LO1 Evaluate different types of construction information in the context of diverse project
types.
TASK 1
Construction industry is a complex field that requires proper management and dissemination of
information to all the relevant stakeholders in order to have a successful project delivery. For
every project that is undertaken in the built industry, there are always a number of construction
documents that communicate differently that indicate the progress of the project in terms of its
design stages. The construction of the 5 storey office block in south of England near Heathrow
airport will apply different construction information to help describe the project.
Some of the information include the location of the site for construction, a set of design
drawings, the client’s contact details and needs such as the number of floors required for the
project, the size of the project, the specific spaces required, the type of materials to be used in
construction, the type of construction method to be used, the cost of the project and the schedule
defining the stages of construction along with their duration1. For this construction project, I will
produce the site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, door and window schedules, an
outline of bill of quantities, schedule of works. AutoCAD software will be used to produce these
design drawings. The building will provide a series of high specification of meeting and office
rooms with supporting services such as washrooms. The office block will be located in south of
England in an industrial park near Heathrow airport and will be accessed through Great South
West road. The office block will be constructed using a combination of concrete, steel and glass
facades. The design drawing information play different roles in construction.

 The site plan information shows the accessibility of the site, what infrastructure and
services are available on site and the orientation of the building on site by showing the
vehicular and pedestrian access to the building premises.
 The floor plans show the arrangement of spaces within the building envelope, how the
spaces relate with each other.
 The elevation information gives a clear interpretation of a final product of the building
facades by locating the position of the windows and other fenestrations.
 The sections are keen to provide details of the building construction materials and the
type of foundation used for construction.
 Detail drawings provide more specification of the building components such as how
building elements join together to make a complete structure.
 Door and window schedule gives information on the quantity and type of doors and
windows used in the building, their zone location in the building, orientation and their
sizes.
 Outline of bill of quantity gives the list of building materials used for construction
starting from the foundation to walling to roofing in order to determine their quantity and
pricing not forgetting the finishes of all the building elements.
 Schedule of works provides information on how long the project will run by locating
time of the day for every tasks to avoid cost overrun or project delays2.

The detailed floor plan dimensions mentioned in task one will help in setting out the building
foundation plan. Moreover providing the outline of bill of quantities will make the contractor
aware of the materials needed for this project.
LO3 Interpret different types of construction information in order to explain a
construction project
Task 3

The site plan provides the architect with the working area by manipulating the site while
maintaining the site context. The site helps the architect to identify the north position which is
important during building orientation. The road reserve which in most cases in the United
Kingdom is approximately 6 meters is also taken into consideration. The floor plans show the
walling with their dimensions, openings and sizes to specification. The elevations give the
building façade arrangement with wall colors painted to specification.
Mistakes are bound to be made when the construction team are working separately. This
may lead to errors when producing or interpreting the design. The most common mistake include
having incomplete designs which may lead to changing order when the work had already began
on site. Other errors may include omitting some important details such as the window and door
details, roof details which are intended to be completed later. The problem arises when the
drawings are not updated in time. Clashes occur when the drawing do not coordinate with each
other. For example, when the structural details do not coincide with the ductwork details. This
inconsistency may result in a hard clash where ventilation ducts run through the beams or where
insufficient space has been provided for installation works. This problems can be reviewed by
the construction team by updating the construction drawing all the time to ensure that they
coordinate.
The bill of quantity encounter a number of errors and discrepancies in terms of cost overrun or
underrun of the project because specific elements of task in a project are not always well defined
to detail, thus having a provisional sum that will cover such costs. However, the prime cost in a
project can also be faced with the challenges of inflation of material costs and high labor costs.

LO4 Assess ways in which construction professionals collaborate in the production of
construction information.
Task 4.
The construction professionals include the architect, civil engineer, quantity surveyor,
mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, project manager, contractor, and sub-contractor. The
architect’s role is to provide the design drawings. The electrical engineer work is to structure the
electrical system information. The electrical system information will give details to workers who
will be in charge of connect the building to different sources of power3. The mechanical engineer
work is to give the plumbing detail arrangement4. The structural engineer gives the structural
details of the beam and columns that will be able to sustain the building loads5. The engineers
and the architect coordinate to avert any problems that may arise in the process of implementing
the project. Integration of CAD and BIM process bridges the communication gap between the
stakeholders to help easy sharing of information and the project design drawings. This
collaboration makes the project management much easier and faster6.
