1.1 Comparison in Different Management Style
Management is key to success as it will help in bringing up work in much organized
form. The employee as well as the employer will be able to carry out their work in much
efficient manner once the work is being conducted in managed form. The reason behind work
management in TUI group is that they have opted several kinds of management styles which are
different from each other but helps in managing work (Egan, 2013).
Managerial styles: Human relationship approach: it is the style in which mangers focuses on the building
relationship with employees. TUI group can adopt this managerial style, it will give
positive results and conflicts situations will get minimized in the organization. But over
friendliness can spoil environment of workplace and people will not look upon their
duties seriously. Classical approach: It is the concept which pay more attention on productivity,
efficiency and optimistic output. The main benefit of using this style in the Thomas cook
is that managers will be able to understand their responsibilities. As it is based on tall
organizations structure so managers will circulate objective of firm to lower level this
will give positive result to the organization. But this managerial style have more attention

to rules and regulations that can force people to follow rules and they forgot their original
intent. Thomas cook will get benefit of that because it follows tall structure and managers
have good command over their workers.
Contingency approach: It is the management style which concentrates on situations and
according to the nature of condition managers change their behavior. If TUI group and
Thomas cook adopt this style then it would be better for the firm as managers will be bale
to modify their roles as per the demand of situation. But on other hand it will not give
optimistic results to organizations if managers do not have proper control over their staff
members.
Different kinds of managing styles are:-
The Directive Style:
This style is generally opted by the manger of the TUI groups in which they keep a clear
observation on to the work done by employee. They closely observe the work and then control
employee regarding the same. The main focus done by manager is on the motivation and
discipline come up by threat that every employee face. Such style is effective during the time of
crisis or when deviations became risky.
Where as
The Pacesetting Style:
This style is generally adopted by the employee itself of TUI group. In which employee
take a charge to accomplish task by himself in much efficient manner. Employer used to perform
task by their own and expect subordinate to follow the same so that work will be conducted in
much managed form. Such style is effected mist when the employee in TUI group are highly
motivated and are managing directors.
The Authoritative Style:
The primary objective is to provide long term direction to the employee who has been
working in company so that they will not face any kind of difficulties. Clear instructions and
directions will be given to employee and motivated on the term of feedback which will be given
on task performance(Hwang, and Ng, 2013). Such managing style is most effective when the
leader possess the potential to direct its subordinate or group of people credible. It is the style

1.2 Characteristics of leadership
Leadership: It is the ability of person and act to inspire others, so that they participate more in
and contribute well in achieving goal of the company.
Leadership characteristic:
Autocratic leaders take own decisions and imposed on others. They distribute
responsibilities and make effective control over employees. It believes that by giving rewards
and recognition employer can motivate team members. Democratic leadership id differed from
autocratic. The main characteristic of this leadership style is that leaders involve all people in
decision making process. Leaders pay more attention on the shared approach. Laisses-Faire is
another type of leadership, It left alone to employees as leaders believe that people can do their
work without much guidance or can be said that flexibility is main characteristic of this
leadership. Team members are highly talented and motivated. People need guidance and
assistance time to time for accomplishing their work significantly. A great leader has to lead his
team in such a manner that they can perform better and contribute well in the growth of entity.
For the same, it is necessary that individuals will have some unique characteristics so that person
can lead the team well (Démeh and Rosengren, 2015).
Positive attitude: Positive attitude is the characteristic of laissez-faire leadership, it is the
main feature of TUI group leaders. A leader needs to be positive all time so that leader
can inspire others and can make them positive towards their job. Leader of TUI creates
relaxing and healthy atmosphere at the workplace so that all workers would feel
motivated and stay in the organization for longer period.
Autocratic leadership is adopted by Thomas cook, providing rewards and recognition is the main
characteristic of this leadership. Leader of Thomas Cook creates a positive working environment
by making them aware with the monitory benefits for them. By this way employees will like the
workplace and they will perform better In the organization (Chang, 2015).

Empowerment: laissez-faire leadership is adopted by TUI group, empowerment is the
main characteristic. It is a great characteristic of leader in which individual gives power
to all workers so that they will feel valuable in the corporation. Leader of TUI takes
timely feedback from its employees along with suggestions before implementing any new
policy (Shinde, 2015). This feature of leader helps the organization in motivating
members. By this way, they will be loyal towards the organization and contribute well in
the development of company. However, on the contrary, Autocratic leaders of Thomas
Cook can not give power of decision making to workers because of lengthy team size and
structure. It is not possible for them to involve all employees in decision making process
so they take their own decisions and impose on workers (Bullough and de Luque, 2015).
Communication flow: It is the main factor that can improve the performance of
company and can help in reducing conflict situations. Laissez-faire focus on the
communication flow which is main characteristic of this leadership. Leaders of TUI
always adopt downward interaction. They pass the relevant information via email and
telephone among all workers and then arrange a common meeting to discuss upon that.
By this way, workers would feel involved and they share innovative ideas which supports
the leaders in making effective decision (Posner, 2016). However, on the other hand,
Autocratic leaders of Thomas Cook communicate with head of departments and take their
decisions. After making final decisions, department's head circulate information with his
team members.
Creativity: It is another characteristic of leader where he has to use creativity to perform
the tasks well. It assists in enhancing the level of interest of employees towards his/her
job (Yoon, Kim and Shin, 2016). laissez-faire Leaders of TUI arrange brainstorming
session so that employees think innovative. Whereas, autocratic leaders of Thomas Cook
discuss ideas with higher authority and implement it at the workplace. Leaders of cited
firm give appreciation and rewards to employees so that they would like the workplace
and share their creative views with management.
Motivation skill: Leader needs to have ability to inspire others. In TUI, laissez-faire
leaders inspire their workers by sharing their experience and success stories with
employees. It is the good way to motivate people (Fransen and et.al, 2015). However,

Thomas Cook's autocratic leaders motivate them by giving non monitory rewards like
appreciation, promotion, etc.

Communication is an effective tool which supports organization in reducing confusion
and conflict situation at the workplace. It is the process of exchanging message from higher
authorities to lower employees. TUI is the leading company of UK which follows two way
communication process (Saiki and et.al, 2016). In this, higher authorities conduct a meeting and
involve all employees in it. They ask their views on particular topic and take their suggestions
before making final decisions. To communicate with customers, cited firm uses online medium
in which they take time to time feedback of consumers so that company can improve its process
as per the wants of clients. Communication process in the TUI is as follows: Development of idea by sender: They design proper structure for circulating a meaningful
information among staff members. Encoding: Message is then translated into meaningful language so that no further
confusion takes place and the other party would understand the same in a manner in
which sender wants (Vinkhuyzen and Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen, 2014). Development of message: After encoding phase, message gets transferred to the receiver.
It gets circulated in both the ways, that is, orally and in written form. Selecting a medium: TUI uses email and telephonic ways to pass the information in all
departments. . It is a two way medium if any person has confusion then individual can
revert it back. Transmission: Once they receive the message, it is received by employees. It is the end
stage of communication by sender's side. Receiving message by receiver: Employees get the message and they read it properly. Decoding: All workers translate the information in a way so that no confusion would take
place in understanding the meaning (Liang, Xue and Wu, 2013).
Feedback: In the last phase, they revert the mail and give their feedback on it.

However, as Thomas Cook follows tall structure so, it is not possible for the organization
to follow such a lengthy process because it is time consuming. So, higher authorities make their
decision and circulate it simply. Thomas Cook does not ask them to give their suggestion as it
just imposed the decision on employees and they are bound to follow their instructions.
Communication process of Thomas cook is upward in which higher authorities pass information
to head of departments and after that it passes to lower employees. Employees have to ask with
senior authorities and then they coordinate with consumers. Higher authorities uses email system
