Chapter 1: Introduction
1.0 Introduction
Staff motivation helps in enhancing organizational productivity in all business sectors.
Motivated staff members deliver their best performance and allow the concerned organization
to meet expectations of their consumers. This research is focusing on evaluating the
importance of staff motivation in healthcare sector to enhance productivity. This section of
this research paper is focused on providing clear background information regarding the role
of staff motivation in enhancing productivity of healthcare sector. This part is mentioning the
problem related to the topic that will be addressed through this research. Clear objectives,
hypothesis and research questions are included within this section of this study. Significance
of this study is mentioned at the end.
1.1 Background
Human resource is one of the most important parts of healthcare industry as this
industry is concerned about providing treatment and care to patients. Service of this industry
helps people to live a healthy life and fight with different kinds of diseases. It requires
dedicated staff members to provide optimal care to patients. Management and leaders of
healthcare organizations motivate staff to get their best effort for satisfying basic needs of
patients. As stated by Conrad, Ghosh & Isaacson (2015), leaders of healthcare settings
consider different theories to identify the best approach of motivating others. For example,
Maslow's Hierarchy of needs theory guides health care organizations to identify basic needs
of staff to motivate them.
On the other hand, Raziq & Maulabakhsh (2015) have mentioned that poor
motivation in health workers impact on their performance. Patients may suffer due to poor
performance of health workers and reputation of concerned organizations can be ruined.
However, a positive working environment, job satisfaction, increment, and two-way

communication between workers and leaders may motivate health workers to deliver their
best performance. This aspect has the potential to enhance overall performance of
organizations. Health care workers must get enough opportunity for self-development and
promotion. These kinds of practices can motivate them and organizational productivity can
be enhanced.
1.2 Research problem
Organizations face many problems due to poor staff motivation as it prevents them to
achieve business goals within minimum time. In terms of healthcare settings, poor employee
motivation may decline the productivity of the organization. As stated by Negarandeh,
Dehghan-Nayeri & Ghasemi (2015), it is important to understand the need of motivating
employees for their enhancing productivity. Motivating staff helps organization to encourage
them in providing the best service to consumers. In terms of healthcare sector, patients get
care and treatment according to their needs if motivated health workers are there. As stated
by Karatza, Zyga, Tziaferi & Prezerakos (2016), poorly motivated health staff may have a
negative impact on the entire healthcare system. Patient may not get promised facilities in a
healthcare setting that has failed to motivate their staff. As a result, health condition of
patients can deteriorate and critical patients can face life risk. Long working hours, extreme
workload, less number of leaves and other similar aspects ensure dissatisfaction in health
workers and it reflects on their performance. Findings of this research may help to describe
the relationship between organizational performance and staff motivation. Problems due to
poor motivation in healthcare staff can be mitigated by reviewing the final outcome of this
research.
1.3 Hypothesis or research questions
This research is focusing on determining research questions that can be addressed
throughout this research. Based on the background information on this topic, potential issues

of poor motivation in healthcare staff will be identified. Research questions are mentioned in
the following part of this section of this research paper.
1.4 General objective
General objective of this research is to critically evaluate the impact of staff
motivation on the productivity of organizations from the healthcare industry. All aspects
related to the selected research subject needs to be reviewed for understanding the importance
of motivating health workers. Through literature review and analysis of data, this objective
will be met in this research.
1.5 Research questions
