AI Summary
This report examines claims, concerns, and issues in healthcare, specifically focusing on the use of IV channels in vascular dementia patients. It highlights the benefits of IV channels, such as their effectiveness for patients unable to take oral medications or with dysphagia, while also acknowledging potential drawbacks like faintness, dizziness, and other side effects. The report references relevant literature, including Hussain et al. (2014) and Krüger et al. (2016), to support its arguments. Furthermore, it addresses the ethical implications of IV channel placement, particularly concerning patient autonomy and beneficence, using Mr. X as a case study to illustrate the conflict between respecting a patient's wishes and providing potentially beneficial medical interventions. The report concludes by emphasizing the importance of balancing these ethical considerations in healthcare practices.

Claims, Concerns and Issues-(Topic, e.g. Restraint)
Claims
What positive statement would I make about the
care in the place I work
Concerns
What are my concerns about the care at the
place I work?
Issues
What questions do I have about the care in the
place where I work?
There are favourable assertions that can be
made regarding the IV channel is that it is an
effective intervention for vascular dementia
patients who refuse to take medications orally or
suffer from permanent dysphagia. This also
improves nutrition in the population who are
unable to feed on their own like in progressive
dementia or other mental health conditions
(Hussain et al. 2014).
IV is considered to be an unfavourable assertion
as it gives rise to faintness, dizziness, fatigue,
lethargy, insomnia, mild slow heart rate,
shortness of breath, indigestion, constipation,
cold, swelling or confusion. According to Krüger
et al. (2016) among all the proposed medical
interventions, in case of progressive disease
conditions like vascular dementia, the benefits of
IV channel placement does not outweigh the risk
factors associated with it.
There is no evidence that medication through IV
channel increases one’s life expectancy or reduce
risk for pneumonia, relieve suffering or
improvement of skin integrity.
Regarding the care of Mr X, it is evident that it
raises ethical issues of respect for autonomy and
beneficence. Mr X does not want any IV channel
insertion in his body and one the other hand,
forceful IV channel placement or kind or restraint
violates the ethical principle of respect for
autonomy. Moreover, IV channel placement is an
act of beneficence promoting Mr X welfare to
support medication and nutrition.
