Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The construction industry has been a Primary sector in economy of any country in the world.
This industry has been helping in contributing in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country
(Zein, 2016). The industry has been generating a huge amount of employment and income to
individuals. Therefore, the construction industry has been taken seriously in the development of
the country. This research has focused on large scale projects dine in the UK. According to the
UNEP reports, about one-tenth of the global economy has been dedicated from the construction
industry. Recent statistics report has estimated that approximately $1.17 trillion has been
contributed by construction industry worldwide (Huang, 2016). Therefore, this industry consists
of repair, construction and maintaining infrastructure. This came with huge number of employees
and labour employed in the industry. Construction activities have been taking place in different
part of the UK. Various enforcement have been included in the construction of various estates
and projects. Large scale projects have been included different parts of the construction as many
elements are included. A comprehensive study by the International Labour Organization (ILO)
(2007) has verified that there has been a correlation between disposable income and any
government investment in construction work (Price, 2015). Large scale construction projects
have been done in different locations and departments under a large scale. The variations in the
locations have been creating cultural differences in the project management. These cultural
differences have been causing conflicts in building trusts and communications. Cultural
differences have been causing issues in the successful completion of the projects.

This research has been focused on the major cultural differences in the large scale
projects. This study has been based on the impact of project success managing multi-cultural
project teams in projects. Various cross-cultural conflicts and project management issues have
been discussed in the research. Different working styles and cultures have been critically
analysed in the study.
1.2 Rationale
Globalisation has been increasing all over the world. There has been various impact of
globalisation in different sectors. It has affected various companies in the construction industry
including availability of resources, skills, reduced cost, specialised experts and other benefits.
Communication among employees and project leads have been increased with the
implementation of globalisation (Bartel-Radic & Münch, 2016). A large scale project can be
handled from different places with the impact of globalisation and technology. Globalisation
have been helping in maintaining a keen approach in the development of various construction
projects in the UK. Globalisation has been increasing operation all over the world. Therefore, it
can be analysed that globalisation has been helping in maintaining cultural approach in the
development of construction project. Various multi-cultural projects have been maintained under
project leads at various parts of the UK (Jackson, 2016).
Culture has been referring to the culture of working style of different employee in the
large scale projects at different sites. The change in location create diversity and cultural issues
in the project. The working culture of different employees in the location shave been different.
Different countries used to have different working culture and characteristics (Ozguler, 2016).
Therefore, it has been becoming difficult to handle such kind of cultural changes in the project.
Cultural issues have been creating conflict in the UK construction industry. Therefore, there has

been a keen need of the research in this sector. In project management, various cross-cultural
project teams have been dealing with stakeholders and project management issues including lack
in funding and delay in project delivery. This also include cultural disperancies among workers
and employees in the project team. Cultural issues have been contributing in the project
management conflicts (Averweg & Addison, 2015).
This research has thrown light on the affected of multi-cultural issues in the large projects
in the UK. This research has focused on the cultural dimensions in the UK. The change in the
locations have been create ng issues in the cultural diversity. This research has been helping in
maintaining a keen approach to the development of the construction projects in the UK. There
have been various cultural based models and theories used in the study for critically analysing
cultural diversities in the construction projects.
1.3 Problem Statement
The primary problem statement has been how the cultural differences of project teams
may affect Project Management in the Mega EPC Project. Large scale construction projects have
been facing problems with the culture and working condition of the employees. The change in
the location shave been causing issues at cultural dimensions. The impact on the multi-cultural
projects in the project success have been discussed in the research (Tregubova, Kozlov & Kats,
2019). A project management literature has been contributed in the research that has helped in
maintaining management touch ion the study. The issues in the cultural dimension shave been
identified in the UK construction sector. Various countries have their own culture and working
style. This create issues in the management of project at large scale. In the UK construction,
male dominance has been more than that of female (Cheshire, Hall & Adger, 2017). Therefore,

Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Project Management Theory
2.1 Project Management Theory
Project management and its research is observed to be growing and developing. As the
projects keep on developing in new sectors and several areas of applications, the demands on the
management of project also continues to change (Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). These changes are
responsible for altering the way the management of project is observed as well as practiced.
After several re-researchs it has been observed that some of the failed cases have been resulted in
the developing countries like UK due to poor management and roles or goals which are not clear
enough. In the current years, it has been observed that the discipline of the management of
project has been altered in its particular application for accommodating the management
processes which are emerging and several philosophies which are related to the development of
the organization (Yildiz & Palak, 2019). The study of the management of project is purely
theoretical and is not considered to be helpful in the research politics specially in the funding of
it (Burke, 2013). Despite the theory is very much helpful in directing the person who researches
into several lines of production, the lack of the theory which is explicit may hamper the pursuit
of the whole research. It is common that if the project natures are then defined then definitely
certain consequences will follow as a logic matter.
One of the major drawbacks or rather weakness of the normative theory in the
management of project is that all the failures are treated according to the aberrations of the
theory. It does not produce the reason why any such deviation has occurred and how to correct it.
Before the management of project is considered as a profession, there is a need to recognize

academic discipline (Neringa & Audrius, 2018). There are many reasons of blocking the
recognition of the project management as an academic discipline which is established. First
reason is that there is no optional theory of the management of project and the other one is that it
is not so clear in the literature depicting the academic community (Fleming & Koppelman,
2016). Due to the several variations in the understanding of the management of project and the
application of it, it is very much important to know the type of project which dominate the part
of literature on the project management. It can be suggested that the project management is
hugely influenced by the research which originated the particular industry (Kim, 2015). For
understanding the field of the management of project fully, it is Primary to know how it has been
changed over time period (García-Peñalvo, 2016). The project management is always seen to
have been facing new challenges because of the tools, approaches and the methods to
management which are involved in the discipline which is applied in several areas in different
types of cultures (Schwalbe, 2015). The new ideas in managing the project which are introduced
can be linked with the news areas of applications and introduction of the practitioners which are
new. As a result, it has been seen that the number of practitioners are responsible for introducing
new perspectives and have also challenged the patterns of project management which pre-
existed. There has been an increment in new initiatives and developments which are pursued
through several projects and programmers. There is a growing adoption of different standards
and practices of the management of project which includes the launch of centers of excellence
within a number of departments of UK government (Johnson & Jackson Williams, 2015). The
Association for the management of project helps in defining project management as the
discipline of the management of projects successfully. As a discipline, management of project
