Justification of a self-made language test
Part 1: Introduction
Language testing is an integral part of judging one’s linguistic capabilities
about a particular language. Thus, it is highly important to be able to interpret a language test on
the basis of some criteria. The competency of interpreting a language test can be beneficial to set
a proper set of activities for a particular type of students. Moreover, it can be said that language
test is significant as it can give a review of what a student is capable of and what the student
needs to develop regarding using and applying a language. This study has dealt with justification
of a language test that is set for class 1 and 2 levels of students of Saudi Arabia. For that reason,
the study has described the parts of the test and the way the parts have been evaluated further in
the study. In addition, test has been justified and judged on the basis of some factors such as
practicality, authenticity, reliability and more. Moreover, some recommendations have been
given so that the given test can be improved for getting better results in future.
Part 2: Parts of the Test
One thing that needs to be mentioned first is that the given test is set to
judge competency in applicability of English language in students of class 1 and two. The
students, that have been tested, do not belong to an English speaking background and belong to
B1 level of CEFR. The test has been divided into four sections in order to test four categories of
language competency that are reading, writing, listening and speaking. Listening section has
been divided into further 2 parts while reading part has been divided into 3 consecutive parts. On
the other hand, reading section carries highest amount of score (20) while writing section carries
lowest score (10) among others. Each section and their parts have been described below:
Reading
This section has three parts among which the first part evaluates grammar
competency of the students. This part only evaluates one part of grammar that is knowledge of
tenses such as simple present, simple past and simple future. One example has been given at the
beginning of this part so that students get a firm idea about how to proceed with this particular
task. The second part of reading section has provided an essay and then a set of statements are
there that are to be marked either as true or as false. In the third part of this section, an
incomplete passage has been given that the students needs to complete using appropriate words
from a set of words. Each part carries 10 marks and ten questions. The difference between the
first part and the other two parts lies in the fact that the first part does not come with any given
section that the students need to read first in order to finish the task.
