Discussion:
The report is an analytic overview of an article. The analysis of the article shows a
compilation of eight key approaches of strategic planning that puts forward an in depth
understanding of the models. Analysis of the article showed that the managers could apply most
of the approaches in public sector based on certain provisions. Portfolio Model is one such
model used by Boston Consulting Group that enabled it in focusing on the higher level of
corporate decisions based on relative priorities of business activities (Proctor, 2014). The analysis
also portrayed how the Portfolio Model allowed executives in treating the business units of the
larger corporations as represented stocks in the individual’s asset portfolio. The analysis further
showed that access of executives to the business units within a corporation based on two
dimensions, size of market share and market growth. It is also seen that business units possessing
higher value on both dimensions represented as ‘stars’ and calls for the need of priority attention
along with a profit reinvestment. Business units having smaller shares and slower growth are
represented as ‘dogs’ thereby demanding for a divestiture. However, the business unit with
higher market share and slower market growth represented as ‘ cash cows’ and it stressed on the
synergy and effective meshing of activities within organization for producing overall gains. The
analysis finally led to the discovery of the growth matrix model used today.
