INTRODUCTION
Whether an organisation is big or small or it is of whatsoever industry or area, it is
operating in an economy; therefore, it is important for them to maintain and develop the
management of the company. The management of the company is that part which is regularly
involved in operations of brining the company on the path of development. This can be easily
done by developing their managers who are employed in company as they are the ones who
are that much qualified to make good decision for business. The present report is about how
the management of a company can help its employees in upbringing and developing so that
they can perform in a better way. The report will cover TUI travel company which is a
London based one of the best travel and tourism organisation operating in hospitality
industry. The report will also cover management style and its types and the ways
communication help the organisation in culture development. Further, it will cover leadership
style and means through which motivation of team will help in attainment of the goal of
company. At the end, it will conclude with various career and personal development needs,
present performance and future need in order to design development plan in the travel and
tourism business.
TASK 1
1.1 Comparison of various management styles and discussion of leadership characteristics of
senior management.
The way a manager handles and motivates the employee are all part of management
style and this is the overall leadership method which helps the manager to grow the
organisation. TUI travel company is a UK based travel company and this was formerly
known as Thomson holidays (Brennan, Kirwan and Redmond, 2016). The management of
TUI travel use various types of management and leading styles which will be helping the
individual employee of the company in understanding how to grow. The different types of
management styles which are used by the TUI managers are as follows:
Autocratic style- This is also known as dictator style of leading where all types of decisions
are taken by one person of the company only. The manager of the company is taking decision
of company on unilateral bases and did not regard even the most talented and experienced
subordinate of company. In the decision of autocratic management style, opinions and
personality of that manager who is involved in taking decision is only reflected. In this also,
there are two types through which manager can take decision:

In which they do not consult any other from the subordinates and take the decision
In the other they give permission to give the subordinate chance to suggest.
The main drawback of autocratic management style is that the manager who perform negates
all form of teamwork and they also refuse to delegate authority to anyone else in
organisation.
Consultative style- As the name suggests, in this type of management managers before
coming to any of the decision always consult others in company (Mathe, Scott-Halsell and
Roseman, 2016). This is in contrast to autocratic style as this gives the employee chance to
suggest about decision but in autocratic style management only give the instruction.
Therefore, in this type of management style communication is the main element without
which it cannot consult the subordinate before coming to decision. The main drawback of
consultative management style is that it is very time-consuming process as many employees
need to be considered.
Participative style- This is also known as democratic management style in which all the
employees of an organisation are considered and their views and suggestions are taken before
coming to any decision. The amount of communication in this type of management style is
very extensive as this is the main and most important element of the process. Taking
employees from the lowest part to the top most part of the organisation and then asking them
about certain decision is done (Kaynak, 2014). This involves high amount of job satisfaction
among the employees as the quality of work of the employee will be increasing and also
include the participation of the subordinates. The demerit of this type of management style is
also there if the communication process of the company is not very good and is lengthy then
this will consume a lot of time to come to certain decision.
Laissez Faire- In this type of management style, all the employees are allowed to show their
creativity and give a stronger opinion and ideas about the present issue. Managers in the
company are considered to more than mentor and less than leader. There is also a demerit in
this type as the employee will only be involved in the decision making and not in performing
their work or job.
All the managers at TUI travel from top to bottom need to have certain similar
characteristics so that they can manage their employees and their work effectively (O'Cass
and Sok, 2013). Senior management need these characteristics more than that of junior
management as they are the one who is involved in taking the decision for whole company.

The following are some characteristics or leadership qualities which each managers or leaders
need to have so that they can effectively manage the organisation.
Be confident- if a manager want them to should be able to work with the employee and help
the employee in achieving the overall objectives they need to be confident about the work or
decision which they are taking (Poorani and Platt, 2015). This will also help the employee
and manager to have a clear and transparent communication between them.
Focus- The focus or eye of the manager should be only on achievement of overall
organisational goal and then should plan and organise accordingly. Being focussed in their
work and about their goal will help the manager to take their decisions and maintain their
market position.
Honest- This is the basic thing which each and person in organisation need to have as being
truthful and honest towards the work and organisation will lead to greater and a good
manager in company. It is also important for them to make sure that all employees in
organisation know what is the culture and core competency of the company.
Inspiration- this is also the duty of manager to inspire their team members so that they can
work and perform effectively and efficiently (Shaikh, AlTurabi and West Jr, 2016). The
leader is always been the inspiration of their team members and they motivate them to
achieve the organisational goal and their personal goal as well. Ultimately this inspiration
will be helping leaders only in the long run as the employee can perform in a better way as
they would be doing at present.
1.2 Evaluating the communication process within TUI travel and analysing organisational
culture and also the change which is taking place in TUI.
TUI travel was founded in 2007 by the merger of First choice holidays and Tourism
division of TUI AG. At present the company is operating in almost 18 countries of the world
and is handling 30 million customers and the total revenue of the company is around £20
million in the year 2015. The company is also listed in London Stock exchange market with
the constituent of FTSE 100 indices (Austin, Regan and Carnochan, 2013). The
communication process in the company is very simple and easy to understand as it is using
the participative style of management and allowing all the managers and employee at all level
to participate in the decision making process.
The communication process is the step which are taken by the company in order to
successfully communicate within the organisation. Communication is the ways in which an

individual exchange their knowledge. Ideas and suggestions to one another and enabling
them to understand in a better way. The communication process within TUI travel include
certain elements of the process like sender, receiver and channel or the most important a
message which they need to convey to each other.
Sender- this is the element though which the process of communication get start and sender
is the person who transmit the information or message. If the manager if the marketing
department of TUI travel is explaining any new marketing technique to their employees then
manger of the department will be regarded to as sender of information.
Message- this is whether in oral or written form and help in triggering the response of a
particular receiver (Tanner and Harpham, 2014). This is the information or idea or view
which is to be conveyed by sender to its receiver. Like the manger of TUI telling the new
marketing technique to its employees is the message in communication process
Encoding- this is certain words or non verbal methods which is used in giving information to
receiver. This is simply the use of simple and easy words in sending the message so that it is
easy to understand by receiver.
Channel- this is the way through which the message is sent by sender to receiver which can
be whether electronic channel or written format. Channel of communication is the way or
path of sending message from sender to receiver. In TUI the channel which is used to convey
message from sender to receiver are reports, bulletins, telecommunication, verbal form,
written message and visual communication.
Receiver- this is the end user of the message and who will be getting and understanding the
message which is given by sender (Zhu, Benoit and Rios, 2015). In TUI travel there are many
receivers of message which is given by company like if they need to introduce any new
holiday package in company then the receivers of this message will be employees and
customer both.
Decoding- the correct interpretation of the given message from sender to receiver is also
important which is known as decoding of message. There is no guarantee that the receiver
will be able to understand the given message in that form only in which sender wants it to be.
This will totally depend on the personal understanding and individual experience of the
receiver.

Feedback- this is last step of communication process in TUI as the end user of message will
be giving his feedback on what he understood and what is his opinion in the particular
message. The interaction of receiver with that of sender is known as feedback.
M1 Application of different management style and compare them in hospitality industry.
There are different types of management style which are to be used in hospitality
industry and the most common or which is used in TUI travel company is participative
management style (Zepeda, 2013). They also apply all types of other management style in
various situation this also help in comparing them within the whole hospitality industry.

2.1 Assessing own management skill and performance and analysing own strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
The management skill are those which enable all the manager in organisation to
develop and also to find out the areas of their development. As I have been appointed as
management trainee in TUI travel which is one of the best travel and tourism company in
hospitality industry so I need to have certain skills on the bases of which I can perform better.

manager I need to overcome them so that I

Threats
My biggest threat is from other mangers in

I want to grow in organisation and I need to
identify threat so that they can be lower
down.

2.2 Setting objectives and target in developing own potential.
The main target in TUI travel company will be self growth and achievement of target
of company and to match up these targets with that of self. Setting up of objectives and target
will help me in developing self potential which will intern be helping me in my and
company's growth (Throop and Castellucci, 2009). The main objectives as been the manager
will be helping the employees in their problem and organising them so that all employee can
achieve the target. Objectives and targets in TUI travel company will be as below:
Team building- this will help me for better understanding of each of the employees who are
working under me. Team building is the most important task which every manager at work
need to perform. This will be useful in achievement of the set targets and this is the objectives
of manger.
Higher employee motivation- this is also regarded as the objectives of manger as they are
the one who also motivate the employee by giving them reward of work done by employee
(Stark, 2006). If the employee in organisation is motivated then they can easily perform in a
good way and which will at the end help company in achievement of the set target.
Earning profits- this is regarded as target of manager at all level and in all departments.
Increasing profit and revenue and decrease of cost and loss is very important for all the
company. As in hospitality industry the amount of competition is increasing day by day so
the profit earning must be also higher than others.
D1 Conclusion of strength and weaknesses.
There are many strength and weaknesses in me as a management trainee at TUI travel
and this will be helping me in further growth and development. From the self assessment
which is done this need to be noted that my software skill are very good and this can be used
by organisation. But as a manager there are many weaknesses which need to be addressed
and they should be overcomes by me so that I can perform.
TASK 3
3.1 Leading and motivating a team to achieve an agreed goal or objective.
TUI travel company is having objective is remained on the top position in the
hospitality industry (Selznick, 2011). As is the leading company in the hospitality industry
and travel and tourism sector of the world. So the manager of the company need to motive
and lead all the employees of company so that they can help company in achieving this target
or objectives. To motivate the employee and achieve the goal is very important for manager.
With the help of this TUI will be able to achieve the set target of remaining at the top position

and to grow by 12% each year and earning €1.1 billion in 2018 starting. There are some set
ways and methods which are adopted by company to motivate the employee towards the goal
of business.
Giving opportunities to grow- if the manager will give all the employee equal
chance to grow and develop the lacking behind skills in them. This will be helping all
of them in growing and developing and then achievement of organisational goal of
earning €1.1 billion in the first quarter of 2018. All the opportunity which they are
giving must be equal for all the employee.
Supporting new and innovative ideas- this is also important as there are many
employees in TUI travel company and they are having many innovative ideas. This
innovation and use of technology will be affecting the whole company is better way
and this will be encouraging employee (Scott and Jaffe, 2004). All the new and
innovative idea or suggestion of employee must be supported by the managers so that
idea can be helpful in achieving the goal.
Making and building team sprite- without working in team the objective will not be
able to achieved. To built up the team and then supporting them in all their plan is the
duty of manger which need to be fulfilled.
Healthy competition- to achieve the set target of TUI travel there must be healthy
competition in within the organisation so that all the employee can be a part of that
competition. In this context manager must motivate the team members and helping
organisation in delivering positive impact on the employee.
3.2 Justification of managerial decision and making achievement of agreed goal and objective
recommendations as well.
All the above said methods which are used by manager which will be helping in
achievement of goal and objectives of TUI are important. They need to be justified as to why
are been used in the setting and achieving the goal (Schein, 2006). It is required by TUI travel
company to maintain successful operation in enterprise and leading them in systematic way.
Is there is effective team management and building of team then all the employee can
participate in decision making process of the company. This will also help in effective and
transparent communication between employee and management so that there are less chance
of dispute between their thoughts. Innovation and use of digital technology will be also very
much useful for TUI travel and thus enabling the employee to put up their idea about
different ways to earn higher profit.

All the manager must give each and every employee or their subordinate equal and
fair chance to grow. This will be done by giving them responsibility and analysing their
strength and weaknesses so that they can overcome it and lead company (Saeed, 2014). By
establishment of team and overall business objective will be helping the company and
manager and thus making it easier for them to attain that goal.
M2 Relevant theories and techniques to justify managerial decision.
Bowman theory of managerial decision making is use in TUI which will help the
manager to make good decision and show a great variance in the behaviour of manager. It is
the work of manager to take decision regarding all the area of organisation and helping them
to attain goal. Bowman theory will tell the manager what is correct and how it can improve to
make the manager rational about their decision (Noe, 2013). They will also need to assume to
maxims the present value of current and future earning and thus helping them to solve
problem.

4.1 Determining the own personal and managerial skills to support career development
To make the adequate development in the operational activities of business there is
need to evaluate the personal managerial skills. In terms of enhancing the quality of
performance for TUI in the hospitality sector there is need to make the proper examination of
the needs and wants of consumers as well as thir preference. In terms of internal efficiency
there will need of monitoring the cost requirements as well as profitability of firm. However,
it will be fruitful for entity in context with acquiring the targeted goals as well as growth in
the future. However, in terms of enchaining the business efficiency there is need to develop a
plan for career development of company such as:

not be possible without good and sound communication procedures in company for having
