In this report, strategies of two Australian food and retail organisation have
been analysed based on primary and secondary data, to understand their pricing and
competitive strategies.
Brief overview of the companies:
Woolworths is an ASX listed Australian retail chain of food, groceries and consumer
products. They have been the market leader in the respective industry in Australia and
successfully serving millions of customers with their quality and innovative products
(woolworths.com.au, 2019). On the other side, an older brand in the same industry, the Coles
supermarkets have also been enjoying a huge market share and giving intense competition to
the Woolworths (coles.com.au, 2019). Before Woolworths, the Coles Supermarkets have
been enjoying a certain level of monopoly in the market and after the incorporation of
Woolworths the market becomes more or less a duopoly because of intense competition
between these two companies.
Market Structure and Competitive Strategies:
The Australian food and groceries market was mainly dominated by the two
companies, Woolworths and Coles supermarkets, but later on with the entry of some other
