Managing oneself is one of the most important aspects in today’s business
environment. This report focuses on developing personal competency and managing self, to
become better managers or rather leaders for managing a diversified and multicultural team.
This report reflects on my learning from the sessions attended at the university. One of the
most known works of Peter Drucker in the field of Management, is his article on ‘Managing
oneself’. This article demonstrates the need to know and manage self by identifying the
strengths and weaknesses. One needs to understand his or her strengths to known where they
belong and what goals can they achieve by leveraging those skills and strengths. There have
been some great leaders in the history of mankind such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Martin
Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi; Da Vinci to name a few more. All these leaders have
achieved their goals by knowing their strengths and they have done exceptionally well for the
betterment of the society. Hence, to get to a leaders’ position, one needs to understand that
knowing your strengths can help to extent the limits of achievement (Drucker P. R., 2005).
Let us now refer to Peter Drucker’s work as published in HBR in the year 2005. It
says that “Knowing where one belongs can transform an ordinary person — hardworking
and competent but otherwise mediocre into an outstanding performer (Eliason,
2019).” It clearly states that if you want to perform well and transform from an ordinary
person to an extra ordinary person, one needs to understand the self competencies and should
lay focus on strengths and execute tasks using those strengths. A person who performs tasks
which do not suit his or her strengths or competencies would eventually lose motivation and
thereby make that person mediocre. One should understand strengths and master particular
knowledge areas to gain expertise rather than becoming jack of all things with no success or
interest. Knowing oneself can help to manage self efficiently. When you know your

strengths, it helps to outperform and minimize the weaknesses (obtaineudaimonia.com,
201).
As I associate and compare myself to Peter Drucker’s Theory of managing oneself,
my primary strengths are leadership skills and problem solving. I can lead a team efficiently
and derive better productivity by leveraging interpersonal skills like motivation and
flexibility. I am very good at problem identification in any scenario and thereby solving the
problem by evaluating the relevant alternatives. I have been working at a startup IT company
where I have led a team of associates. I helped the team in mitigating every issue and
problem that came in the way and my team completed the targets before time, delivering the
best quality product. I also have a good analytical ability which helps to workout alternatives
in adverse situations (Mayers, 2014).
As I possess the above mentioned skills, I need to have an in-depth study about the
how I can apply these skills in my career in the future. In order to become a successful leader
or manager, reading more about successful leaders and entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs, Warren
Buffet, Bill Gates along with books on developing interpersonal skills would be critical for
me. Along with this, I need to acquire critical team skills and business acumen for handling
different types of people in a diversified work environment. I also need to learn research
skills to enhance the success ratio in my future endeavors (Drucker P. F., 2015).
The factors of motivation for me are growth and people-centricity. I always like to
have a transparent system of 360 feedbacks where I can consider everybody’s opinion and
take informed decisions based on relevant alternatives. I like to evaluate myself at continuous
intervals to manage myself more efficiently. I respect each and every individual’s opinion.
My personality is more of a people centric person rather than task oriented person.
‘Managing oneself’ to transform into an extraordinary person also requires understanding of
