1BARRIERS IN COMMUNICATION
I shall be narrating an experience when I had been a victim of miscommunication at my
school days. It so happened that I was taking my French lessons during the latter years of my
schooling, naturally, I was bound to make mistakes since French was a new language to me. I
was taking French classes as I had to move to Paris for a short period of time for pursuing a
course. I used to face a lot of problem in communicating with the French people in the foreign
country of France, hence I lagged behind in grasping the course material. Belonging to a
different cultural set up I found adjusting to the French system tad bit difficult. Some of the
gestures and ways of approaching people which is considered as normal and acceptable in the
United States of America, is considered as rude and uncouth in France. The experience was
embarrassing but it was enriching as I got to learn something new. I realized that before
migrating to a foreign country one must get acquainted to the culture and language over there.
That shall erase the chances of miscommunication to a great extent. In my case, as it can be seen
the language and cultural barriers in communication had played a crucial role.
My reply to peer number one shall be that it is necessary to develop a proper approach in
communicating with people. For that purpose one needs to be a good listener who pays a lot of
attention to what the other person is saying. Asking for clarifications, in case there is any
discrepancy in understanding what the other person wants to convey is very important.
Sometimes it might as well so happen that we tend to interpret the wrong meaning of what is
being conveyed and instead of talking to the person about it we tend to go to the extent of
breaking ties with the person. Not just at organizational level, miscommunication and
misunderstandings can cause personal relationships to get spoilt as well. Things like that can be
avoided if adequate steps are taken.

To the second peer, my response would be that technical glitches and conveyance of
decisions in isolation from the group is one of the reasons why miscommunications happen.
Group activities are supposed to be joint efforts and it must happen like an integrated system. On
overall knowledge of the plan must be intimated to each of the members. In such instances,
personal communications in form of meetings must be undertaken. The head, who takes
responsibilities of the event must maintain contact with the group members from time to time.
And the group members on the other hand must ensure that all relevant informations are
communicated to the head on a regular basis. Meetings should be conducted from time to time to
assess the progress and discuss about the future course of events. Relying solely on online or
electronic means is not wise as such communications happen in isolation. For effective
communication there has to be transparency.
